Notes: This paper discusses the Stochastic Dominance (SD) approach to the evaluation of risky assets. Given a set of portfolios, the familiar EV procedure chooses a set of EV-efficient portfolios while the SD procedures choose SD-efficient sets that usually are quite similar to (but not identical with) the EV-efficient set. The SD approach can be employed as a refinement of the EV model or as an alternative method of evaluating portfolios. The SD view has certain conceptual advantages in the screening of a set of portfolios, but the EV model has the important advantage of an optimizing algorithm that builds efficient portfolios. Also, the SD approach requires more data than the EV approach.

Notes: An evaluation of sources of nitrogen in an urban area indicates that it may be difficult to distinguish effects on the quality of underlying ground water. In Nassau County two principal sources of nitrogen are human waste water and fertilized turf. The effects of these sources, combined with other sources such as domestic animals and precipitation, are such that management of one source, i.e. the removal of waste water via sewers, may be less effective than expected.

Notes: Performance characteristics of a pilot-scale scraped-surface heat exchanger (Contherm Model 6 × 2) under UHT operating conditions were evaluated. Outlet temperature and overall heat transfer coefficient (U) were significantly affected by rotational speed of the blades, mass flow rate of feed, feed inlet temperature, steam pressure and solids content of the model low-acid liquid food (soy extracts). The scraping action of the blades greatly improved the performance up to about 350 rpm; higher blade speeds had little or no effect and sometimes decreased U values. Application of dimensionless models showed that the effect of axial Reynolds number (ReA) on the Nusselt number was more significant in the turbulent regime (ReA 〉 1800), while rotational Reynolds number above 105 had a significant effect at all values of ReA between 1200 and 3700. At very high values of the Taylor number (〉 1010) when laminar axial flow conditions prevailed, Nusselt number decreased with increase in rotational Reynolds number.

Notes: Soy protein hydrolyzate (SPH) was investigated to identify the phenolic compounds responsible for antioxidant activity. Three isoflavones–genistein, daidzein, and glycitein–were found in SPH. These are the same isoflavones that have been identified in raw soybeans. No isoflavone glycosides were found in SPH. The phenolic acids found in SPH were caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric, syringic, vanillic, gentisic, and p-hydroxybenzoic acids. The compounds were identified by TLC, GLC and UV spectra. The isoflavones were confirmed by their mass spectra.

Notes: The effect of microwave finish drying of potato chips on their texture, color and oil content was studied. The intermediate moisture content (IMC) of the chips before microwave application and the reducing sugar content of the raw potatoes were the primary variables. The slices were individually submerged in oil at 320° F to various IMC and finish dried with 2500 watts microwave power for 1–3 min. Chip color was rated against PC11 Color Standards. Texture was evaluated subjectively by a panel and objectively by the L.E.E. Kramer Shear Press. Oil determination was made by Soxhlet extraction. The results showed that potato chips removed from the oil at IMC above 13% were unacceptably tough after microwave drying. Potatoes containing more than 0.9% reducing sugar had to be removed from the oil at IMC above 13% in order to obtain acceptable color of the microwave-finished product. Therefore, microwave finishing raises the limiting reducing sugar content from about 0.4 to about 0.9%. Oil content of microwave-finished chips was 90% that of conventional controls

Notes: An intersex specimen of the banded killifish, Fundulus diaphanus, was encountered during the analysis of the annual gametogenic cycle of this species. The simultaneous presence of mature spermatozoa and ova suggests that the potential for self-fertilization existed in this fish. The spontaneous occurrence of this intersex individual, although a rare event, indicates the potential for the development of the synchronous hermaphroditic condition under natural environmental conditions in this normally gonochoristic species.

Notes: Potential relationships between alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Vernal) acetylene reduction activity (ARA) and leghemoglobin content, nodule numbers, shoot biomass, root biomass, or total plant biomass were estimated using linear regression analysis after treatment with a range of concentrations of arsenate, Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and F–. There were highly significant positive linear regressions between ARA and all the other plant values in the control plants, but this linear relationship was significantly altered between ARA and one or more of the other parameters in all treatments. There was also evidence for an alteration of the slope in some of the treatments when compared to control treatments even though a linear model was still applicable.

Notes: SYNOPSIS Panamanian marmosets Saguinus geoffroyi can be infected with Plasmodium vivax. Infections resulting from inoculation of vivax blood from man are generally low-grade but, in many cases, significant infections result from the inoculation of blood from experimentally infected monkeys. Nine of 29 marmosets were infected from man; 9 of 25 from the night monkey Aotus trivirgatus; 13 of 31 from other Panamanian marmosets; and 1 of 1 from a black spider monkey Ateles fusciceps. Average maximum parasitemias for the 4 donor species were, respectively; 2,320; 24,410; 19,380; and 12,160 per cmm. Splenectomy, administration of Imuran, and a combination of splenectomy and administration of Imuran conditioned Panamanian marmosets for infection. Significant parasitemias resulted from infections with the Emperador, Santa Rosa 1, and Achiote strains of vivax malaria. The Emperador strain was passed serially thru 3 marmoset-to-marmoset passages.
