Notes: Based on accurate X-ray diffraction intensity data collected from spherically shaped single crystals, net atomic charges and electron density distributions have been studied for MnO, Mn2SiO4, Mg2Si2O6, LiAlSi2O6 and CaMgSi2O6. Examination of various procedures for determining atomic charges in a given structure has led to the conclusion that the following approach appears to be most reliable. (1) For cations: the number of electrons in the sphere of radius ER, effective distribution radius, which is defined according to the characteristics of radial distribution functions or difference-Fourier maps, is calculated. (2) For oxygen atoms: with the cation charges fixed at the values obtained from the above procedure and the total charge of the crystal constrained to be neutral, oxygen charges are estimated from least-squares refinements using atomic scattering factors. The final charges of atoms examined are less ionic than the corresponding formal ones: those of Li, O, Mg, Al, Si, Ca and Mn are respectively + 0.7 (1), -1.1 to -1.5, + 1.4 (1) to + 1.8, + 2.4(1), + 2.2 (1) to + 2.6, + 1.4 (2) and + 1.2 (1) to + 1.6 e. Residual electron densities between Si and O have been clearly observed in difference-Fourier maps after charge refinements for crystals of LiAlSi2O6, CaMgSi2O6 and Mg2Si2O6.

Notes: Abstract A study was undertaken to ascertain whether vitamin D has a direct action on the mineralization of the dentin in rats made rachitic by a diet low in calcium and deficient in vitamin D. Physiological amounts of vitamin D, given orally to rachitic rats, increased their serum calcium from 4.8±0.5 mg/100 ml to 7.5±0.4 mg/100ml. The mineralization of dentin recovered markedly, although osteoporosis occurred in bone trabeculae. The results suggest that vitamin D increases serum calcium by accelerating bone resorption and that the increased serum calcium level acts directly to mineralize the dentin. When calcium was given to rachitic rats by subcutaneous injection, the serum calcium level increased and mineralization of dentin recovered to the same extent as that observed in rats given vitamin D. These results indicate that recovery of mineralization of rachitic dentin depends primarily on recovery of the serum calcium level and that vitamin D is an indirect factor in the mineralization process.

Notes: Abstract Effects of soil moisture depletion on stem contraction and photosynthesis of potted 3-year-old white ash (Fraxinus americana L.) and 4-year-old red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) seedlings were investigated in greenhouse experiments. White-ash seedlings transpired faster and consequently depleted soil moisture more rapidly than red-pine seedlings. Cumulative stem shrinkage occurred in both species as soils dried and appreciable stem expansion occurred only after soil was reirrigated. Following irrigation, seedlings rehydrated and their stems expanded to about their original diameters within 24 hours in white ash, and in up to 6 days in red pine seedlings. Photosynthesis was decreased in both species as soil dried, but it declined much faster in white ash than in red pine seedlings. Net emission of CO2 by red pine seedlings occurred after 13 days of soil drying. In contrast, white-ash seedlings did not show net CO2 release during severe drought. Several days after droughted white-ash and red-pine seedlings were reirrigated, photosynthesis recovered to pre-drought levels.

Notes: Abstract We studied the salt concentration dependence of the diffusion constant of the highly charged and monodispersed polystyrene latex sphere using the techniques of dynamic light scattering. At extremely low ionic strength, the diffusion constant is smaller than that at the higher ionic strength by 10 % of the latter value. The addition of smal amount of N(CH3) 4 + to the latex solution increases the diffusion constant. These experimental results are explained by the change of the hydrodynamic radius which depends on sizes of the polystyrene core and the structural water surrounding it.

Notes: The mass spectra of alkyl- and chloropyrimidines are recorded. A generalised fragmentation mechanism for the derivatives of pyrimidine is proposed. The principle of α-cleavage for heterocyclic compounds as proposed in the previous paper is shown to be valid for pyrimidine derivatives. Electronic structures of some molecular and intermediate ions are calculated by the openshell CNDO/2 and INDO methods.
