Notes: Summary A physical map of the COB region in mtDNA of yeast has been established. This region harbours a split gene coding for apocytochrome b. It includes restriction sites of seven endonucleases (EcoRI, HindII, HindIII, HaeIII, HpaII, AluI and BamHI). Various mtDNA sequences of this region, retained in a series of genetically characterized rho− clones have been allocated to this map. The combination of this physical map with a genetic map of the rho− clones revealed that 1) cob− mutational sites spread over 8,400 bp, 2) mutations in sequences coding for apocytochrome b map in five distinct segments which are separated by intervening sequences with minimum lengths from 350 to 1,900 bp.

Notes: Alkali treatment of corn stover improves the avaliability of cellulose and hemicellulose for enzymatic attack. Treatments were carried out for 1 to 60 min at temperatures and NaOH concentrations ranging from 100 to 150°C and 0 to 2%, respectively. Solubilization of the stover and sugar production by enzymatic hydrolysis (Trichoderma viride cellulase) of the solid residue and the dissolved solids were used to measure the effect of caustic treatment. At 150°C and 2% NaOH concentration, 65% of the original stover was dissolved after 5 min and 52% saccharificatin (g sugar/g stover) of the residue and dissolved solids by enzymatic hydrolysis was achieved compared to 20% for untreated corn stover.

Description: Balmer emission lines from cataclysmic variables often have nearly equal intensities rather than the rapid decrement predicted by simple nebular theory. Traditionally, this has been interpreted in terms of local thermodynamic equilibrium emission from a dense gas with small volume located just above the accretion disk. It is shown that the intense radiation field within a close binary system can affect excited state populations and optical emission in ways which allow a relatively low density gas to closely mimic the high density situation. In at least one case, the old nova V603 Aql, the emitting gas has a low density and nearly fills the orbital plane of the system. If this is characteristic of other systems, then the determination of orbital parameters and masses of cataclysmic variables from emission line radial velocities, as well as the prediction of soft X-ray emission from accreting binaries, will be affected.
