Description: Cell design criteria were established which can result in a safe lithium/thionyl chloride cell. A cell vent, a low area internal anode cell, cell balance and composition of the cathode-electrolyte solution were found to be important factors in the design of a safe cell. In addition to routine testing, both undischarged and discharged cells were subjected to electrical abuse, environmental abuse and mechanical abuse without disassembly.

Description: The geostationary and polar satellites comprising the current operational system are discussed. The data acquisition capabilities of both satellite types and their complementary functions are reviewed. The advanced very high resolution radiometer on the TIROS N satellites is particularly addressed along with the imaging and atmospheric sounding instrumentation aboard the GOES satellites. The dissemination of the satellite data to the prospective users is also discussed.

Description: The process of hydrogen transport through alpha-Ti involves simultaneous diffusion and phase boundary reactions at both surfaces, with the relative effect on each surface depending on the extent of surface contamination as well as the physical dimensions of the titanium membrane used. It is shown by the present study that hydrogen permeation in commercially pure alpha-Ti increases exponentially with temperature and is dependent on the first power of the input pressure, whether the surface is as-polished, preoxidized or prenitrided. Permeation decreases in the case of the as-polished condition if nitride or oxide films are formed at the surface in contact with source hydrogen, while increasing slightly for the same condition if such films are formed at the hydrogen exit surface.

Description: The development of a multifrequency upconverter-maser system for the DSN has created the need to develop a closed-cycle refrigerator (CCR) capable of providing more than 3 watts of refrigeration capability at 4.5 K. In addition, operating concerns such as the high cost of electrical power consumption and the loss of maser operation due to CCR failures require that improvements be made to increase the efficiency and reliability of the CCR. One refrigeration method considered is the replacement of the Joule-Thomson expansion circuit with a magnetic refrigeration. Magnetic refrigerators can provide potentially reliable and highly efficient refrigeration at a variety of temperature ranges and cooling power. The concept of magnetic refrigeration is summarized and a literature review of existing magnetic refrigerator designs which have been built and tested and that may also be considered as possibilities as a 4 K to 15 K magnetic refrigeration stage for the DSN closed-cycle refrigerator is provided.

Description: An analysis of a case study of the favorable impact of satellite data assimilation on model cyclone prediction is discussed. Also discussed is the isolation of systematic biases in the vertical structure of satellite derived temperatures which in all probability negatively impact the prediction of ocean cyclones during periods of rapid baroclinic amplification. Access to CYBER 205 and transfer of software for Eulerian and quasi-Lagrangian diagnostic studies of atmospheric circulation are discussed.

Description: The primary objective of the advanced fighter technology integration/F-16 (AFTI/F-16) development program is to demonstrate advanced fighter technologies to improve weapon delivery and aircraft survivability. Instrumentation and data processing for monitoring aircraft operation during flight testing is necessary not only for safety-of-flight considerations but also for rapid evaluation of flight test results. The complexity of the AFTI/F-16 aircraft necessitates an extensive capability to accomplish data goals; this paper describes that capability and the resultant product.

Description: Johnson et al. (1982) have provided a detailed comparison between a thoroughly documented transonic flow with shock-induced separations and solutions of the flow using the Navier-Stokes equations. According to this comparison, there were several deficiencies in the computations. The present investigation takes into account new experimental data which have been obtained in a larger wind tunnel with the same test model for a wider range of freestream Mach numbers. The results of new Navier-Stokes computations using more compatible boundary conditions are shown, and the effects of the turbulence model choice on predicting Mach number trends are assessed.
