    Notes: Rotational barriers and 15N chemical shifts have been measured in a number of ureas and thioureas. As anticipated on the basis of the 15N shifts, several previously unobserved rotational barriers could be detected by using lanthanide reagents or a high field spectrometer. Nearly constant effects on both the rotational activation energy and the 15N shift are produced on going from ureas to the corresponding thioureas, and correlations are found between the ΔG

    Notes: The influence of the degree of polymerization of oligomers (1 ≤ l ≤ 50) on the reactivity of the OH endgroups is exemplified by the reaction of oligoterephthalates of phenolphthalein with benzoyl chloride under ϑ-conditions. It is found that with increasing chain length l the hydroxyl group activity increases according to an S-form law. It is suggested that the ester groups of the macromolecule influence the activity of the OH endgroups due to solvation effects. This suggestion is confirmed theoretically and experimentally.

Diese werden ebenfalls durch einen Alternativweg synthetisiert: die Kondensation von Endo-9,10-o-phenylen-2,3-dichlor-9,10-dihydro-1,4-anthrachinonen (1) mit 2-Aminopyridin. Chinolin bzw. Isochinolin in Ethanol ergibt die Verbindungen 9a-c. Diese werden anschließend in Eisessig zu den Verbindungen 5, 6, 7 cyclisiert, deren Struktur durch Elementaranalyse und spektroskopische Daten gesichert wird.

    Notes: The tensile behavior of blends of linear polyethylene (PE) and isotactic polypropylene (PP) was examined in relation to their morphology. Yield stress increases monotonically with increasing PP content, while true ultimate strength is much lower in all blends than in the pure polymers as a result of early fracture. The blends fail at low elongation because of their two-phase structure, consisting of interpenetrating networks or of islands of PE in a PP matrix, as shown by scanning electron microscopy of fracture surfaces and transmission electron microscopy of thin films. While spherulites in PP are very large (∼100 μm in diameter), addition of 10% or more of PE drastically reduces their average size. This, together with the profusion of intercrystalline links introduced by PE, may be associated with maximization of tensile modulus in blends containing ∼80% PP. Introduction of special nucleating agents to PP reduces average spherulite size and is accompanied by slight improvements in modulus. Thin films of blends strained in the electron microscope neck and fibrillate in their PE regions, but fracture cleanly with little fibrillation in areas of PP.

    Notes: A single-stage aerobic continuous process for the conversion of poultry waste into single-cell protein is described. The slurried manure was supplemented by molasses. Kinetics and possible mechanisms for the suggested conversion-scheme have been investigated. A Box-Wilson experimental design has been employed to elucidate the effect of environmental conditions on reactor performance. Temperature, pH, and percent solids concentration in the feed (media composition) were the independent process variables, while the minimum residence time for the nearly complete utilization of total uric acid and ammonia nitrogen, the amount of carbon required per gram of nitrogen consumed, and protein content of the product were considered as dependent variables. Optimal environmental conditions for the minimum raw material cost and for the maximum percent protein, lysine, and methionine content of the product were determined. The operating conditions of 25°C, pH 7.5, 1.5% solids in the feed, and a residence time of 8.1 hr were found to be the most appropriate conditions maximizing the “profit” function, which is defined as the difference between the product value and raw material cost.

    Notes: A computer model is described which models an asynchronous population of E. coli by using a large, but finite number of representative single cells. Asynchrony generation and maintenance occurs at the single cell level by modulating the activity of an enzyme responsible for septum formation. Such modulation introduces cycle time imprecision and does not require the introduction of any new parameters into the single-cell model. Based on comparisons to experiment, reasonable predictions are possible for changes of cellular dry weight during exponential growth and turbidostat washout, and overall chemostat cell yields and changes in cell number, glucose concentration, and cell size distribution for a chemostat subject to a step change in dilution rate. Additionally, a correlation between cell RNA content and size is predicted as is an inertial effect when chemostat residence time is decreased under conditions of initially high glucose concentrations. Limitations imposed by the model's finite nature and their solutions are discussed.

    Notes: Soluble conjugates of pepsin and carboxypeptidase A were prepared by covalent linkage of the enzymes to an amino derivative of dextran. By fractionating the dextran derivatives before and after enzyme coupling, three conjugates, with median Stokes radii between 4.0 and 11.7 nm and with a range of 25% of the median, were prepared from each enzyme. The pepsin and carboxypeptidase A conjugates contained about 35% and 3% protein, respectively. Both types had specific activities close to those of the native enzymes and were stable at -20°C. The pH-activity curve was unaffected by linkage of either enzyme to dextran. The stabilities at 30°C of pepsin at pH 6-7 and carboxypeptidase A at pH 3.5-9.0 were increased by linkage to dextran. No significant amount of unbound enzyme was released from either type of conjugate in skim milk. The molecular sizes, deduced from the intrinsic viscosities and the diffusion coefficients of all conjugates, were close enough to the Stokes radii to indicate that the molecules were approximately spherical. Physical measurements also indicated that the molecules were dextranlike and highly hydrated.
