Notes: The geophone spurious frequency is modeled as the resonance of the planar motion of a spider spring carrying a moving mass. An analytic solution is found using the Castigliano method by assuming that the spring arm is a single-mode vibrating cantilever beam. The spring shape is found from this analysis. When the typical spring has a circumferentially varying cross-section, the Castigliano method is no longer applicable. A dimensional analysis is used as an approximate method for general design. Based on the theoretical result, a rotational fixture and a translational fixture were designed for experimental purposes. A low-noise fixture and a phase-averaging technique provide the amplitude and spurious resonance in the frequency domain. Finally, a test is run by using a rotational fixture to compare with the approximate method of spurious frequency prediction. Very good agreement between prediction and experiment is found.

Notes: In subtropical latitudes temperate crops can be grown during the cool months but the growing season is restricted by the termination and beginning of hot weather. Postponing sowing date in south Florida from October to November to January resulted in 150, 130 and 110-d growing seasons respectively. Dry matter (DM) yields of turnip, swede, rape and kale were lowered by each later sowing date and shorter growing season, and crude protein (CP) concentration was the same as for, or was increased by late sowing. In vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of turnip, swede and rape leaves was not affected by sowing date, but roots of turnip and swede from the earlier sowings and longer growing seasons were more digestible. Yield of the four species depended on harvest management as well as date of sowing and length of growing season. Total yield of turnip and swede were unaffected by harvest management but multiple cutting resulted in greater leaf yields and smaller root yields, whereas stockpiling resulted in smaller leaf yields and larger root yields. Kale produced more DM when harvested once at the end of the winter growing season but rape produced the greatest DM yield when sown in October and harvested

Notes: Uptake rates of L-alanine, L-serine and L-aspartate and trans-membrane electrical potentials (Δψ) were determined for a pH range in the external medium between 3.5 and 9.0. The proton electrochemical gradients (〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00319317:PPL351:PPL_351_mu1" location="equation/PPL_351_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉) were calculated from Δψ, pH of the medium, and an assumed cytoplasmic pH of 7.5. At external amino-acid concentrations of 0.1 mol m−3, where carrier-mediated uptake dominates total uptake, a linear correlation between uptake rates and 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00319317:PPL351:PPL_351_mu1" location="equation/PPL_351_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉 is obtained, which extrapolates to zero uptake at zero 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00319317:PPL351:PPL_351_mu1" location="equation/PPL_351_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉. This corroborates the contention that neutral and acidic amino acids are taken up by Lemna gibba L. by H+-cotransport.

Notes: In Lemna gibba L. a 2 h pretreatment with the amino-acid analogue p-fluorophenylalanine p-FPA inhibited subsequent uptake of L-alanine and reduced the transient depolarization of the plasmalemma caused by L-alanine. Uptake of 3–0-methylglucose was less affected. There was no effect of p-fluorophenylalanine on the resting potential or on the fusicoccin- or light-dependent hyperpolarization of the cells. Furthermore, fusicoccin-stimulation of uptake of L-alanine and 3–0-methylglucose was also unaffected. The results suggest that p-FPA pretreatment selectively acts on the H+-amino-acid co-transport carrier, that the H+-hexose co-transport carrier is much less affected, and that the proton pump appears to be unaffected by p-FPA.

Notes: Sixty day-old male chicks were fed three rations differing in riboflavin (R), vitamin B6, and niacin (N) content. The three rations were: (1) an adjusted basal ration containing R, B6 and N 10% above National. Research Council recommendations, (2) a ration containing 75% of the 3 vitamins as in (1), and (3) with 125% of the 3 vitamins as in (1). Birds were grown for 51 days and the breast meat harvested and analyzed for proximate composition, 3 vitamins and 9 minerals. No significant differences in the nutrient content of meat were found attributable to the dietary treatments. Results indicated that broiler meat composition was fairly constant even though birds consumed wide differences in R, B6 and N.

Notes: Eight cultivars of Zea mays plus the wild species Zea diploperennis were screened for seedling saline tolerance up to 3.2% NaCl. The best performances were given by the cultivars Mo 17 and commercial Hawaiian Super Sweet Hybrid. These two were then field grown on coral-cinder beds using drip irrigation with fresh of half-strength sea water (1.5–1.7% dissolved solids). Growth and chemical data for Mo 17 at 12 weeks show reduced growth but the same percentage dry matter. Ash, protein and total sulfur were higher in saline plants, silica and total phosphorus lower. Na, K. Mg, and Cl were elevated and Ca reduced slightly. Fe was also increased in saline plants. Both Mo 17 and Super Sweet Hybrid corn flowered and produced seed which retained essentially normal viability both in fresh and salt water.
