Notes: Summary Membrane inlet mass spectrometry has been used to measure the concentrations of dissolved CH4, H2, CO2, and O2 in samples of digestor sludge taken from laboratory scale anaerobic digestors. Addition of low levels of O2 or H2 to samples of sludge in a reaction vessel closed to the atmosphere caused the concentration of dissolved methane to rise by about 7%, concomitant rapid O2 uptake and H2 utilisation. The apparent Km for H2 was 8.6 μM; the Vmax was 124 μM·min−1. The addition of acetate or glucose to samples in an open reaction vessel resulted in increased methanogenesis but no detectable increase in the concentration of H2. The addition of formate resulted in increases of both H2 and CH4 production. Changes previously observed by other workers in gas composition and production on a time scale of hours upon the addition of substrates and inhibitors are no true estimate of the much more rapid changes in rates of production observed in the liquid phase (time scale of minutes).

Notes: [Auszug] Polymorphonuclear leukocytes infiltrate tissues in response to an inflammatory stimulus to remove invading microorganisms and cell debris. We present evidence that these scavenging cells have another, more sophisticated role in that they are involved in the control of fluid efflux through the blood ...

Notes: Abstract The grasshopper ERG displays a rapid recovery of responsivity following the onset of a background light. Although observed earlier in skate and frog, this phenomenon has not previously been seen in an invertebrate. Furthermore, a period of hyperresponsivity exists in early dark adaptation and resembles that found in skate and frog. Thus, recovery in the light and hyperresponsivity in the dark seem to be corollaries of each other. Finally, spectral sensitivity of the ERG is determined and two peaks are found: one at 510 nm and the other at 360 nm. The former appears to be a rhodopsin-mediated sensitivity but the latter does not and they are not clearly separated by chromatic adaptation.

Notes: Summary The superior cervical ganglia (SCG), celiac superior mesenteric ganglia (CMG), and splanchnic nerve of unoperated guinea pigs, as well as both proximal and distal stumps of a previously transected branch of the postganglionic plexus of the CMG, were immunostained for somatostatin (SS). In addition, the PAP technique was adapted for fine-structural visualization of SS. A greater proportion of cells were labeled for SS in the CMG than in the SCG. PAP molecules were present in one type of intraganglionic axons. Only two labeled axons were found in the splanchnic nerve. Neither proximal nor the distal stump of the transected CMG postganglionic nerve contained labeled axons. The present results support the hypothesis that the intraganglionic axons labeled for SS arise from SS-containing intraganglionic neurons.

Notes: Summary Fine structural localization of an ACTH-like substance was obtained in neurons of the rat arcuate nucleus using immuno-electron microscopy, whereas it could not be confirmed that ACTH-containing cell bodies are present in the supraoptic nucleus. The immunoreactive cells of the arcuate nucleus appeared to be more numerous than the unreactive neurons. Immunostaining was carried out before embedding in resin. Empty vesicles of irregular shape were found in dendrites of immunoreactive arcuate neurons, but their significance and nature remain enigmatic. The reaction product was distributed uniformly throughout the cytoplasm of the ACTH-positive cells, except that the mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi vesicles and cisternae were devoid of PAP molecules. This distribution differed from the localization reported in ACTH-secreting cells of the rat anterior pituitary, where the reaction product was found in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex as well as in secretory granules.

Notes: Chloro- and lithio-terminated diorganosilylene oligomers were coupled to form block copolymers that were soluble in common solvents and deposited coherent films from solution. Copolymer UV (ultraviolet) spectra showed a red shift in absorption maxima attributed to increased silicon chain length and phenyl-silicon spine interactions.
