Notes: Abstract. Lamarck and Darwin agreed on the inconstancy of species and on the exclusive gradualism of evolution (nature does not jump). Darwinism, revived as neo-Darwinism, was almost generally accepted from about 1930 till 1960. In the sixties the evolutionary importance of selection has been called in question by the neutralists. The traditional conception of the gene is disarranged by recent molecular-biological findings. Owing to the increasing confusion about the concept of genotype, this concept is reconsidered. The idea of the genotype as a cluster of genes is replaced by a cybernetical interpretation of the genotype. As nature does jump, exclusive gradualism is dismissed. Saltatory evolution is a natural phenomenon, provoked by a sudden collapse of the thresholds which resist against evolution. The fossil record and the taxonomic system call for a macromutational interpretation. As Lamarck and Darwin overlooked the resistance of evolutionary thresholds, an alternative evolution model is needed, the first to be constructed on a palaeontological and taxonomic basis.

Notes: Abstract Copper(II) compounds catalyze the reaction of 1,1-diphenylethylene with diazoacetic acid ethylester. The main product is 2,2-diphenylcyclopropane carboxylic acid ethylester. The formation of the carbene dimerization products fumaric and maleic acid diethylester can be suppressed by the continuous addition of diazoacetic acid ester to 1,1-diphenylethylene. 37 optically active ligands, partly new, were combined with copper(II)-acetate to givein-situ-catalysts. In five cases isolated copper complexes were used as catalysts. The best optical inductions in the formation of 2,2-diphenylcyclopro-pane carboxylic acid ethylester with up to 65.6% ee were achieved withSchiff base ligands, which derive from salicylaldehyde and amino alcohols, obtained from amino acid esters and phenylGrignard.

Notes: Summary A Note on the Goodman Jack Reconnaissance experiments, performed to evaluate the practical utility of the hard-rock variety of the Goodman Jack, reveal that the Hustrulid-T* correction adequately reconciles the discrepancy between the measured and true deformation modulus of the rock mass in the range of 30 to 50 gigapascals.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A string fixed at both ends oscillates in a plane in which there is a fixed straight line segment, parallel to the line joining the ends of the string. The string can rebound from the solid segment. The string is initially at rest, with prescribed shape. We prove that depending on the prescribed intial form of the string the motion is either periodic or aperiodic, and in the former case we compute the period.

Notes: Summary The expression of the lacZ gene of E. coli in S. cerevisiae has been studied. The enzymatic activity coded by the lacZ gene in E. coli, β-galactosidase, is detectable in yeast cells harboring a chimeric plasmid carrying the gene. On the basis of size and immunological criteria, no difference was detected between the Coli-in-yeast β-galactosidase and the E. coli enzyme.

Notes: Abstract [RhCl(C8H14)2]2 together with the optically active amidines C6H5C(=NR)NHCH(CH3) (C6H5) I–V or their Li derivatives after activation with molecular hydrogen gives catalysts which at room temperature and 1.1 bar H2-pressure hydrogenate the prochiral substrates (Z)-α[N-acetylamino]-cinnamic acid, itaconic acid, α-methylcinnamic acid, α-methylcinnamic aldehyde, and α-methylcinnamic alcohol as well as cyclohexene, benzene and toluene. Good hydrogenation activity of the new catalysts is in contrast to low optical induction which only in the hydrogenation of α-methylcinnamic alcohol with 1.5 to 2% leads to values different from zero.
