Description: One fireball was photographed during two encounters with Jupiter. Its total luminosity was 120,000 0 mag s (at standard range 100 km). If the luminous efficiency proposed by Cook et al. (1981) for slip flow of a meteoroid in its own vapors is employed, an estimated mass of 11 kg is obtained. A rough absolute magnitude is -12.5. If it is noted that the search was conducted for a total of 223 s during two exposures, a number density near Jupiter of 10 to the -28th/cu cm is estimated for masses of meteoroids of 3 kg and greater. This value is about a factor of six smaller than a rough upper limit reached from an extrapolation from terrestrial observations of meteors and comets.

Description: The shape and orbital characteristics of Phobos, the larger and innermost of Mars' two irregular moons, are discussed and illustrated. Also presented are the high resolution pictures of Phobos that were obtained during the close flybys of Viking Orbiters 1 and 2. The viewing geometry is also given for each picture.

Description: Initial analysis of the Mariner 9 high resolution pictures of Phobos surface features has been completed. A control network of 38 landmarks has been established and used to determine the physical size, shape, orientation, libration, and topography properties of Phobos. The results verified the synchronous rotation of Phobos and revealed a libration of approximately 5 deg in the orbit plane of Phobos. A preliminary map of Phobos, based on the control network analysis, is given.

Description: Simple trigonometric expressions are derived for the right ascensions and declinations of the spin axes of Phobos and Deimos as well as for their prime meridians. Simple expressions are possible since both satellites are in synchronous rotation about Mars and since the orbits of both satellites are accurately modeled as precessing ellipses. Spin axis expressions reflect the offset and precession of the orbit pole about the Laplacian pole. Prime meridian expressions include orbital mean motion, long-period solar perturbations, secular acceleration, and short-period, tidally induced forced libration. These simple expressions agree with rigorous expressions to + or - 0.2 deg.
