    Notes: The release, dispersal, and ultrastructure of juveniles arising through multiple fission in the benthic foraminiferan Allogromia sp., strain NF (Lee & Pierce, 1963) has been examined by light and electron microscopy. An extensive reticulopodial network participates in the dispersal of fully differentiated young as they emerge from the fragmented parental test. During the earliest stages of release, offspring are of two classes—aroused and unaroused. Unaroused juveniles, which have not extended pseudopods, attach externally to the network and are transported bidirectionally along its surface. Aroused juveniles, which have extended pseudopods and are in protoplasmic continuity with the network, move quickly to the periphery of the network. Within 24 h, juveniles establish a communal “feeding reticulum” in which dispersed individuals are in protoplasmic continuity with neighbors via a common reticulopodial network. At the ultrastructural level, the cell body cytoplasm of unaroused juveniles contains numerous patches of a paracrystalline material, which disappears as their pseudopodia are extended to join the communal feeding reticulum. This paracrystalline material therefore appears to be a temporary reservoir of precursors required for pseudopod construction.

    Notes: The surface proteins and glycoproteins on red cells from normal and Babesia bovis-infected calf blood have been compared. Several radiolabeling probes were used to label specifically external membrane molecules which were then separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and identified by autoradiography or fluorography. No differences were observed among the Coomassie Blue-stained membrane proteins of erythrocytes from individual uninfected calves. Comparison of red cells from these animals also indicated no qualitative differences in the surface proteins with accessible tyrosyl residues labeled by lactoperoxidase-catalyzed radioiodnation, although some quantitative variation in the uptake of radioactivity into particular proteins was observed. the major radioiodinated bands on normal bovine erythrocytes had Mr of 165, 130, 90, and 45 kiloDaltons. However, labeling of surface glycoproteins by the periodate/[3H]NaBH4 and galactose oxidase (± neuraminidase)/[3H]NaBH4 methods showed significant differences in the surface proteins of red cells from individual uninfected calves. of 14 animals tested, 5 had major labeled glycoproteins of unique Mr. No changes were observed in radioiodinated surface proteins of total red cell samples from infected calves with 0.5-6% parasitemia. Radioiodination of concentrated infected red cells from the same samples (concentrated by selective hypotonic lysis of uninfected erythrocytes in KC1) resulted in the labeling of 3 new surface proteins, with Mr of 118, 115, and 60 kiloDaltons. the same new 125I-labeled bands were identified on infected cells from 3 avirulent strains of B. bovis used in vaccine production. Furthermore, in concentrated infected cells there was very poor radiolabeling of major bands strongly labeled on uninfected cells (Mr 165, 130, and 90 kiloDaltons), suggesting parasite-induced loss of these proteins. Although there were some differences in 3H-labeled surface glycoproteins of red cells from normal and. B. bovis -infected blood, they were restricted to minor labeled bands and were not seen consistently. the labeled surface glycoproteins of concentrated infected cells were very similar to those of the uninfected red blood cells from infected blood.

    Notes: : West Bitter Creek floodwater retarding structure site 3 in South Central Oklahoma was instrumented and records obtained and analyzed to obtain information concerning an impoundment water budget that is useful to landowners and designers of these impoundments. On-site loss of water from the impoundment was only 17 percent of the inflow during three years when the annual precipitation averaged 26 inches and the annual inflow averaged 1.4 inches. Runoff from an eroded area with no farm ponds was about 70 percent greater per unit area than from a portion of the watershed where 71 percent of the drainage area was controlled by farm ponds. A previous study indicated, however, that the ponds were reducing runoff only 13 percent. Loss of top soil increases runoff considerably. Only 24 percent of the total runoff into the impoundment was base flow. The flow rate into the impoundment was less than 0.05 cfs 70 percent of the time, and the inflow rate exceeded 10 cfs only 1 percent of the time. SCS runoff curve numbers varied between 57 and 96 for the impoundment watershed with an inverse relation between precipitation amount and curve number apprently caused by partial area runoff from impervious and semi-impervious areas. A comparison of measured event runoff versus event runoff computed by the SCS curve numbers gave an r2 of only 0.44. However, the total computed surface runoff for eight years of record was less than 1 percent below the measured runoff which indicated the curve number method was a good tool for predicting long term runoff for the watershed.

    Notes: : The purpose of this literature review is to identify and quantify the effects of channelization and to examine the feasibility and acceptability of alternative methods of flood control. In the past 150 years, over 200,000 miles of stream channels have been modified. Channelization can affect the environment by draining wetland, cutting off oxbows and meanders, clearing floodplain hardwoods, lowering ground water levels, reducing ground water recharge from stream flow, and increasing erosion sedimentation, channel maintenance, and downstream flooding. Channelization reduces the size, number, and species diversity of fish in streams. In a wet climate, the fishery requires less than 10 years to fully recover. However, in the drier climates, the fishery may never fully recover. In general, channel modifications have performed as designed for flood abatement. The Arthur D. Little Study (1973) reported that direct benefits estimated during channelization planning have been conservative and that damage reduction has been impressive. Diking seems to be a viable alternative to channel dredging. Dikes minimize destruction of wetland and eliminate the need for removing vegetation from the existing stream banks.
