    Notes: Pirt's model for microbial growth and product formation are reparameterized to obtain multiresponse models with common parameters. The dependent variables in the models are related through the available electron and carbon balance constraints. Covariance adjustment is used to reduce the growth model to a unit variate linear model with covariates. Therefore, standard multiple regression programs can be used to obtain combined point and interval estimates of true biomass energetic yield, true product yield and maintenance coefficient. This approach may yield “better” estimates than the maximum likelihood approach when an appropriately selected subset of covariates is used. Nonlinear estimation procedures are also considered; these procedures are efficient with few responses; however, as the number of responses per observation increase, they may require a lot of computing time. For illustration several data from the biochemical engineering literature are analyzed by the proposed methods.

    Notes: A generalized equation explicitly relating reduced density to reduced temperature and reduced pressure has been developed for calculating liquid densities of pure compounds on a digital computer. The analytical formulation is based mainly on a modified corresponding states principle and the graphical correlation of Lydersen, Greenkorn, and Hougen. The calculated densities from the equation reproduce the literature data within 2% for sixty-two saturated liquids and nineteen compressed liquids.With the aid of a pseudocritical method and a generalized equation of vapor pressure, the same equation is readily applied to the estimation of liquid mixture densities. The method of Prausnitz and Gunn is chosen for the evaluation of pseudocritical constants. For fifteen binary systems, one ternary system, and one quinary system, the one hundred fifty-nine calculated densities agree with the literature data to within 3%. This method is limited to pseudoreduced temperatures less than 1.0.

    Notes: A pore-diffusion model is developed for temperature swing separation in a packed bed of sorbent. The model is applied to interpret experimental data for separation of H2 of CH4 in a packed bed of activated carbon operated in the temperature swing mode, at pressures up to 5.52 MPa. Experimental results on the effects of total pressure, particle size, adsorption temperature, and flow rate on separation efficiency compared favorably to the model predictions. The importance of pore diffusion in separation has been clearly demonstrated.

    Notes: The factors affecting the efficacy of a closely packed bed of mixed cotton and a supporting fiber (Teflon, glass, Dynel) were evaluated for oil-in-water dispersions. Several other water-organic systems were also tested. Superficial velocities ranged from 0.2 to 3.5 ft./min. Successful coalescence was attained at interfacial tensions as low as 3.5 dynes/cm. Dispersed phase viscosity was varied form 1.4 to 137 centipoise. For a mixed-fiber bed with a specific ratio of fiber species, there is an optimum bed depth for best performance. High-speed cinephotomicrographic observations at 100 × and up to 4,000 frames/sec. indicated that fiber wettability is not the most important factor for successful operation.

    Notes: The authors previously reported work on the kinetics and mechanism of the uncatalyzed thermal oxidation of isotactic polypropylene. The data, obtained form infrared absorption spectra of the carbonyl region, was utilized in developing the theoretical expressions presented. This paper summarizes this work and presents further evidence which substantiates the derived expressions. The additional evidence is obtained from infrared absorption spectra involving the apparent hydroperoxy region and from measurements on the rate of formation of volatile products. Some recent pertinent literature is also discussed.

    Notes: The microstructure of semicrystalline polymers solidified with and without concurrent applied strain is reviewed. Fluid flow in the filling and packing stages of injection-molding are discussed. Observations of the microstructures of a number of polymers under various conditions are described. In general, the microstructure is extremely inhomogeneous and anisotropic; a skin layer is highly oriented (or, in some cases, finely granular), whereas the core is composed of larger, isotropic spherulites. The principles governing the formation of such microstructures are given. Relations between microstructure and macroscopic properties are briefly described.

    Notes: This paper presents some of the important results obtained from a series of studies on cohesive fracture in adhesively bonded joints. Due to the complex nature of the adhesive joint fracture, an accurate and efficient numerical method particularly suitable for the present problem has been developed, based on a hybrid-stress finite element formulation. Fracture characteristics in adhesively bonded joints are described in terms of local crack-tip deformation and stress fields in the polymeric adhesive layer. Effects of material properties, joint geometry, and bond-line thickness on the crack behavior are studied for classical lap-shear and currently used double-cantilever-beam joints. Of particular interest are the crack-tip stress intensities in the adhesive layer; their values are obtained for several cases of practical importance.
