Notes: Abstract The standard potential of the Zn−Hg (sat)/ZnCl2(M)/AgCl/Ag cell was determined at 25°C using several extrapolation procedures and the value 0.9843 V is proposed for E°. The emf of the Zn−Hg (sat)/ZnCl2(M), salt (M)/AgCl/Ag cell [salt=NaClO4, LiClO4, Mg(ClO4)2, Mg(NO3)2] have been measured at different concentrations of salt. From these data, the mean ionic activity coefficients of ZnCl2 are determined and their variations explained with the aid of Pitzer's treatment. It seems necessary to take into account structure in the ionic cospheres in order to explain the observed variations.

Notes: Summary A kinetic method for determination of traces of Ce(IV), based on the oxidation of sodium 4,8-diamino-1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone-2, 6-disulphonate is described. The reaction is monitored by means of the fluorescence of the oxidation product (λ ex=525nm,λ em=585 nm), and allows determination of 0.02–0.37 ppm Ce(IV). The proposed method has few interferences.

Notes: Abstract This paper studies the effect of harvesting a fraction of a population where the population growth is modelled by a linear age-dependent model, the Von Foerster equation. Two harvesting strategies are considered: the first is where a fraction of the population greater than agec is removed, and the second is where a fraction of the population of age greater thanc but less thanc+n is removed. In the case where the death rate and fertility rate are time independent, the effect of harvesting on the stable age distribution is examined.

Notes: Abstract The volume flow of poly (vinyl chloride) ( $$\bar M_n = 45,000$$ = 45,000,T g = 350 K) has been measured in an Instron Capillary Rheometer. The elastic modulus in longitudinal compression, the longitudinal volume viscosity and initial longitudinal volume viscosity, and retardation times were determined at temperatures both below (324 – 343 K) and above (403 – 453 K) the glass transition temperatureT g , and at compression rates between approximately 10−5 and 200 · 10−5 s−1. An increase in the longitudinal volume viscosity was observed for decreases in the volume deformation, increases in the compression rate and increases in temperature.T g decreased at 0.16 K/MPa. The volume flow activation energy was found to be equal to that for shear flow with a constant value of 91.37 kJ/mol.

Notes: Abstract The thermal decomposition in air of several complexes of chromium(III) with imidazole,N-methylimidazole and 2-methylimidazole has been studied with the aid of differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) in the temperature range 25–600°C. Although the final process of the decomposition gives Cr2O3, there are interesting differences in the complete process of decomposition. The reasons for these differences appear to be related to the trans-effect and to the presence in the imidazole complexes of hydrogen bonds. Enthalpies of the several decomposition reactions have been determined by differential thermal analysis.

Notes: Abstract A magnetohydrodynamical theorem can be deduced for steady axisymmetric magnetized systems in situations which are usually accepted as representative in interstellar plasmas. It shows that for particular conditions detailed below, magnetic fields have either the direction of the symmetry axis of the system or have field lines encircling this axis of symmetry, but intermediate directions are excluded. Ring galaxies are probably of the second type, which would be important in explaining ring patterns. Our galaxy itself would be of this second type slightly separated from steady state, and the magnetic field radial distribution compatible with the gas content is estimated. The implication of this theorem in actual galaxies is difficult to analyze and gives rise to rather speculative discussions.

Notes: Abstract A generalization of the “Gauge-invariant OPE model” to double pion photoproduction on3He is presented. Results for the total and differential cross-sections are shown. The relevance of double pion photoproduction in the nuclear shadowing of photons is remarked.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we discuss the exponential law for proton decay. By using a simple model based uponSU(5)GUT and the current theories of hadron structure, we explicitly show that the corrections to the Wigner-Weisskopf approximation are quite negligible for present day protons, so that their eventual decay should follow the exponential law. Previous works are critically analyzed.
