Notes: The partial enthalpy of dissolved hydrogen in hydrocarbon liquids is derived from the fugacity correlation of Sebastian et al. and the results are presented in general equations. The partial enthalpy of the hydrocarbon solvent is found to be changed only insignificantly by the dissolved hydrogen from that of the pure liquid at the experimental conditions of up to 30 MPa in pressure.

Notes: Liquid-crystalline Heterocycloalkanes. I. Synthesis and Properties of Substituted 1,3-DioxanesThe synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted 1,3-dioxanes is described, their melting and clearing points and their physical properties (dielectric anisotropy, viscosity, transition enthalpies, optical birefringence) are investigated. The cyano substituted 1,3-dioxans 5 and 7 are valuable materials for application in displays.

Notes: Derivatives of Halogenated Aldehydes. XVII. Reactions of N-(1,2,2,2-Tetrachloroethyl)trichloroacetaldimine with Alcohols and ThioalcoholsReactions of N-(1,2,2,2-tetrachloroethyl)trichloroacetaldimine 1 with methanol lead to 1,2,2,2-tetrachloroethyl-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-methoxyethyl)amine 2a, N-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-methoxyethyl)trichloroacetaldimine 3a and bis-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-methoxyethyl)amine 5. After the reaction of the aldimine 1 with ethanol or propanol only the N-(1-alkoxy-2,2,2,-trichloroethyl)trichloroacetaldimines 3b, c are isolated; with thioalcohols only the N-(1-alkylthio-2,2,2-trichloroethyl)-trichloroacetaldimines 4a-c are obtained. The aldimines 3a-c and 4b, c are decomposed on treatment with hydrochloric acid and an excess of an alcohol or thioalcohol to yield the amine hydrochlorides 6a-c, 7b, c, which are transformed into the amines 8a-c and 9b, c. From these amines the derivatives 10-15 are prepared.

Notes: On the Reduction of 1,3-Thiazinium Salts; Synthesis of 6,6′-Bi-1,3-Thiazinyls and 6,6′-Bi-1,3-Thiazinylidenes1,3-Thiazinium perchlorates 1 are linked together in a reaction with zinc powder or at a cathode forming 6,6′-bi-1,3-thiazinyls 3. This reaction proceeds via radical intermediates 2. Evidence of the existence of the very short-lived radicals is given by means of ring-disk-voltammogrammes as well as by electrochemical luminescence excitation. The 6,6′-bi-1,3-thiazinyls 3 undergo the reverse fission at a platinum anode resulting in thiazinium salts 1, whereas the dehydrogenation by chloranile yields the violet 6,6′-bi-1,3-thiazinylidenes 6.

Notes: The degradation rates of free radical polymerized and syn-diotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) under electron radiation were explored at temperatures ranging from 225 to 325°C and at electron dose rates from 10,000 rads/min to 100,000 rads/min. Scission of bonds between main-chain atoms resulted in pairs of radical chain ends, of which some disportionated, thereby reducing polymer molecular weight without loss of volatile, while others proceeded to depropagate via the usual radical transfer, causing complete volatilization of the chain without significant change of molecular weight of the residual polymer. Electron irradiation at a dose rate of 100,000 rads/min produced a significant enhancement in the reaction, rate, and reduced the overall activation energy from 140 KJ/g-mole observed for thermally induced depropagation to a value of 75 KJ/g-mole observed during simultaneous irradiation and/thermal depropagation.

Notes: A number of recent screw designs is analyzed for melting performance, using a simple analytical approach based on Tadmor's original work. The melting length for a screw with constant depth channel is used as reference. An ideal compression screw will have a melting length of one-half the melting length of the reference screw. The Maillefer melt separation principle is discussed. The Maillefer screw melts in 2/3 of the length of the reference screw. Screws by Barr, by Dray and Lawrence and by Kim are shown to approach the ideal compression screw. A new design screw, using ideal compression and multiple channels and having a very large screw pitch, is shown to be a considerably more efficient melting device than any of the other, screws discussed.

Notes: In recent years the spinning speeds of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fiber have increased to the point that significant structural development is being observed in the spun yarn. At even higher speeds significant crystallization has been obtained. Data characterizing these yarns will be presented and discussed showing the development of crystals and that the onset of this phenomena is related to the stress at the “freeze point.” The “freeze point” rises from around Tg at low speeds to the order of 200°C at high speeds. The spinline itself has been characterized by velocity and orientation profiles which show the crystallization process is extremely rapid, occurring over a few centimenters of the spinline.

Notes: Representative random, alternating block copolymers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and bisphenol-A-polycarbonate (BPAPC) were studied by thermomechanical and dynamic mechanical techniques. Data on glass transition temperatures (Tg), heat-deflection temperatures (Td), Vicat softening temperatures (Ts), coefficients of linear expansion (α), stress-strain, and stress relaxation for four PDMS-BPAPC block co-polymers are presented. The effect of casting films from mixed n-hexane-methylene chloride solution on the thermomechanical and dynamic mechanical properties was also studied.
