Notes: Abstract A Q band interferometer for determining the complex permittivity of materials having dielectric loss factor within 10−3 to 1, has been developed. The technique involves the use of a computer-assisted digital voltmeter for data acquisition and treatment. The method of computing the dielectric parameters from the deduced VSWR and minima displacement is outlined and precision increase with this type of measurement is discussed. Results for polar solutes in non polar and in polar solvants are presented. Measurements on solids within the temperature range 20–400°C are also discussed in conclusion.

Notes: Abstract A Q band interferometer for determining the complex permittivity of solids and liquids between 20°C and 1300°C has been developed. The Roberts and Von Hippel standing-wave method was used. The technique involves the utilization of a computer-assisted digital voltmeter for data acquisition and treatment. Results for a 67SiO2−33Na2O within the temperature range 20–400°C and in the liqid state (950°C) are presented.

Notes: Abstract A Fourier analysis of X-ray diffraction spectra of vitreous 2TiO2.K2O and 2TiO2.Cs2O is presented. The Ti4+ ion is shown to be octahedrally co-ordinated with respect to oxygen, the interionic Ti-O distance being equal to 1.95 Å. The K+ and Cs+ ions are not distributed at random but are placed in contact with the three oxygens of the faces of TiO6 octahedra constituting the network. This proves conclusively that a glass network former is capable of a regular octahedral co-ordination and shows the further need to revise the classic Zachariasen-Warren theory.

Notes: Abstract The Mössbauer and ESR spectra and internal friction behaviour of Na2O-3SiO2 glasses having different redox ratios have been studied. As the redox ratio changes over a considerable range, there is a significant structural change associated with both the Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions, as evidenced from the analysis of the molar volume and Mössbauer data. The ESR data qualitatively supports the Mössbauer data on the Fe3+ ions. The change of internal friction behaviour of these glasses around 50% Fe3+ is described in terms of the structural changes associated with the Fe ions, which is thought to influence the oxygen structure of these glasses. The importance of this structural change on the electronic conductivity behaviour of these types of glasses is mentioned.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of glasses from gels has recently aroused considerable interest both from the theoretical and practical standpoint. The conditions of gel formation which determine the structure of the wet gel are first examined. During the drying process, which is a decisive step in the obtention of monolithic gels, an essential role is played by capillary forces. It is shown that, among the various methods of obtaining monolithic gels, that based on the hypercritical evacuation of the solvent is the most reliable.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to produce an infra-red transmitting chalcogenide glass-ceramic nucleated by an appropriate nucleant. In order to crystallize chalcogenide glasses in a controlled manner a preliminary series of experiments, in which the metals of group IVB of the periodic table of elements were used as nucleants, showed that zirconium is an effective additive. Studies of glass compositionsxZrSe2-(100−x) [As0.1Ge0.3Se0.6] indicated that for values ofx 0.25 and 0.50 mol%, glass-ceramics with high thermomechanical properties were produced. By heat treating at 400° C for 15 h, the glass As0.1Ge0.3Se0.6 with 0.25 mol% ZrSe2 was transformed into a glass-ceramic with a fracture toughness of 0.848 MN m−3/2, a sag point of 530° C and satisfactory infra-red transmission. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the precipitated crystal phase was germanium selenide (GeSe2). The parasite absorption band with a maximum around 800cm−1 generally present in the infra-red spectra was eliminated by adding 0.1 wt% metallic zirconium. The infra-red transmision and thermomechanical properties for glass-ceramics of compositions with 0.50 mol% ZrSe2 were poorer than for those with 0.25 mol% ZrSe2, for the same heat treatment condtions. The kinetics and activation energies of crystallization were studied by means of electron microscopy. The mechanism of controlled crystallization proceeds by the precipitation of crystalline GeSe2 on the ZrSe2 nuclei formed by heat treatment of the initial chalcogenide glass supersaturated in ZrSe2.

Notes: Abstract The method of obtaining monolithic dry gels by hypercritical solvent evacuation is presented. The influence of various parameters on the possibility of obtaining crack-free pieces is studied in some detail. The influence of these parameters on the final properties of the gel is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the determination of configurational changes in glasses in the transformation range is first discussed. For want of a detailed description, a one parameter “fictive temperature” approximation is adopted to characterize glasses stabilized at various temperatures. The Brillouin scattering spectra show that hypersonic velocity and the elastic constantc 11 undergo changes of about 3 and 6% respectively in the temperature range, whereas the variations of the attenuation are up to 50%.

Notes: Abstract The nucleation and crystallization behaviour of a basalt glass-ceramic was studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The interparticle interference effects in the SANS spectra of the different nucleated samples indicate that the number density of crystallites, measured at the longest crystallization time at 710
