Notes: The operation of a twin screw extruder processing a powder or granular solid is reviewed. The operating variables of screw speed and barrel temperature profile interact with a number of design parameters -  screw design, die geometry, feed zone geometry and with the material properties, in determining machine performance. The factors that determine output and pressure development are specified in a sequence of block diagrams. The dynamic response of an operating machine to disturbances in the steady state conditions is explained in the light of the established relationships and interpreted in conventional control theory terms. Attention is drawn to the importance of mixing in the chambers formed by the screw channels and of the residence time distribution in determining the quality of the final product.

Notes: Blends of two characterized linear polyethylenes with a branched polyethylene have been prepared by melt extrusion. It has been found that the linear polyethylenes can be shear modified in a reversible manner similar to branched polymers and that this shear modification and its reversal by re-heating does not change the molecular weight distribution, thereby indicating that the shear modification is a physical rather than chemical change in structure. Because both the high- and low-density polyethylene components of the blends are capable of undergoing reversible shear modification, it is possible to produce blends with either greater or less melt elasticity than the individual components by adjusting the conditions of blending. This demonstrates that the correlation of the properties of blends with the properties of their components should not be attempted without consideration of the effect of the blending process on the properties of the individual components.

Description: When isolated apical membrane vesicles prepared from cultured A6 epithelia were incubated in vitro with the methyl donor S-adenosylmethionine, the control rate of amiloride-inhibitable sodium transport was doubled. The methylation inhibitors 3-deazaadenosine and S-adenosyl homocysteine returned the S-adenosyl-methionine-stimulated sodium transport to control levels. Neither these agents nor adenosine affected sodium transport into control vesicles. In vesicles incubated with S-adenosyl-[3H-methyl]methionine, both membrane phospholipids and proteins were labeled, and this labeling was inhibited by deazaadenosine. In vesicles prepared from A6 cells treated with aldosterone, sodium transport was twice the control value and S-adenosylmethionine did not cause any further stimulation of transport. In those vesicles, both lipid and protein methylation were increased. These results suggest that methylation, which increases the rate of amiloride-sensitive sodium transport is involved in the action of aldosterone at the apical membrane level in epithelia.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sariban-Sohraby, S -- Burg, M -- Wiesmann, W P -- Chiang, P K -- Johnson, J P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Aug 17;225(4663):745-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6463652" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Results are shown from the first set of measurements conducted to validate extinction data from the Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement II (SAM II). Dustsonde-measured number density profiles and lidar-measured backscattering profiles for two days are converted to extinction profiles, and are shown to agree within their respective uncertainties at all heights above the tropopause. Near the tropopause, agreement depends on use of model size distributions with larger particles, having radii greater than 0.6 microns. The presence of such large particles is supported by measurements made elsewhere, is suggested by the in situ size distribution measurements reported, and is likely to have an important bearing on the radiative impact of the total stratospheric aerosol. It is concluded that the SAM II extinction data and uncertainty estimates are supported.

Description: The functions and data gained regarding stratospheric cloud sightings by the stratospheric aerosol measurement (SAM) II experiment on board the Numbus 7 spacecraft are reported. SAM II comprises a single channel sun photometer centered at 1.0 micron wavelength for measuring the solar intensity when the sun descends below an apparent 300 km altitude until the sun is occulted by clouds or the horizon. Readings are also made during sunrise in an opposite fashion. Transmission profiles are developed from the data and used to construct profiles of aerosol extinction with a 1 km resolution. Polar stratospheric clouds have been observed in more than 90% of the cases when the minimum temperature is 185 K or less, and 45% of the time when the temperature is 193 K or less. The clouds were more prevalent in the Antarctic winter than during the Arctic winter, and cloud height was lower than indicated by previous data.

Notes: Aramco vacuum gas oil was catalytically hydrotreated to conversions of 20, 40 and 60%, and subsequently fractionated into naphtha, kerosene, gas oil, and hydrotreated vacuum gas oil. These fractions were thermally cracked to test their potential as feedstock for olefins and BTX production. The olefin yields from the hydrotreated vacuum gas oil obtained from hydrotreating with 40 and 60% conversion favorably compare with those of straight-run naphthas. Cracking in conventional naphtha/atmospheric gas oil units becomes possible. The naphtha, kerosene and gas oil fractions are preferably added to standard refinery streams.
