Notes: Abstract Tests on agar suggested that several fungicides, insecticides and acaricides could be recommended for use with the fungus, Verticillium lecanii (Zimm) Viégas; some chemicals, benodanil, oxycarboxin, iprodione, vinclozolin, dinocap, carbaryl, dicofol, dienochlor, pirimicarb, permethrin and white oil are in theory sufficiently innocuous to V. lecanii for spraying simultaneously with is spores while separate aphlications would be recommended for diflubenzuron which is slightly more toxic. Results of tests on aphids with some of the compounds of greater but intermediate toxicity on agar, suggested that separate applications are advisable with bupirimate, pyrazaphos, triforine, cyhexatin, dioxathion and tetradifon but any use of zineb is best avoided. The most toxic compounds on agar in this study were thiram, captan, maneb, mancozeb, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, fenarimol, imazalil, BTS 40542, quinomethionate, fluotrimazole and diazinon. Of these compounds tested with V. lecanii on aphids, captan, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, quinomethionate and thiram proved to be incompatible with V. lecanii but fenarimol proved relatively harmless. On the basis of the results of this study, careful selection of pesticides and fungicides would permit the combined use of V. lecanii and chemicals in integrated control programmes.

Notes: Summary Purified nuclei from rat testes interstitial cells were incubated with an equimolar complex of [3H]retinoic acid and purified cellular retinoic acid-binding protein (cRABP) and with ATP. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and radiofluorographic analysis of the nuclear fractions indicated the presence of 3 highly labeled receptors for retinoic acid which were distinct from cRABP. These data demonstrate that retinoic acid binds to 3 novel nuclear acceptors of which cRABP does not appear to be a part.

Notes: Abstract In laboratory bioassays, aphid mortality rose while killing time decreased with increasing spore concentrations of Verticillium lecanii. However, in the glasshouse, the ability of the fungus to be spread among aphid populations on chrysanthemums quickly masked the initial effects of spraying different spore concentration. Hundred-fold differences in spore concentrations produced equally good control of the aphid, Myzus persicae, in the glasshouse.

Notes: Summary Adaptation to two antipurines, 8-azaguanine and 6-mercaptopurine, has resulted in increased resistance to the inducing agent without modifying an original resistance to sulfanilamide in a strain of Chilomonas paramecium. In the case of isoniazid, a sulfonamide-resistant strain proved to be much more susceptible than the normal strain. Adaptation has reduced this susceptibility but, so far, has not brought sensitivity back to the level of the normal strain. However, this adaptation of a sulfonamide-resistant strain to isoniazid has not appreciably decreased the original resistance to sulfanilamide. The effects of 5-bromouracil and 2,6-diaminopurine were negligible and in each case “adaptation” caused no apparent change in a previous sulfonamide-resistance. Benzimidazole, although moderately inhibitory for all strains tested, also did not modify a preexisting sulfonamideresistance.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of the flagellar apparatus of the marine quadriflagellate green algaTetraselmis subcordiformis is described in detail. Special consideration is given to the functional significance of the contractile rhizoplast and also to a complex structure which anchors the flagellar apparatus to the cell membrane and theca. The flagellar apparatus lies at the base of a deep apical depression. Four basal bodies lie in a zigzag row with their long axes nearly parallel. Outer adjacent pairs of basal bodies are structurally linked by a Z-shaped, ribbon-like structure. A striated fiber (transfiber) connects each outer basal body with the inner basal body of the opposite, mirror image pair. A complex system of four laminated oval discs (rhizanchora), microtubule rootlets and fibrous material anchor the flagellar apparatus and rhizoplasts to the plasma membrane and theca. A 4-2-4-2 arrangement of microtubule rootlets is present. Rhizoplasts, which are contractile organelles, branch into five distinct arms and associate with the near outer basal body and each of the four rhizanchora. Rhizoplast contraction is thought to be linked to flagellar activity and may act to alter the direction of motion of the cell.

    Notes: A critical analysis of the data for the specific heat from 15 K to 300 K of two samples of 241Am and one sample of 243Am leads to a set of “best” values. From these the thermodynamic functions are calculated, giving (C p)298 = 25.5 ± 1 J mol−1 K−1 and S 298 = 55.4 ± 2 J mol−1 K−1. The derived Debye characteristic temperature θD is estimated as 120 ± 20 K and the electronic specific heat coefficient γ as 1 ± 1 mJ mol−1 K−2.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé 1.
Notes: Summary 1. The occurrence of Chirocephalus diaphanus Prévost in two habitats of somewhat different character is described from observations extending over a number of years. 2. The records in both cases underline the sporadic and irregular occurrence of this species. 3. The number of generations occurring during the course of a year appears to be related to the frequency with which the habitat dries out or is subjected to other unfavourable conditions. In general a second generation does not overlap the first and only appears when the habitat becomes wet again. after an interval of drying out. 4. The pattern of natural occurrence is discussed in the light of experimental work on conditions affecting development and hatching of the eggs. 5. A sequence of events is suggested by which viable eggs are enabled to remain unhatched while the habitat dries out, to survive desiccation, and finally to complete development to maturity in a very short period. 6. The possible effects of freezing of the habitat are discussed.

Notes: Summary 1. An apparatus suitable for the rearing of Simuliid larvae is described. It allows for the continuous and rapid circulation and aeration of the water supply, and provides a range of current speeds suitable to larvae from fast flowing waters. 2. The results of rearing the larvae of Simulium ornatum var. nitidifrons are described. The greatest mortality occurred in the first larval instar. The time taken from hatching from the egg to emergence of the adult ranged from five to eight weeks at 17°C.

Notes: Abstract The Ariel 6 X-ray instruments observed 0115+63 during 1980 December 16–30, when the mean flux was ∼ 150 millicrab. Analysis of the ∼ 3.6s pulsations given a refined orbital period of 24.3155 ± 0.0002 days and a periastron angle of 47°. 15 ± 0°.13, setting a limit on the rate of advance of periastron since 1978 of 0.11 yr−1. During the observation the pulse period was decreasing faster than during the 1978 outburst, but in the 3 year interval there had been a spin down.
