Notes: The role of the intrinsic viscosity [η] as separation parameter in gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was studied for dextrans (from Leuconostoc mesenteroids B512) dissolved in water with deactivated silicagel (Porasil) as the column-filling material. For that purpose specific viscosities of dextran fractions eluted by GPC were measured as a function of the elution volume v. Provided that the elution volumes are corrected for zonal spreading, they are related to the intrinsic viscosities in an unambiguous way, probably reflecting a unique relationship between degree of branching and molecular weights. This was further investigated by developing an iteration method to prepare two calibration curves γ(v) and g(v), respectively, relating ln[\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\left[ {\bar \eta } \right]$\end {document}] and InM (M is the molecular weight) to v. It required that the weight-average molecular weight Mw, the number-average molecular weight Mn, and the average intrinsic viscosity [\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\left[ {\bar \eta } \right]$\end {document}] for a number of dextran samples (broad distributions) be previously known. The calibration curves found lead to consistent values of the above-mentioned averages. Moreover, they allow-establishment of the [\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\left[ {\bar \eta } \right]$\end {document}]-M relationship over the range 5000 〈 M 〈 500,000.

Notes: Methods for the determination of the number of the number of polytetrahydrofuran branches in neoprene-g-polytetrahydrofuran were examined. Only two suitable methods were found; namely, termination of oxonium ions by triphenylphosphine followed by 31P-NMR and termination with NH4OH—NH4Cl buffer and reaction with fluorescamine followed by fluorescence spectroscopy. Both methods led to the conclusion that Neoprene W has 9 ± 1 active halogens per mole that can be used to initiate tetrahydrofuran polymerization when silver salts are added. Among the methods examined in this study the fluorescence method was the most reliable, most reproducible, fastest, and simplest.

Description: When isolated apical membrane vesicles prepared from cultured A6 epithelia were incubated in vitro with the methyl donor S-adenosylmethionine, the control rate of amiloride-inhibitable sodium transport was doubled. The methylation inhibitors 3-deazaadenosine and S-adenosyl homocysteine returned the S-adenosyl-methionine-stimulated sodium transport to control levels. Neither these agents nor adenosine affected sodium transport into control vesicles. In vesicles incubated with S-adenosyl-[3H-methyl]methionine, both membrane phospholipids and proteins were labeled, and this labeling was inhibited by deazaadenosine. In vesicles prepared from A6 cells treated with aldosterone, sodium transport was twice the control value and S-adenosylmethionine did not cause any further stimulation of transport. In those vesicles, both lipid and protein methylation were increased. These results suggest that methylation, which increases the rate of amiloride-sensitive sodium transport is involved in the action of aldosterone at the apical membrane level in epithelia.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sariban-Sohraby, S -- Burg, M -- Wiesmann, W P -- Chiang, P K -- Johnson, J P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Aug 17;225(4663):745-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6463652" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The universal calibration for gel permeation chromatography (GPC) has been applied to amylose and dextrans. The molecular weight distribution of amylose has been measured starting from known data on dextrans. The agreement found between the molecular weight averages resulting from GPC and those obtained by other methods justifies the procedure followed. The GPC measurements were performed with dimethylsulfoxide as the elution solvent and deactivated silica gel (Porasil) as the column-filling material.

Notes: Polystyrene networks prepared by anionic polymerization have been characterized by small-angle neutron scattering. Two kinds of systems have been examined:(A) networks with labelled branch points allowing characterization of the spatial distribution of crosslinking points; (B) networks containing a low proportion of chains labelled with perdeuterated polystyrene in order to characterize the conformation of individual elastic chains of the polymeric network. The dependence of the results on swelling and uniaxial extension is discussed.

Notes: The behavior of narrow molecular weight distribution polymers has been investigated under uniaxial extension at constant deformation rate and at constant stress. It has been established that up to rupture these polymers behave as linear viscoelastic bodies. A detailed investigation of the rupture phenomenon has shown that the rupture of fluid polymers is due to their transition to the rubbery state at critical deformation rates, with the result that they disintegrate like quasi-cured rubbers. The effect of the temperature and the molecular weight on the critical conditions of rupture has been described in terms of viscoelastic relaxation.

Notes: The photoelectret charge in the aluminum-poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK) conducting-glass (NESA), sandwich cell configuration has been observed to decrease with voltage above some critical voltage, depending on the intensity of illumination. This critical voltage corresponds to the value at which a time-independent photocurrent is observed and also to the “knee-point” voltage in the current voltage plot. The results are explained on the basis of field-assisted detrapping setting in at high field.

Notes: Gelation and melting of aqueous gelatin were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. This phenomenon can be analyzed as a conventional crystallization process assuming predetermined primary nucleation and unidirectional growth. The results were interpreted in terms of the fringed micelle model. Calculated values of the diameter of the renatured collagen fibril were found in excellent agreement with those determined previously by electron microscopy.

Notes: The vibrational analysis of modification I of poly(propyl ethylene), poly(propyl ethylene)-(2,2;d2), and poly(propyl ethylene)-(1,2,2;d3) has been performed using the valence force field derived for poly(ethyl ethylene) and the actual molecular geometry. The band assignments are based on infrared polarization and Raman data.
