Notes: Abstract An INDO-CI method in π-approximation extended for transition metal complexes with organic ligands is presented. The σ-polarization in the complex is estimated using a two-dimensional EHT calculation and considered in the π-calculation by means of the diagonal Fock matrix elements. The method is tested for four trisdiimine iron(II) complexes. In agreement with the experimental absorption spectra the calculations show that diimine complexes with non-heterocyclicly bound nitrogen atoms exhibit a large red-shift of the characteristic charge-transfer transition increasing the number of aromatic rings. Contrarily, for diimine complexes with heterocyclicly bound nitrogen atoms no shift of the charge-transfer transition was obtained.

Notes: Abstract A new plant growth retardant, the norbornenodiazetine derivative 5-(4-chlorophenyl) - 3,4,5,9,10 - pentaaza - tetracyclo - 5,4,1,02.6,08.11- dodeca - 3,9 - diene (NDA) was tested for its effects on growth ofZea mays suspension cultures. It was shown that NDA could inhibit cell division almost completely at a concentration of 5× 10−5 M, while 80% of cells could be considered viable. Tracer experiments revealed that NDA inhibited thymidine, uridine, and leucine uptake into cells after 30 min of application. In contrast, amino acid incorporation into proteins was reduced only after one day of treatment and incorporation of precursors into DNA and RNA still later. Since NDA stimulated DNase, RNase, and protease activity in the cells simultaneously, an enhancement of DNA and RNA in cells possibly was prevented. That NDA affected protein synthesis indirectly seemed to be proved by the late point in time of its action on leucine incorporation and by only slight effects on cell free translation. An explanation of these findings could be an alteration in or inhibition of sterol biosynthesis caused by NDA, because it is known that sterols play an important role in controlling permeability of plant membranes as well as in maintaining normal protein synthesis. Thus we tested NDA for its effects on sterol production in maize cells and demonstrated that the composition of the sterol fraction, mainly stigmasterol and β-sitosterol, was clearly changed qualitatively as well as quantitatively.

Notes: Abstract New 0+-levels have been identified at 1,436 keV and 1,859 keV in98Zr through experiments at the fission product separators OSTIS and JOSEF. Half-lives of these levels of 0.69 ns and 0.24 ns, respectively, have been determined from measurements of delayedβ,γ coincidences.E0 transitions depopulating these 0+-levels have been observed. The results are in agreement with the assumption of shape coexistence in98Zr.

Notes: Abstract Beta-delayed neutron emission from the precursors93–100Rb to excited states in the residual nuclei92–99Sr has been measured by means ofγ-ray and neutron spectroscopy. In general, considerable neutron feeding of excited final states is observed. The experimental branching ratios (P n i ) are compared to predictions from statistical model calculations. It is demonstrated that the main parameter affecting theP n i -values is the shape of theβ-strength function (S β). For several Rb isotopes hindrance, respectively enhancement of neutron branches to specific final states is observed giving evidence for the persistence of intermediate structure of the neutron-emitting states. By the example of98Rb it is shown that a few integralβ-delayed neutron properties may be sufficient to derive first estimates on the real shape ofS β above the neutron binding energy. This result is of importance for exotic nuclei where detailed spectroscopic investigations are precluded.

    Notes: Abstract An intrinsic Germanium detector of 10 mm depth and 300 mm2 sensitive area has been used to determineβ-endpoint energies for Rb, Sr and Y fission products. It was calibrated with monoenergetic electrons supplied by a magnetic conversion electron spectrometer for the energy range from 1.6 to 8 MeV. The energy calibration of the detector is linear with deviations less than 2 · 10−4, and the detector was recalibrated daily using precisely known gamma rays of90Rb. At the on-line fission product separator OSTIS at the ILL, Grenoble the endpoints ofβ-singles-spectra have been determined andQ-values deduced if possible also from beta-gamma coincidence measurements. The obtainedQ-values are:88Rb:(5 318±4) keV,89Rb: (4 510 ± 8) keV,90Rb: (6 578 ± 15) keV,91Rb: (5 857 ± 8) keV,91Sr: (2 704.5 ±3) keV,92Rb: (8 111 + 15) keV,93Rb:(7 485 ± 15) keV,94Rb: (10 304 ± 30) keV,94Sr: (3 512 ± 5) keV,94Y: (4 920 ±5)keV,95Rb: (8 947 ±100) keV,95Y: (4 445±5) keV,96Rb: (11 303±250) keV,96Sr: (5 413±20) keV,96Y: (7 120 ±50) keV,97Rb: (10 020 ±50) keV.

Notes: Abstract An intrinsic germanium detector was used to measure the beta endpoint energies of heavy fission products supplied by the on line mass separator OSTIS installed at the high flux reactor of the Institut Max von Laue-Paul Langevin, Grenoble. The endpoints of singles-spectra have been determined and, by means of beta-gamma coincidence measurements also most of theQ β-values of the following neutron-rich nuclides could be deduced with high accuracy:138Cs: (5388±25)keV,139Cs: (4213±5)keV,139Ba: (2336±25)keV,140Cs: (6220±15)keV,141Cs: (5252+15/-60)keV,141Ba: (3208±35)keV.142Cs: (7329±20)keV,143Cs: (6287+40/-250)keV,143Ba: (4259±40)keV,144Cs: (8451±30)keV,145Cs: (7358±70)keV.146Cs: (9300±900)keV,146Ba: (4280±100)keV.146La: (6175±100)keV. The results are compared with experimental results of direct mass measurements and some predictions by mass formulae.

Notes: Summary Nosiheptide (9671 R.P.) isolated fromStreptomyces actuosus 40037 (NRRL 2954) is a sulfur-containing polypeptidic antibiotic, quite different from all the other members of this family. Very active in vitro against gram-positive bacteria, it is inactive in vivo in experimentally infected mice. Not toxic, even at high dose, it may be used as a feed additive for chickens and pigs and it shows a favourable effect on the growth and conversion index.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary It follows from the geophysical facts that in prospecting, especially for ore, an universal magnetic instrument with a relative measuring accuracy of 0.1 p. c. is completely adequate. The field components are compensated by means of bar magnets. A magnetic needle suspended under tension serves here as the zero indicator. The vertical component is determined by means of deflectors. Apart from research into their scientific basis, the new magnetic materials are being examined in respect of their most suitable practical application. The temperature coefficients of the magnetic moment of permanent bar magnets are measured. The theory of deflectors is given. The experimental research on various highly permeable newer alloys shows that the magnetic induction in deflectors composed of such materials is in actual fact dependent only on their geometrical proportions. In particular descriptions are given of prospecting apparatus with offset-scales (Ablenkungsschienen) and of the type known as Kohlrausch-variometers (Einstabvariometer). The desired accuracy of 0.1 p. c. inH andZ is already being achieved by direct indicator reading of the torsion needle.
