    Notes: The ability of a solid suspension in liquid medium to coat a vertical surface was analyzed. Results with model suspensions, consisting of polystyrene particles (37–147 μm) in volume concentration from 15–40%, show that coating thickness increases linearly with particle concentration in suspension, and then increases sharply at a critical concentration. The coating thickness of sucrose in corn oil shows behavior similar to that of the model system.

    Notes: Abstract. The chemical state of calcium in the soil and the effects, both direct and indirect, which this can have on the growth and distribution of plants are considered. Recent advances in knowledge refer mainy to interactions (between nitrogen source, aluminium and pH, for example) for which there is now experimental evidence and which themselves are influenced by calcium. The impact of physical variables is less marked than first thought although seasonal effects of waterlogging and drought can be critical. It is emphasized that the terms ‘calcicole’ and ‘calcifuge’ are generally acceptable in classifying plants according to the degree of calcareousness of the soils in which they occur but only if the wider implications are appreciated.

    Notes: Abstract. The effect upon potential maximum nitrogen uptake rate of root morphology and nitrogen availability in soil was investigated using a simple nutrient transport model. Parameter values appropriate to an ecological or an agricultural context were introduced from the literature. The model predicted that the maximum uptake rate of nitrate was morphology-dependent only at extremely low concentrations. For ammonium, this was so for all realistic concentrations, assuming a high potential maximum uptake rate. The important concentration range for ammonium was two orders of magnitude greater than that for nitrate. With a lower potential maximum uptake rate of ammonium, root morphology was important below 15/igNg′ soil, the concentration range in this case being a single order of magnitude greater than that for nitrate. The effects of root hairs were to decrease the threshold concentration for morphology-dependence, and to minimize root dry weight per unit volume of soil needed to maintain maximum nitrogen uptake rate. The effects of simultaneous mass flow of solution were negligible. The possible significance of these effects upon plant growth are discussed in relation to nitrogen availability.

    Notes: A simple bioassay is described in which the increase of in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence of unialgal continuous, cultures is related to the concentration of photosynthetic inhibitors by a hyperbolic function. Concentrations of the herbicide terbutryne detected by the bioassay in an aquarium microcosm were generally within 2 μg 1−1 of estimates by gas chromatography. A multispecies bioassay approach is proposed, which combines high sensitivity with a wide operating range of concentrations.

    Notes: Everyday, in real life, the past is irrevocable and the future predicted with a margin of uncertainty. In a theoretical model, time can be frozen but it is a common error to confuse a comparison of static positions with a movement between them. E. H. Carr claims that historians and natural scientist are alike in having given up the search for grand ‘laws’ and are now content to try to learn ‘how things happen’. To improve the status of economics it is necessary to get rid of logical contradictions, which involves eliminating the concept of static equilibrium; to guard against conception by ideological prejudice and to use the study of history, as it unfolds, to check up on the hypotheses that theory suggests.

    Notes: 14C-labelled atrazine or terbuthylazine was applied to the surface of soil columns 100 mm deep and the uptake by oat seedlings measured for up to 24 days after germination following two contrasting rainfall treatments. Attempts were made to predict measured uptake on the basis of mass flow theory given also measurements of transpiration rates, water, rooting and herbicide distribution profiles in the soil, and soil adsorption characteristics. Predictions over a tenfold range of uptake were close enough to suggest that the assumptions made to predict mass flow uptake were essentially correct. Discrepancies appeared to result principally from (i) shoot-zone uptake, and (ii) incorrect prediction of long-term herbicide adsorption in undisturbed soil. Greater attention to the effect of herbicide on transpiration rates and to the patterns of water uptake by roots should improve the accuracy of such predictions. The various factors that influence the mass flow uptake of chlorotriazines in the soil surface by seedlings are discussed as a basis for modelling herbicide uptake.

    Notes: In a family study of coeliac disease, HLA types in fifty-three patients and their relatives were examined. There are no differences in HLA frequencies between child and adult patients. Comparison with a random series of normal controls shows increases frequencies in patients of HLA-A1 and B8, while the family material shows that there is also an excess of haplotype I-8. The excess of homozygotes is thought not to be a factor in the aetiology. Intrafamilial analysis shows that only B8 is significantly associated with the disorder. It is argued that the HLA association does not indicate a ‘coeliac gene’ but that the B8 allele is a major gene in a polygenic system affecting the disorder.
