Notes: Abstract Using antisera against the alpha, the beta or the complex of both chains of HLA-DR antigens, we have studied the role of individual chains of HLA-DR antigens in activation of T cells in autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction (AMLR). Alpha chain-specific antibody, not anti-beta chain serum prevented T cells from acquiring responsiveness to interleukin-2 (IL-2), suppressed the production of 1L-2, and inhibited the T cell proliferative response in both primary and secondary AMLR cultures. However, proliferation of already activated IL-2 reactive T cells supported by IL-2 was not affected by any of the four different types of anti-DR sera used. Fifty to sixty percent of T cells activated by AMLR or by PHA possessed DR antigens and functioned well as stimulator cells in secondary AMLR cultures. Moreover, the stimulatory activity of these DR-positive T cells was suppressed by the anti-alpha chain, not by the beta chain-specific antibody. Since continuous proliferation of T cells requires IL-2 and since nonactivated T cells are not sensitive to IL-2 and are unable to absorb this growth factor, we conclude the following: (1) The alpha, not the beta chain of HLA-DR antigens seems to be the structure responsible for enabling resting T cells to respond to IL-2 and induce production of IL-2 in AMLR. (2) Once T cells have acquired responsiveness to IL-2 and the growth factor has been produced, there is no further requirement for HLA-DR antigens, but the availability of IL-2 determines the level and extent of proliferation of IL-2 sensitive T cells.

Notes: [Auszug] C3H/HeJ mouse spleen cells (107 cells ml""1) were cultured with LPS in the presence of (10 mM LiCl) to determine whether LiCl affects the B-cell nonresponsiveness to LPS in these cells. (Preliminary tests suggested that lOmM is the optimal concentration of LiCl.) In the presence, but not the ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This report discusses two primary liver tumours which developed spontaneously and which have not been described in roe deer before. These were a Haemangioma cavernosum in a liver celladenom and a solitary, primary malignes Lymphom which is best classified as a B-cell Lymphom.

Notes: Summary Cyclotetracosane exhibits complex phase behaviour in the solid state as well as in the melt as evidenced by complementary methods, DSC, BRILLOUIN scattering, dielectric constant and PE-MAS 13c-NMR. Three solid phases have been verified, one of them — within the range from 299.5 to 312 K — exhibits extremely high molecular mobility. Between the start of melting, 312 K, and the first order transition at ∼ 321 K a mesomorphic type region develops. Two additional transitions have been detected in the melt. That occuring at 361 K (DSC), 356 K (BRILLOUIN data) resembles the Tu as observed in n-alkanes.

Notes: Summary By variable temperature proton enhanced magic angle spinning 13C NMR below Tg individual conformational diads could be resolved for glassy phase segments in semicrystalline erythrodiisotactic poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene). An assignment based on γ-shift increments associated with antigauche conformational transitions is given. In addition an improved interpretation of conformational effects in the glassy phase solid state spectrum of amorphous threodiisotactic poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene) is presented.

Notes: Summary The first results are reported about the conformational analysis of an amorphous polymer in the glassy state by means of proton enhanced variable-temperature magic angle spinning 13C NMR experiments. In amorphous threodiisotactic poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene) at 220 K different conformational diads could be resolved and assigned. From the spectrum of the glassy polymer the shift increment associated with a conformational change of main chain bonds from anti to gauche is determined. In addition the populations of the conformations of CH-CH bonds and of CH-CH-CH2 bond pairs of poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene)s are determined in the glassy state and energy differences between these conformations are estimated.

Notes: Abstract A crystalline mesophase state in which molecules show conformational mobility is discussed for cyclododecane and octamethyltetrasiloxane.13C and29Si solid state NMR spectra show changes of the resonance signals which can be explained by changes of the conformation. The transition temperatures in the NMR spectra are correlated with the thermal transitions detected by DSC. Comparisons with the solution spectra give evidence that in case of octamethyltetrasiloxane, the conformational mobility is determined mainly by the molecular packing in the crystal, while packing effects are neglegibly small for cyclododecane. The data are discussed with concern to the corresponding linear chain molecules, i. e. poly(ethylene) and poly(dimethylsiloxane).

Notes: Summary Several dialkoxicarbenium ions have proved to initiate the cationic polymerization of styrene. In order to elucidate the mechanism of initiation, some of these dialkoxicarbenium ions were reacted with 1.1-diphenyl ethene and the reaction products are described.

Notes: Abstract The macrobenthic fauna associated withFucus at a station in the Kiel Fjord was investigated from June 1978 until June 1979. The predominant group in number as well as in biomass were gammarids. They formed, together with the isopodsIdotea spp., approximately 95 % of the total average annual biomass. The total dry weight of all macrobenthic animals (excl.Littorina spp.) increased from 1.9 g per kgFucus in May to about 16 g in June–August, and dropped to 8.3 g in September. Winter average dry weight values were only about 6 % of the summer values.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary During a field study in different swamps of Uganda, 1977, about 60 Whale-headed Storks were observed with regard to their feeding behaviour. In particular when searching for food, the birds avoid the neighbourhood of members of their own species. Food searching takes place during the day, with peaks in morning and evening. Two types of food searching can be distinguished: lurking and stalking. While stalking the head remains stationary about 60% of the time. In this way a better perception of prey might be possible. The Whale-headed Stork preys mainly on bigger fishes, to a less account on reptiles and amphibians. More than 50% of the attempts to catch prey are successful.
