Notes: Summary An area of significant seismic quiescence is found near Oaxaca, southern Mexico. The anomalous area may be the site of a future large earthquake as many cases so far reported were. This conjecture is justified by study of past seismicity changes in the Oaxaca region. An interval of reduced seismicity, followed by a renewal of activity, preceded both the recent large events of 1965 and 1968. Those past earthquakes have ruptured the eastern and western portions of the present seismicity gap, respectively, so that the central part remaining is considered to be of the highest risk of the pending earthquake. The most probable estimates are: 7 1/2±1/4 for the magnitude and ϕ=16.5°±0.5°N, λ=96.5°±0.5W for the epicenter location. A firm prediction of the occurrence time is not attempted. However, a resumption of seismic activity in the Oaxaca region may precede a main shock.

Notes: Summary A study was performed in 6 healthy volunteers to determine whether 50 mg intramuscular doses of meptazinol repeated four hourly for 24 h would lead to accumulation of the drug. The first dose of meptazinol was rapidly absorbed with a subsequent mean (± SD) elimination half-life of 1.6±0.33 h. This value was unaffected by the administration of intermediate doses. There was no significant accumulation of the drug; 95% of the steady-state plasma concentration was achieved after a mean (± SD) of 1.9±0.39 and 99% after a mean (± SD) of 2.9±0.63 doses. These findings are consistent with the theoretical prediction for a rapidly absorbed drug with a plasma elimination half-life of 1.6 h. No clinically relevant changes were seen in pulse blood pressure, haematological or biochemical screens. Reported side effects were of a subjective and minor nature.

Notes: Abstract Brief and impulsive signals of uncertain origin appear regularly on records from Ocean Bottom Seismographs (OBS) of several institutions. These signals have been recorded on nearly all deployments of the Texas OBS, including sites at depths greater than 7000 m. At some sites, they account for over 90% of the events recorded. They are of short duration (usually 0.5–4.0 s) and have a characteristic frequency (usually in the range of 4–18 Hz) that differs from site to site. When networks of OBS instruments are deployed, the signals are not recorded simultaneously by different instruments. Neither the frequency content nor the distribution of durations of these signals is similar to what is observed for known earthquake events. We present evidence suggesting that the signals are of biological origin, perhaps caused by animals touching the OBS units. (1) The distribution of these signals on instruments deployed at depths shallower than 1000 m shows a 24 h periodicity, while there is a 24 h periodic pattern on instruments deployed at sites deeper than 1000 m (where there is no visible light). (2) The frequency of occurrence of signals is similar to the vertical distribution of biomass in the oceans, i.e., they appear most frequently on OBS instruments deployed at very shallow depths. (3) Biological material has been found attached to several OBS units upon recovery.

Notes: Abstract Data relevant to the shallow structure of the Moon obtained at the Apollo seismic stations are compared with previously published results of the active seismic experiments. It is concluded that the lunar surface is covered by a layer of low seismic velocity (V p ≃ 100 m s−1), which appears to be equivalent to the lunar regolith defined previously by geological observations. This layer is underlain by a zone of distinctly higher seismic velocity at all of the Apollo landing sites. The regolith thicknesses at the Apollo 11, 12, and 15 sites are estimated from the shear-wave resonance to be 4.4, 3.7, and 4.4 m, respectively. These thicknesses and those determined at the other Apollo sites by the active seismic experiments appear to be correlated with the age determinations and the abundances of extralunar components at the sites.

Notes: Abstract Three alloantigens encoded by Ly-6-linked genes are defined by monoclonal antibodies. The Ly-27.2 antigen is defined by antibody 5075-19.1, Ly-28.2 by 5075-3.6, -12.1, -16.10 and by 5095-16.6. The strain distribution pattern of these antibodies is the same and identical with Ly-6.2. However the tissue distribution of these antigens is unique and distinguishes these antigens from the Ly-6.2 antigen or any known antigen encoded by Ly-6-linked genes. Ly-27.2 is present on all thymocytes, T cells, and B cells but is absent from bone marrow cells, whereas Ly-28.2 is absent from most thymocytes and is present on a subpopulation of T cells and B cells but is found on 60–70% of bone marrow cells. No recombination between the Ly-6/Ly-27/Ly-28 loci was found in linkage studies using 41 recombinant inbred strains and 57 backcross mice and indicates very close linkage of these genes. In addition, close linkage to 24 minor histocompatibility genes was excluded using the Bailey HW bilineal congenic mice. The data presented indicate that either the Ly-6 complex is composed of a family of tightly linked genes or the antigens are the products of a single gene that undergoes extensive modification during differentiation.

Notes: Abstract Evidence obtained using recombinant inbred and congenic mouse strains has shown that thePC8 locus responsible for determining a marker on a singlek chain in inbred mice is linked to theLy-2,3 locus on chromosome 6. The upper limit of the map distance between these loci is approximately three centimorgans. This finding is discussed in relation to other known light-chain variants that are associated with theLy-2,3 locus.

Notes: Abstract Cross-reactions among carbonic anhydrases (CAs) I, II, and III were studied using a variety of antisera: (1) a rabbit antiserum to bovine CA III, (2) mouse antisera to human CA I, CA II, and CA III; and (3) five monoclonal antibodies prepared by the hybridoma technique using splenocytes from a mouse immunized with human CAs I and II and bovine CA III. Cross-reactions between CAs were readily found by binding assays using these antisera. Human CA I, but not human CA II, inhibited the reaction of the rabbit anti-CA III with its homologous antigen. Mouse antisera to CA I or CA II bound the homologous I or II with nearly as great efficiency as the autologous isozyme and sometimes weakly bound CA III. Mouse antisera to CA III frequently bound CA I or II. These cross-reactions were confirmed by the first use of hybridoma-prepared, monoclonal antibodies to CAs. The mouse monoclonal antibodies to CA isozymes varied in the amount of cross-reactivity among I, II, and III: at one extreme, one monoclonal was highly specific for the autologous CA III; at the other extreme, one monoclonal weakly reacted with some examples of CAs I, II, and III.

Notes: Abstract Details are given of the field electron emission (FEE) characteristics of a cold cathode consisting of a multi-array of tantalum carbide needles prepared from a directionally solidified eutectic. It is shown that, whilst these needles have similar dimensions, only a small fraction of these potential sources actually contribute to the total emission current. From electron spectroscopy studies it has been established that the characteristic half-width of the emission from individual areas is about ~ 260 meV and that the emission mechanism is based on a semiconductor regime. The Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) plots of the total emission from the cathode and that from small emitter areas are both linear over a wide field range.

Notes: Abstract The control of biped locomotion is investigated by computer simulation of a simple model of a biped. A method of control is suggested which attempts to ensure that the motion of the biped resembles human locomotion, even in the presence of large disturbances. The results of computer simulations performed using the suggested control scheme are described. These simulations confirm that the suggested control scheme achieves the aim of approximating human locomotion.
