    Description: Photoelectric observations of 13 lunar occultation disappearances during a March 1979 Hyades passage are reported. Three double stars (SAO 93925 = Fin 342 = 70 Tau, SAO 93961 = ADS 3248, and SAO 95419 = Kui 24) and one possible double (SAO 93950 = 75 Tau) were detected. A brief description is given of the Purdue University pulse-counting photometer as modified for occultation observations.

    Description: One series of data comprising the present J, H, K broadband IR photometry of the cataclysmic binary system U Geminorum over the course of two orbital cycles was obtained several days before an outburst, while a second was gathered when the system had almost completely returned to quiescence from that outburst. In quiescence, the M4-M5.5 red dwarf star supplies most of the IR luminosity of the system, while the light curves at this time are tidally induced ellipsoidal variations of the red dwarf which exhibit an amplitude such that the red dwarf must fill, or nearly fill, its Roche lobe. This shows directly that Roche lobe overflow is important in cataclysmic variable stars. The range of the disk IR colors after outbursts suggest that cool and optically thick gas, together with optically thin gas, supply most of the IR light of the disk.

    Description: Several Large Magellanic and Small Magellanic Cloud H II regions were observed at 50 and 100 microns. Observations were made on three flights of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory using a six channel detector system. Fully sampled maps were made simultaneously at both wavelengths. The integrated properties of the H II regions are listed and interpretations of the results regarding stellar formation are presented.

    Description: A Very Large Array (VLA) 1.465-GHz map of the radio galaxy 3C 293 shows that the source, which is unusual in that it is dominated by a steep-spectrum extended core, has a two-sided Z-shaped structure whose physical association with the galaxy VV 5-33-12 is now clear. The core is resolved by the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) at 1.666-GHz, and the VLA at 15.035 GHz, into an inner, two-sided structure within 1 kpc of the center of VV 5-33-12, and curved bridges of emission linking this structure to the large-scale emission. The major axis of the core lies 35 deg from the major axes of the emission bridges that make up the bar of the large-scale Z structure, and 60 deg from the minor axis of VV 5-33-12. Precessional and buoyant-refraction models for these misalignments are discussed.

    Description: The discoveries made with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) are reviewed. Findings on large-scale extended infrared emission associated with the solar system and the Galaxy and medium-scale extended infrared emission associated with zodiacal dust bands and infrared cirrus clouds are described. Comets have been found to be much dustier than previously thought. Solid material orbits Vega and other stars, and emission from cool interstellar material has been traced throughout the Galaxy up to the poles. Stars in the process of formation have been detected. The far-infrared sky away from the galactic plane has been found to be dominated by spiral galaxies, some of which emit more than 50 percent and as much as 98 percent of their energy in the infrared.

    Description: Stellar rotation periods recently determined from short-term variations in Ca II H and K emission-line flux associated with starspot activity can be combined with both rotational spectral-line-broadening velocity measurements and independent measurements of stellar radii to give the inclination of the star's rotation axis to the line of sight. Assuming that the limits of distribution of sunspots on the sun apply similarly to solar-type stars, interferometric measurements of stellar radii in Ca II H and K flux may be performed to determine the clock-like, on-the-plane-of-the-sky orientation as well. Various stellar-radius measuring techniques are discussed, and photon limits on the measurability of this latter parameter are derived for Ca II H and K speckle interferometry. The accuracy with which the space orientation of stars can be determined is discussed in the context of existing data as well as photon limits. The importance of determining the space orientation of stars is then discussed, with emphasis on its important application to the present search for extrasolar planetary systems.

    Description: Observations simultaneously made at visual (B, V, and R) wavelengths, at 1, 1.4, and 3.4 mm and at 1.3, 2, 6, and 20 cm of 9 QSOs and BL Lac objects are reported. The range of the millimeter-visual spectral index alpha sub mv was only 0.65-0.82, typical of optically thin synchrotron emission. This may indicate that the electrons radiating synchrotron emission in this portion of the spectrum are not subjected to large radiation losses, and therefore relativistic bulk motion with Doppler factors of about 10 are required. The visual spectral index is much more broadly distributed and typically larger than alpha sub mv. The spectral energy distributions have not changed much in the last two to five years except for 2251+15 and perhaps 0235+164. Only 1749+09 shows a sharp spectral break shortward of 1 mm. Sixteen other sources were observed at 1 mm, of which seven were detected.

    Description: Near-infrared high-resolution scans (3.5 arcsec) of the core of the Orion Molecular Cloud (no. 1) have revealed 26 sources. Eleven of these are identified with faint visible stars. The remainder are thought to be highly reddened stars embedded in the molecular cloud and include at least two of the previously known infrared cluster members. Comparison of the distribution of infrared and visible stars on the plane of the sky and in an infrared color-magnitude diagram shows that the obscured infrared sources form a separate cluster of stars. The newly discovered sources appear to fall into two categories: (1) optically identified stars probably on the front surface of the cloud and associated with the Trapezium cluster; and (2) unidentified infrared stars probably associated with the molecular cloud and the embedded infrared cluster. It is plausible that the newly discovered infrared sources in the OMC-1 region are stars less massive than the previously known members and younger than visible stars of similar mass in Orion Association.

    Description: Over 1,000 differentially determined photoelectric BVRI observations and the resulting light curves are presented for 24 bright Cepheids accessible from Northern Hemisphere observatories. The internal precision of these data is shown to be better than + or - 0.01 mag, and the accuracy of transformation to the Johnson BVRI system is nearly as good.

    Description: Narrow-banded emissions were observed by the Planetary Radio Astronomy experiment on the Voyager 1 spacecraft as it traversed the Io plasma torus. These waves occur between harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency and are the Jovian analogue of electrostatic emissions observed and theoretically studied for the terrestrial magnetosphere. The observed frequencies always include the component near the upper hybrid resonant frequency, (fuhr) but the distribution of the other observed emissions varies in a systematic way with position in the torus. A refined model of the electron density variation, based on identification of the fuhr line, is included. Spectra of the observed waves are analyzed in terms of the linear instability of an electron distribution function consisting of isotropic cold electrons and hot losscone electrons. The positioning of the observed auxiliary harmonics with respect to fuhr is shown to be an indicator of the cold to hot temperature ratio. It is concluded that this ratio increases systematically by an overall factor of perhaps 4 or 5 between the inner and outer portions of the torus.
