Notes: Abstract The charged hyperon beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) has been used to collect data on semileptonic decays ofΣ −,Ξ − andΛ. A magnetic channel selects 100 GeV/c negatively charged particles produced in the forward direction by interaction of the 200 GeV/c SPS proton beam on a BeO target. TheΣ − andΞ − hyperons are concurrently identified in a DISC Čerenkov counter, and their decay products are analysed by a magnetic spectrometer. Electron-hadron discrimination is achieved by the combined use of lead-glass and lead/scintillator counters, transition radiation detectors, and a Čerenkov counter. In this article we report results on the $$\Sigma ^ - \to \Lambda e^ - \bar v$$ decay mode. Measurements of the Λ polarization and of the centre-of-mass distributions (baryon kinetic energy, electron-neutrino correlation, and Dalitz plot distributions) yield the vector to axialvector form factor ratiof 1/g 1=+0.034±0.080, in agreement with the value expected from the conserved vector current hypothesis (f 1/g 1=0). TheΣ −→Λe − v→ branching ratio measurement gives a value of (5.41±0.30)×10−5. The effects of radiative corrections are not included in these results. They are discussed in the text. Results on the otherΞ −,Σ −, andΛ semileptonic decays are reported in separate articles.

Notes: Abstract Results on five different hyperon semileptonic decays from the WA2 experiment, performed in the CERN SPS charged hyperon beam, have been analysed within the framework of the Cabibbo model. For the first time, the inconsistencies, which inevitably occur when the results from different experiments are combined, have been avoided in these comprehensive fits to high statistics data from a single hyperon decay experiment. Excellent agreement with the basic Cabibbo model has been obtained using the WA2 data either alone or together with neutron lifetime measurements. These results contrast strongly with other recent Cabibbo analyses which have indicated the presence ofSU(3) breaking effects. Including radiative corrections we have obtained the results,F=0.477±0.012,D=0.756±0.011 and sinθ c =0.231±0.003. The ratio (D/D+F) is 0.613±0.009, which is close to theSU(6) prediction of 3/5. Using additional information onft values for superallowed nuclear Fermi transitions, an upper limit on the mixing parameter sinθ3 in the Kobayashi-Maskawa six quark scheme has been obtained: |sinθ3|〈0.20.

Notes: Summary The responses of a population of Oystercatchers to their own depletion of their prey, the edible cockle Cerastoderma edule, have been examined in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland., Cockle stocks were severely depleted each winter as a result of predation by Oystercatchers and about half the birds present in October in the main study area had left by March: the reduction was greater when the initial population of Oystercatchers was high than when it was low. Oystercatchers were initially widespread around the Lough but tended to aggregate by January into a few good sites. Within each site annual differences in the location of feeding effort were correlated with year to year variation in the location of second winter cockles. Within the feeding areas in a bay the birds apparently hunted in the short-term on the basis of expectation, ceasing to crop, the densest cockle beds once an average yield for the area has been removed; this yield was apparently estimated from the local density of the anvils on which captured cockles were broken open. This effect led to marginal areas being depleted of cockles more rapidly than high density areas, so that the birds gradually concentrated their hunting onto an increasingly restricted area of the bay. The birds initially took only second winter and larger cockles but by late winter cockle densities had fallen so much that smaller cockles were accepted: areas previously abandoned or unused for hunting were then economically viable because of the reduced expectations of the birds and were incorporated into the feeding areas. These results are seen as consistent with Royama's profitability theory.

Notes: Summary This paper examines the reproductive cycles of three ecologically important marine bivalves-Modiolus modiolus (L.), Cerastoderma edule (L.), and Mytilus edulis L. in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland over a period of almost five years. Whilst Modiolus does not appear to become sexually mature until it is several years old, Mytilus and Cerastoderma can reproduce in their first and second years of life respectively. In Cerastoderma and Modiolus sexual maturity is preceded by a period of rapid somatic growth. The subtidal Modiolus population remained in a more or less fully ripe condition virtually throughout the period of this investigation suggesting that this particular population lacked any marked cyclical reproductive activity. We interpret this as evidence of slow but almost continuous release of gametes throughout much of the year, a suggestion which is supported by recruitment data. A small intertidal population of Modiolus in Belfast Lough monitored over a period of two years exhibited a much more seasonal cycle. Here spawning occurred mainly during the autumn and winter. These data suggest that localised environmental factors are exceedingly important in controlling the annual reproductive cycle of this species. Cerastoderma from the mid-tidal sand flats ripened rapidly during the spring and spawned over a relatively restricted period in the summer. In Strangford Lough Mytilus occurs predominantly in the low-shore and while it spawns mainly in the spring and summer the annual cycle is considerably more protracted and variable than in Cerastoderma. Variations in the duration of the spawning periods in these bivalves can perhaps be explained in terms of both environmental stability and the immediate physical conditions experienced by these particular populations. The reproductive strategies exhibited by Cerastoderma, Modiolus, and Mytilus in Strangford Lough are considered in relation to population stability and to the different patterns of mortality which characterise these species in their respective local habitats.

Notes: Abstract In maize (Zea mays L.) and pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings, cellulose microfibril impressions are present on freeze-fractured plasma membranes. It has been proposed that impressions of newly synthesized microfibrils are a record of the movement of terminal synthesizing complexes through the plasma membrane (Mueller and Brown, 1980, J. Cell Biol. 84, 315–326). The association of terminal complexes with the ends of microfibril impressions or with the ends of microfibrils torn through the membrane indicates the orientation of microfibril tips. Unidirectionally-oriented microfibril tips (all pointing in the same direction) are associated with the organized deposition of parallel arrays of microfibrils. Multidirectionally-oriented microfibril tips were observed in a cell in which microfibril deposition was unusually disorganized. Microfibril patterns around pit fields are asymmetric and resemble flow patterns. Unidirectionally-oriented tears are associated with these microfibrils. Although microfibril orientations are deflected around pit fields, the main axis of microfibril orientation is maintained across the surface of the cell. The hypothesis is proposed that the interaction of a flowing plasma membrane with microfibril synthesizing complexes in the plane of the membrane may result in unidirectional deposition and asymmetric microfibril impressions around pit fields.
