    Notes: Hyphae of light-grown V. agaricinum (Link) Corda contain many lipid bodies. The hypae were disrupted and the membranes immediately pelleted by a 48 000 g spin for 30 min. The major part (90%) of the carotenoids was found in a lipid layer on top of the supernatant. Carotenoids extracted from the lipid layer in diethyl ether had an absorption maximum at 488 nm. On the basis of spectra in different organic solvents the main component was tentatively. Thin layer chromatography of extracted and saponified carotenoids revealed the presence of one major and one minor component.The 48 000 g pellet contained 80% of the NAD+-dependent malate dehydrogenase (marker for mitrochondria), 25% of the antimycin-resistant NADH-cytochrome c reductase (marker for mitochodria and endoplasmic reticulum) and 10% of the proteins and the carotenoids. The latter were different from the carotenoids in the lipid layer in that the absorption maximum was at 471 nm in diethyl ether.Further fractionation of the 48 000 g pellet showed the presence of carotenoids in both mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) all with an absorption maximum at 471 nm. On a thin layer plate these carotenoids migrated in one band coinciding with the minor band of the lipid layer. On a continous Percoll gradient two main areas of mitochodrial activity (1.068 and 1.063 g ml−1) were clearly separated from the ER (1.059 g ml−1). The carotenoid content was about 0.6 and 0.7–1.0 μg (mg protein)−1 for mitochondria and ER, respectively, equivalent to 1–2 carotenoid molecules per 1000 lipid molecules. The possible role of these membrane-bound carotenoid molecules is discussed.

    Notes: Verticillium agaricinum (Link) Corda, grown in a yeast extract-sucrose medium, conidiated abundantly in darkness after irradiation with near ultraviolet (290–400 nm) for 15 min or blue light (400–550 nm) for 60 min. Few conidia were formed in total darkness. Exposure to 30 min of near ultraviolet light suppressed conidiation. Conidiation was also suppressed by phosphate in excess of 10−4M irrespective of light condition. After irradiation with near ultraviolet light for more than 30 min, there was a cessation of growth and a change in colony color from yellow to reddish. The color does not appear to be due to a carotenoid because the colonies turned from red to yellow when covered with acid. At pH lower than 6.0 the pigment has an absorption maximum around 390 nm, whereas at higher pH it is around 540 nm. Thus, it appears that irradiation of V. agaricinum with near ultraviolet may cause an increase in pH, which in turn produces the change of colony color from yellow to reddish.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Des Myzus persicae de la région de Beijing, conservés sur tabac en serre, ont été élevés sur un régime artificiel voisin de celui de Dadd & Mittler (1966); sinigrine, tomatine, nicotine, gossypol, phlorizine, inuline et acide malique ont été ajoutés séparément aux concentrations de 0,1 et 0,2%. En comparant les préférences, aucun des régimes enrichis en substances secondaires n'était supérieur au régime de base. La prise alimentaire pendant le développement larvaire a été quantifiée en utilisant de la glycine C14 dans le régime. Les èlevages étaient conduits à 25±1 °C et H. R. 85% et une photopériode J/N: 16/8. Le prélèvement total de régime de base pendant le développement larvaire était environ 1,16 μl/puceron. L'addition de substances secondaires végétales au régime induit de façon inégale le prélèvement, dans l'ordre suivant: nicotine〉phlorizine〉gossypol〉tomatine〉acide malique〉inuline〉sinigrine. Les larves consommant sur des régimes contenant de la sinigrine ou de la tomatine à partir du second jour après la naissance semblent prèsenter une plus grande tolèrance pour la sinigrine que la tomatine, avec une mortalité de 9,6% en 7 jours d'élevage pour la première et 89,4% pour la seconde. Ainsi ces pucerons diffèrent de ceux de Hollande, puisque ces derniers tolèrent plus la tomatine (Schoonhoven & Derksen-Koppers, 1976). L'addition d'inuline, d'acide malique ou de sinigrine ne provoque pas de différence significative dans le taux de développement larvaire ou la longévité des adultes. Des régimes contenant ces substances pourraient permettre le développement et la reproduction de pucerons pendant au moins 3 générations.
    Notes: Abstract Green peach aphids Myzus persicae from the Beijing region, maintained on greenhouse tobacco plants, were reared on modified artificial diet; sinigrin, tomatine, nicotine, gossypol, phlorizin, inulin and malic acid were added separately in concentrations of 0.1% or 0.2%. In preference tests none of the diets enriched by secondary substances was more acceptable than the basal diet. Diet uptake during larval development was determined quantitatively by using C14 glycine in the diets. For the basal diet the total uptake during larval development was about 1.16 μl/aphid. The addition of secondary plant substances to the diet caused reductions of uptake to different degrees in the order: nicotine〉phlorizin〉gossypol〉tomatine〉malic acid〉inulin〉sinigrin. The larvae feeding on diets containing sinigrin or tomatine from the second day after birth seemed to have a much higher tolerance for sinigrin than tomatine, with a mortality of 9.6% within 7 days of rearing for the former and 89.4% for the latter. Hence this aphid differs from that occurring in the Netherlands in that the latter has a higher tolerance towards tomatine. The addition of inulin, malic acid or sinigrin did not cause a significant difference in the rate of larval development or in adult longevity. Diets containing these substances could support the aphid's development and reproduction for at least three generations.

