Notes: Summary Young baboons were fed semisynthetic, vitamin D-containing diets differing in calcium and/or phosphorus content over a 16 month study period. Diets low in calcium alone or low in both calcium and phosphorus led to the development of radiologic rickets and histologic features of osteomalacia at both 8 and 16 months. The diet which was low in calcium but which had a normal phosphorus content was associated with histologic features of hyperparathyroidism at 16 months; such features did not develop in animals fed the low calcium, low phosphorus diet. Biochemically the low calcium, normal phosphorus diet was associated with a transient fall in serum calcium around 8 months, and a more persistent elevation in serum phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase values during the latter half of the study. These biochemical changes were not seen in the baboons on the low calcium, low phosphorus diet. These results confirm that histological changes can occur as a result of dietary calcium deprivation in vitamin D-replete animals.

Notes: Abstract The known 2-string LCS problem is generalized to finding a Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) for a set of strings. A new, general approach that systematically enumerates common subsequences is proposed for the solution. Assuming a finite symbol set, it is shown that the presented scheme requires a preprocessing time that grows linearly with the total length of the input strings and a processing time that grows linearly with (K), the number of strings, and (∥ℙ∥) the number of matches among them. The only previous algorithm for the generalized LCS problem takesO(K·|S 1|·|S 2|·...|S k |) execution time, where |S i | denotes the length of the stringS i . Since typically ∥ℙ∥ is a very small percentage of |S 1|·|S 2|·...·|S k |, the proposed method may be considered to be much more efficient than the straightforward dynamic programming approach.

Notes: Abstract The light absorption of the phases occurring in the systemsMF2/NiF2 (M=Ba, Sr, Ca) has been investigated. The colour curves of Ba2NiF6 (I) and of BaNiF4 (II) show characteristic differences. The colour curve of SrNiF4 is similar to that of II. The colour curves of the system CaF2/NiF2 are compared with those of the system CaF2/CoF2. From the colour curve of the latter system one can unambiguously infer that mixed cristals Ca1−x Co x F2 (x≤0,01) exist. No evidence could be found for the existence of mixed cristals Ca1−x Ni x F2 by the spectrophtometric method.

Notes: Abstract A detailed study ofJ/ψ hadronic production has been performed in a high statistics experiment (more than 1.5 106 J/ψ observed in their dimuon decay mode). Data have been taken with incident π±,K ±,p ±, on hydrogen and platinum targets, at 150, 200 and 280 GeV/c. We find from the observed nuclear dependance of the cross sections, that about 18% of theJ/ψ are produced diffractively. Using known structure functions of the quarks in the nucleon and in the pion, we derive estimations for the gluon structure functions.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A rapid and simple ring oven methode is described for the qualitative and semiquantitative determination of traces of copper in Ni- and Co-salts. It is based on the exchange reaction and adsorption of copper-sulphide with lead sulphide. A reaction-pipette for the reception of solide substances is described.

Notes: Summary Three groups of young baboons were fed for 16 months on one of three diets. The first group was given a well-tried semisynthetic formula, the second group the same diet save that vitamin D had been omitted, and the third group was given the vitamin D-free diet in which maize replaced the dextrin normally used. Although both groups fed the vitamin D-free diets developed rickets and osteomalacia, the group receiving maize did so far more rapidly and to a much greater degree of severity, as evidenced by clinical, radiological, biochemical, and histological signs. The mechanism by which maize acts remains unclear, but this report serves to emphasize the extremely detrimental effects that might be expected in populations who are deficient in vitamin D and who have predominantly cereal diets.

Notes: Summary Lactose absorption capacity was examined in 641 apparently healthy adolescents and adults (447 males and 194 females with an average age of 22.9 years and an age range of 16–46 years) using a field version of the lactose tolerance test with breath hydrogen determination. In the total sample, 89 lactose absorbers and 552 lactose malabsorbers were identified. Lactose malabsorption was most frequent in a subgroup of Han (Chinese) from northeastern China (229 of 248 subjects, 92.3%). Among 198 Mongols from Inner Mongolia, there were 174 lactose malabsorbers (87.9%). The frequency of lactose malabsorption was lowest in a group of Kazakhs, traditional herders from the northwestern region of Xinjiang (149 of 195 subjects, 76.4%). Reported symptoms of lactose intolerance were significantly more frequent in lactose malabsorbers. The findings in northern Han are similar to the reported lactose malabsorption frequency in southern (mainly overseas) Chinese, and correspond with the absence of animal milk from traditional Chinese diets. The relatively low prevalence of lactose malabsorption among the Kazakhs suggests that lactose persistence may be frequent in herding pastoralist populations of southwest Asia.
