Notes: Computation of the grain-size distribution of the suspended load above a sand bed must take into consideration: (1) sorting processes from the bed to the bed layer and (2) sorting between the bed layer and suspension. Grain-size distributions of the bed layers above sand beds of three different types have been computed in this work, both by the Einstein and the Gessler methods. Using these as references, suspended load distributions have been obtained in each case by the Rouse suspension equation. A new formula has also been developed in partial modification of Hunt's method for direct computation of bed load and suspended load from a bed's grain-size distribution and flow parameters.Comparison of the computed data with actual observations in laboratory flumes show that no one method is particularly superior to the others, but the present method is advantageous because it affords direct computation of the suspended load from a bed's grain-size distribution, without going through an intermediate stage (bed load). The possible sources of error in each of the methods have been discussed.

Notes: Summary Koop [1967] proved that interpenetrating samples of unequal sizes are more efficient than those with equal sizes for estimating a finite population total. After observing that there is a serious lacuna present in his proof, a correct proof has been suggested. The optimum choice of individual sample sizes has also been discussed for a given (i) total sample size, (ii) cost and (iii) precision, with an assumed cost structure. Finally, the resulting estimators have been compared with those based on a single sample.

Notes: Summary Almost unbiased ratio and product type estimators have been obtained with the help of the Jack-Knifing technique for simple random sampling in two phases. The mean square errors of the resulting estimators have been compared with those of the corresponding usual (biased) estimators and it has been found that they are approximately same. This study generalizes similar single sampling results ofDurbin [1959],Shukla [1976] and others.

Notes: Abstract When grains of a sediment sample are separated by sieving into a number of size classes, the weight of the grains belonging to a particular size-class is called the weight frequency of that class. That the weight frequencies cannot be used as simple frequencies for the calculation of the mean and standard deviation of size of grains is well known. A method is developed in this paper for estimating these two as well as a third parameter, named shape parameter, by minimizing a quadratic form that arises naturally as an analogue of the χ 2 statistic. Two fully worked out numerical examples, with simulated data, are presented to illustrate the method. A computer program in FORTRAN language is also appended. Comparative study shows that the quicker conventional method used by geologists may produce reasonably good estimates of standard deviation when the sample size is large, but the estimates of mean may show large deviations.

Notes: Abstract This essay aims at constructing an abstract mathematical system which, when interpreted, serves to portray group-choices among alternatives that need not be quantifiable. The system in question is a complete distributive lattice, on which a class of non-negative real-valued homomorphisms is defined. Reinforced with appropriate axioms, this class becomes a convex distributive lattice. If this lattice is equipped with a suitable measure, and if the mentioned class of homomorphisms is equipped with a metric, then the class and its convex sets are seen to possess certain characteristic properties. The main result (Theorem 6) follows from a combination of these results and a famous result due to Choquet. The mathematical scheme is then interpreted in the subject-language of ‘choice among alternatives’. It is shown, by means of an example, that the system furnishes all the ingredients for describing multi-group choices. Whether or not the same ingredients are also adequate for a behavioural theory of multi-group choices is an issue that will not be gone into. However, the example effectively illustrates how a process of bargaining can be described with the aid of the mathematical scheme. In the second example, a class of bargaining situations is modelled in the symbolism of linear programming with several objective functions combined with unknown ‘weights’; the ‘cost’ vectors in such formulations are identified with homomorphisms, and the main theorem of this essay is applied.

Notes: The interaction of tylophorinidine (TPD) with lysozyme - a model protein - with biological activity, was investigated by determining its fluorescence and by assessing its activity under various conditions. The results indicated that TPD associated with lysozyme at pH 9.2 efficiently with an association constant Ka of 3.3 X 104 M-1 at 26°C. Ka increased with the increasing temperature in the range 26 to 55°C; the calculated enthalpy change ΔH was found to be 2.3 kcal/mol. Under the same conditions as above TPD also associated with the free amino acid tryptophan with a Ka of 1.7 X 104 M-1 indicating half the efficiency of its association with protein lysozyme. TPD associated lysozyme was less active than the uncomplexed enzyme in the above temperature range although beyond 45°C the inhibition was more significant. The results imply that TPD binds lysozyme outside the cleft region in the temperature range studied here. However, with increasing temperature the cleft region is gradually widened and/or the whole molecule is expanded such that the accommodation of whole or part of the TPD molecule is facilitated leading to the blockage of lytic activity.
