    Notes: Abstract The standard potential of the Zn−Hg (sat)/ZnCl2(M)/AgCl/Ag cell was determined at 25°C using several extrapolation procedures and the value 0.9843 V is proposed for E°. The emf of the Zn−Hg (sat)/ZnCl2(M), salt (M)/AgCl/Ag cell [salt=NaClO4, LiClO4, Mg(ClO4)2, Mg(NO3)2] have been measured at different concentrations of salt. From these data, the mean ionic activity coefficients of ZnCl2 are determined and their variations explained with the aid of Pitzer's treatment. It seems necessary to take into account structure in the ionic cospheres in order to explain the observed variations.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine kinetische Methode zur Bestimmung von Spuren Cer(IV) mit Hilfe von Natrium-4,8-diamino-1,5-dihydroxyanthrachinon-2,6-disulfonat wurde beschrieben. Dabei wird ein fluoreszierendes Oxydationsprodukt gebildet, das bei 525 nm angeregt mit einer maximalen Emission bei 585 nm fluoresziert. Die Reaktion ermöglicht die Bestimmung von 0,02–0,37 ppm Cer(IV). Die vorgeschlagene Methode wird nur durch wenige Störungen eingeschränkt.
    Notes: Summary A kinetic method for determination of traces of Ce(IV), based on the oxidation of sodium 4,8-diamino-1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone-2, 6-disulphonate is described. The reaction is monitored by means of the fluorescence of the oxidation product (λ ex=525nm,λ em=585 nm), and allows determination of 0.02–0.37 ppm Ce(IV). The proposed method has few interferences.

    Notes: Abstract A population growth is modelled by the Von Foerster PDE with accompanying Lotka-Volterra integral equation describing the birth rate; the age specific death and fertility rates are assumed to depend only on age and not time. A harvesting policy where a fraction of the population of age greater than a given age is harvested for a fraction of a given season. This introduces a time dependence, but this difficulty is circumvented by devising approximate timeindependent models whose birthrates bracket the true birthrate-the standard renewal equation theory applies to the approximate models so quantitative results can be obtained.

    Notes: Abstract Calli derived from leaves and radicles of B. ternifolia were grown on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium, and the effects of different nitrogen sources on the rate of callus growth and on the enzymes related to nitrogen assimilation were studied. Ammonium alone did not support callus growth unless a Krebs-cycle intermediate was added to the medium. The activities of glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2), glutamate synthase (EC 1.4.7.1), and glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.2) were measured in homogenates of callus grown on media supplied with different nitrogen sources. The results indicate that leaf and root calli have similar levels of these enzymes when grown on MS medium (Murashige and Skoog 1962. Physiol. Plant. 15, 473–497). However, when the calli were supplied with glutamine as the sole nitrogen source, the activity of glutamate synthase increased in leaf callus but was almost completely inhibited in root callus. The results indicate that calli originated from different B. ternifolia tissues do not have the same biochemical dedifferentiated state.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of incorporation of [2-14C] acetate into lipids and acyl-CoAs in relation to added CoA and ATP by isolated spinach chloroplasts have been examined. The effect of the concentration of these cofactors on lipid and acyl-CoA synthesis was also studied. In the absence of cofactors, or when only one was present, the incorporation was very low and went mainly into lipids. When both cofactors were present a strong stimulation of both activities occurred. After 25 min, acyl-CoAs were more strongly labeled than lipids and both activities continued linearly for at least 60 min.

    Notes: Summary This report describes a method using direct photon absorptiometry (DPA) for determination in vivo of the bone mineral content to bone width ratio (BMC/W) in the rat femur. A significant correlation was noted between measurements by DPA and whole femur dry weight and ash weight. Measurements were reproducible within repeated determinations of both the same and successive days. Soft tissue, rotation of the femur, or slight differences in the longitudinal positioning of the femur did not significantly affect usefulness of the measurements. A significant positive correlation was seen between body weight and the femur BMC/W, indicating that the method accurately reflected expected physiological changes in bone mineral. The method is suitable for the rapid, simple, accurate, and reproducible measurement of bone mineral in the anesthetized rat and is applicable to serial measurements.

Si osserva un bordo di assorbimento in corrispondenza della transizione del gap di banda diretta a circa 1 eV. Un ulteriore assorbimento è osservato a energie inferiori ((0.93÷0.95) eV) ed è attribuito a transizioni dirette alla presenza di fononi ottici a grande lunghezza d'onda.
    Abstract: Резюме При 100 К и 300 К исследуется спектр поглощения вблизи основного края поглощения монокристалла CuInSe2 n-типа, выращенного по методу Ъридгмана, Вблизи 1 эВ обнаружен край поглощения, соответствующий прямому переходу. Дополнительное поглощение наблюдается при меньших энергиях ((0.93÷0.95) эВ) и приписывается прямым переходом, связанным с длинноволновыми оптическими фононами.
    Notes: Summary The absorption spectrum near the fundamental absorption edge of an-type CuInSe2 single crystal grown by the Bridgman method has been studied at 100 and 300 K. An absorption edge corresponding to the direct-band-gap transition is observed at about 1 eV. An additional absorption is observed at lower energies ((0.93÷0.95) eV) and is attributed to direct transitions assisted by long-wave-length optical phonons.
