Notes: The viscoelastic behavior of phosphonate derivatives of phosphonylated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was studied by dynamic mechanical techniques. The polymers investigated contained from 0.2 to 9.1 phosphonate groups per 100 carbon atoms and included the dimethyl phosphonate derivative and two derivatives for which the phosphonate ester group was an oligomer of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The temperature dependences of the storage and loss moduli of the dimethyl phosphonate derivatives were qualitatively similar to those of LDPE. At low phosphonate concentrations, the α, β, and γ dispersion regions characteristic of PE were observed, while at concentrations greater than 0.5 pendent groups per 100 carbons atoms, only the β and α relaxations could be discerned. At low degrees of substitution, the temperature of the β relaxation Tβ decreased from that of PE, but above a degree of substitution of 0.1, Tβ increased. This behavior was attributed to the competing influences of steric effects which tend to decrease Tβ and dipolar interactions between the phosphonate groups which increase Tβ. For the phosphonate containing PEO, a new dispersion region designated as the β′ relaxation was observed as a low-temperature shoulder of the β relaxation. The temperature of the β′ loss was consistent with Tg(U) of the PEO oligomers as determined by differential scanning calorimetry, and it is suggested that the β′-loss process results from the relaxation of PEO domains which constitute a discrete phase within the PE matrix.

Notes: Low-density polyethylene was modified by the inclusion of phosphonate ester pendent groups by using an oxidative chlorophosphonylation reaction followed by esterification of the polyethylene poly(phosphonyl chloride) with an alcohol. Two different types of phosphonate esters were prepared: dimethyl phosphonate from the reaction with methanol and a phosphonate graft copolymer from the reaction with hydroxy-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). For the latter, oligomers with molecular weights of 350 and 750 were used. For each type of phosphonate, a series of polymers were prepared with pendent group concentrations ranging from 0 to 9.1 substituents per 100 carbon atoms. The modified polymers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and by measurement of the tensile modulus. Infrared spectroscopy proved to be useful for determining if the polymer modification reaction resulted in entirely phosphonate ester pendent group substitutions or if unesterified phosphonic acid groups were also present. The polymers prepared in this investigation exhibited no infrared absorbances arising from phosphonic acid groups. The presence of phosphonate ester groups resulted in a decrease of crystallinity with increasing phosphonate concentration and with the exception of the polymers containing 9.1 PEO-phosphonate grafts per 100 carbon atoms, the effect of phosphonylation on the melting temperature of the polymers was consistent with Flory's theory for the melting point depression of random copolymers. The tensile modulus measured from a constant uniaxial elongation experiment decreased with increasing phosphonylation. The behavior of all three phosphonate series was identical and could be attributed to the effect of decreasing polymer crystallinity.

Notes: The equilibrium compliance of three low molecular weight polystyrene melts has been determined over the range 15-70°K above Tg from dynamic viscoelastic measurements using alternating shear. Results are favorably compared with the previous results of Plazek and O'Rourke obtained from creep measurements, but agreement with predictions based on the Rouse theory is obtained only in the case of the highest molecular weight sample.

Notes: 300 MHz proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was applied to the determination of triad structures of three poly(alkyl α-chloroacrylates) of widely varying stereoregularities. Assignments and quantitative analyses were made for all of the tetrad peaks in the backbone methylene resonance of poly(methyl α-chloroacrylate), poly(ethyl α-chloroacrylate), and poly(isopropyl α-chloroacrylate). In addition the methyl singlet peaks of poly(methyl α-chloroacrylate), the methyl triplet peaks of poly(ethyl α-chloroacrylate) which had not been amenable previously to resolution at 220 MHz, and the methyl doublet peaks of poly(isopropyl α-chloroacrylate) were resolved, and the triad values which were obtained from these pendant ester group resonances compared favorably with triad values calculated from experimental tetrad values. As a demonstration of the internal agreement of the triad and tetrad peaks assignments, statistical calculations of the stereochemical structures of the actic and syndiotactic polymers were generally described well or to a first approximation by random selection statistics (Bernoullian) while the stereochemical statistics of the moderately to highly isotactic polymers were consistent with a nonrandom statistical process (first-order Markovian), as expected.

Notes: Polybutadiene was successfully metalated by use of tert-butyllithium activated with alkoxides of Group I metals without chain degradation. The metalated polymer was grafted with styrene and 1,3-butadiene to give novel graft copolymers of varying microstructure. This metalating system was found to be highly efficient; however, its catalyst effectiveness is less than that of organolithium-TMEDA metalation agent.

Notes: Chlorodifluoroacetaldehyde has been prepared by lithium aluminum hydride reduction of methyl chlorodifluoroacetate. Purified chlorodifluoroacetaldehyde was polymerized to crystalline, insoluble polychlorodifluoroacetaldehyde or to a mixture of amorphous polymer soluble in organic solvents and insoluble polymer, depending on polymerization conditions and type and amount of initiators. The polymer, particularly the soluble fraction, could be end-capped by acetylation to improve the thermal stability of the initially unstable polymer. The thermal degradation of polymer prepared by various techniques has been studied before and after acetylation and the stability was compared to that of other polyhaloacetaldehydes. Chlorodifluoroacetaldehyde was copolymerized with other haloacetaldehydes and with phenyl isocyanate.

Notes: Bisbenzils have been prepared by nucleophilic aromatic nitro displacement reactions. These materials, some model compounds, and some polyphenylquinoxaline polymers prepared from them were rigorously analyzed by 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The observed chemical shifts were in excellent agreement with calculated values based on model systems. This served as the strongest evidence to support the proposed structures and gave additional intimate structural information on the polyphenylquinoxalines.

Notes: Products from the thermal decomposition of a chlorinated aromatic polyamide fabric are described for conditions of pyrolysis and flaming and nonflaming oxidative degradation. Volatile degradation products were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the condensible fraction, by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), and MS. Nonvolatile char was characterized by IR and elemental analysis. Twenty-one compounds were identified as volatile products from pyrolysis at 550°C; the condensible material contained ammonium chloride and at least 22 organic compounds. From volatile compounds produced in flaming oxidative degradation 21 compounds were identified, of which CO, CO2, and H2O were prominent. Nonflaming oxidative degradation at 400 and 550°C produced 11 and 21 volatile identifiable compounds, respectively, and results from experiments at the higher temperature compared favorably with results from the flaming experiments. By comparison of data from this work with those from unchlorinated analogs (described in an earlier article), it is concluded that the incorporation of chlorine into the polymeric structure lowers the temperature for the onset of thermal degradation and alters the type and concentration of thermolytic products. The major degradation products can be explained by a mechanism similar to that proposed for aromatic polyamides with the exception of the formation of substantial amounts of ammonium chloride. It is proposed that the latter is formed by an initial acid-catalyzed hydrolysis reaction which is followed by deammoniation or by an intermolecular process that involves an isoimide intermediate.

Notes: Polymers of different tacticities, from highly isotactic to highly syndiotactic, were prepared from methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl α-chloroacrylates. These polymers were characterized for tacticity by infrared spectroscopy and 100 and 300 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and for thermal properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). After corrections were made for molecular weight effects, the observed glass temperature-tacticity results were analyzed, and it was determined that the maximum differences in glass temperatures of the purely isotactic compared to the purely syndiotactic polymers should be 92°C for the methyl ester, 86°C for the ethyl ester, and 68°C for the isopropyl ester polymers. The highly isotactic polymers of all three esters were crystalline. Possible polymerization reaction mechanisms are discussed on the basis of the triad and tetrad tacticity values observed and the calculated propagation statistics.
