    Notes: Pure pencillin N α-sulfoxide (1) and penicillin N β-sulfoxide (2) were obtained by HPLC and tested as substrates for deacetoxycephalosporin C synthetase (DXCS). Neither one of the sulfoxides was utilized under conditions of conversion of penicillin N (8) to deacetoxycephalosporin C (9). The cephalosporin C α and β-sulfoxides (3 and 4, resp.) were also prepared. Relative stabilities of the sulfoxides 3 and 4 are discussed by interpretation of the 13C-NMR spectra.

    Notes: Spinning speed is one of the most important process parameters for change in properties of yarn and efficiency of polyester production. In this paper the effect of spinning speed (3000-6200 ypm) on dynamic mechanical properties is presented, and shows a good qualitative picture on the influence of structure change on the dynamic modulus and the height and position of glass transition peak on POY (partially oriented polyester) and PTY (draw-textured polyester) yarns. The dynamic moduli of POY yarns in a temperature range of 25-160°C are increased with increasing spinning speed. Large glass transition peaks (α peak) are observed for POY yarn spun at 3000 and 2800 ypm at about 98°C. This indicates that the yarns are low oriented with low crystallinity (5-6%). But the Tg of POY spun at 5600 or 6200 ypm is about 125°C and shows about 35% crystallinity with high amorphous orientation. An approximately linear relation was found between the height of the loss peak (tan δ) and the degree of amorphous orientation (fa) by using these analyses.

    Notes: The Morey-Tamblyn turbidity method has been used to investigate the molecular weight distribution in a series of polymethyl methacrylates including commercial and experimental injection moulding powders. Evidence has been obtained that the increase in rate of polymerization occuring in the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (Norrish-Smith effect) causes widening of the distribution in high conversion polymers, but the separation into multiple peaks reported by other authors has not been observed. From an examination of specially prepared polymers, e.g., at small degrees of conversion, it is concluded that chain combination is a more likely termination process than disproportionation.

    Description: Gravitational stability of gaseous protostellar disks is relevant to theories of planetary formation. Stable gas disks favor formation of planetesimals by the accumulation of solid material; unstable disks allow the possibility of direct condensation of gaseous protoplanets. This paper presents the results of numerical experiments designed to test the stability of thin disks against large-scale, self-gravitational disruption. It is found that a disk as massive as 1 solar mass, surrounding a 1 solar mass protostar, can be stable against long-wavelength gravitational disruption if its temperature is about 300 K or greater. Stability of a cooler disk requires that it be less massive, but even at 100 K a stable disk can have an appreciable fraction (about 1/3) of a solar mass.

    Description: In the present simulations of a disturber in a complete stellar disk without the restrictive assumption, the disturber parameters of the NGC 206 cloud in M 31 were assumed as a realistic example. The resulting spur around the disturber was comparable in shape, size, and strength to Julian and Toomre's (1966) results. In addition, a complicated evolving pattern of strong density peaks appeared well inside and outside the disturber's orbit. Simulation with a ten-times-more-massive disturber showed a more clearly defined version of the same initial pattern, two spiral arms of density peaks rotating with the disturber in the stronger arm. The orbital radii of the density peaks correspond to those of epicyclic resonances with the orbiting disturber potential.

    Description: Consistent and robust growth rates for disturbances which lead to galaxy clustering are obtainable with a precision of 1-2 percent, in numerical experiments that encompass such conditions as expansion, nonexpansion, and parameter variations. The experiments have given attention to the dominant physical processes of gravitational clustering in an expanding universe of conventional matter, and are based on n-body integrations for 100,000 particles responding self-consistently to forces of self-gravitation with periodic boundary conditions. Observed structures of the scale of galaxy clusters and superclusters are most easily described in terms of matter swept away from growing empty regions. The result of this process has a cellular appearance which resembles clustering of the scale of large voids and superclusters.

    Description: Numerical experimens are presented which were intended to verify the independence of bar formation in rotating galaxy models from special initial conditions. Three-dimensional n-body programs were run starting from aspherical initial conditions characterized by particle rotational and peculiar velocities and offsets from sphericity for a set of 100,000 particles. All the initial configurations examined are observed to collapse to a thin form, overshoot, collapse again and again overshoot, with diameters and central densities similar to those observed under spheric initial conditions. Every aspheric collapse is also found to result in bar formation within two rotation periods, which is even sooner than in initially spherical conditions. In the intermediate stages of collapse, transient sheet patterns are found to be destroyed at asymmetries of 2-3%, while transient rings survived asymmetries of 6-7% but not 15-18%. It is noted that the results may be applicable to galaxy formation in the early universe, and possible mechanisms for the arresting of protogalactic collapse are indicated.

    Description: The paper considers the hypothesis that elliptical galaxies are oblate axisymmetric objects flattened by rotation. It was found that (1) rotation does not flatten axisymmetric elliptical galaxies appreciably and elliptical galaxy models can rotate rapidly and yet show little flattening, (2) several systems remained axisymmetric when the quantity t used as a measure of rotation was greater than 0.14, and (3) models with similar shapes can have quite different internal dynamics.