    Notes: Abstract The space chages formed in the process of photorefraction in LiNbO3 crystals is visualised by charged powder techniques. The results confirmed the existence of space charge carriers at the periphery of the illuminated region with negative charge carriers in the +z periphery and positive in the −z. The observed patterns on the surface of LiNbO3-Fe (0.05%) crystal illuminated with higher light intensities presented discharge-like features, namely traces of discharge in the medium at the crystal surface. The correlation between the kinetics curves of birefringence changeΔn(t) and the revealed surface patterns indicated that electric breakdown of the medium at the surfaces was responsible for the periodic reduction ofΔn(t).

    Notes: Abstract Dynamic analysis of the viscoelastic simple supported beam has been made in accordance with the relationship between stress and strain expressed by the simplest Voigt mechanical model, from which several analytic expressions have been obtained. It is shown that the reduction of the ratio of natural frequencies progresses with the increase of the exciting frequency for high modes (Tab.1). In the final part of this paper, the forced vibration of simple supported beam subjected to a random and harmonic excitation has also been dealt with, and the representations of the beam deflection have been derived.

    Notes: Abstract Larval (5th-final instar) drift patterns of five species of black flies (Prosimulium mixtum, Stegopterna mutata, Simulium tuberosum FG, S. vittatum IIIL-1, and S. vittatum IS-7) were analyzed. The diel drift patterns were not species-specific, but consistently exhibited a marked increase after sunset, preceded by a period of minimal drift. The drift minimum generally occurred during or shortly after the period of maximum water temperature. Larvae showed significantly more nocturnal than diurnal drift. Pupal drift was attributed to accidental detachment from the substrate. Adult drift was over 90% diurnal and usually composed primarily of teneral individuals. Upstream larval movements of the S. vittatum and S. tuberosum complexes were each less than 6.5% of the total upstream and downstream larval movements. The proportion of parasitized larvae of the S. vittatum and S. tuberosum complexes was generally higher in the benthos than in the drift. Based in part on data included in a thesis submitted by the senior author to The Pennsylvania State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph. D. degree.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the problem of an infinite plane with a circular hole welded by a nearly circular plate with a crack of different material is considered. The problem is transformed into solving a certain boundary value problem of analytic functions and then reduced to solving a singular integral equation along the crack.     Notes: Abstract For the dynamical equation system (a three-dimensional autonomous system) of hemoglobin given in [1], we make the following qualitative investigations: (1) point out that all meaningful solutions should be in a tetrahedroid, and that its four surfaces are without contact; (2) find all singular points, and prove that only two of them are respectively situated on a pair of them are respectively situated on a pair of separate edges, and that other singular points are outside the tetrahedroid and meaningless; (3) prove that, among seven physical parameters of this system, only the sign of a parameter determines the properties of these two singular points; (4) clear up the relation between this system and MWC model[3], The investigation shows that this system reflects the dynamical properties of hemoglobin satisfactorily.

    Notes: In this study it is demonstrated that the combined chemical and mechanical influences of the implant situation cause property changes of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW PE) hip joint cups. Nearly 30 out of 48 loosened cups, retrieved 3 weeks to 11 years after implantation, were investigated. Density measurements show a density increase with implantation time and a dependence of these changes from implant position and loading conditions. The rate of extractable constituents also increases with course of time. An increased in vivo conditioned oxidation of the UHMW PE can be demonstrated by infrared (IR) spectrometry. The density increase can be explained by post-crystallization, which is the result of oxidative chain scission. This leads to a reduction of the average molecular weight of the PE and to an increased extractability of constituents. Since these changes have been recognized as the reasons for aging and failing of UHMW PE, the methods of material characterization used in this study for retrieved implants will help to develop suitable in vitro testing and simulating methods. They are the prerequisite for the necessary improvements of the material properties of UHMW PE.
