Notes: Abstract The effects of hydrogen bonding on the geometry of the carboxyl group have been studied systematically based on accurate X-ray crystallographic data. In general, the C-O(H) bond length increases with increasing O ⋯ O hydrogen-bond length, while the C=O bond length decreases. These variations become less pronounced for longer O ⋯ O distances. The O=C-O(H) and C-C-O(H) angles decrease with increasing O ⋯ O separation, while the C-C=O angle increases. The sum of the three angles remains close to 360 °, testifying to the planarity of the carboxyl group. These correlations are not observed to hold for cyclic hydrogen-bonded dimers, indicating that a continuous variation in the degree of disorder of the protons may be present, ranging from the ordered case with easily distinguishable C=O and C-O(H), to the 50%-50% disordered case, where the two C-O distances become equal.

Notes: Abstract The distance between two equilibrium proton sites in symmetric OHO bonds and its isotopic variation, determined from precise neutron-diffraction data, has been compared with the predicted values which were derived previously by the author using correlation curves in hydrogen-bond parameters. It is shown that a fairly good agreement was obtained between the observed and the predicted values, indicating the validity of the empirical relations.

Notes: Abstract A positive electrode containing 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-quinone (DDQ) as the cathode active material was discharged in a magnesium seawater cell at room temperature. Analysis of the dissolved species of DDQ in water and potential sweep voltammetry studies were also carried out. The open circuit voltage of the DDQ-Mg cell was as high as 2.2 V and the single cell could be discharged at current densities greater than 50 mA cm−2. However, the current efficiencies for the DDQ cathodes in a three-cell immersion-type battery were not high enough for high drain applications, probably due to a high leak current through the common electrolyte.

Notes: Summary Corticotropin1–24 and [Gly1]corticotropin1–18 amide increased the fluorescence of 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonate which bound to the bovine adrenocortical membranes. The two ACTH fragments interacted with the protein of the membranes and increased the net positive charge of the membranes.

Notes: Summary This study presents measurements of serum vitamin D metabolites, calcium and phosphorus as well as measurements of the equilibrium dissociation constant for duodenal 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor in 15-, 18-, 19-, and 20-day chick embryos in comparison to that in 1- and 118-day-old chicks and to vitamin D-deficient chicks. The present results showed that: (a) serum 1,25(OH)2D and 24,25(OH)2D levels rise from 15 and 18 to days 19 and 20 of embryonic development while serum phosphate levels are stable; (b) serum calcium levels rise at hatching to adult levels; (c) the duodenal 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor is detectable in 15-day-old embryo and has a Kd similar to that of 118-day-old vitamin D-replete chicks; and (d) the activity of 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor in chick duodenal cytosol is maximal at hatching.

Notes: Abstract Thermal annealing and light irradiation effects on hole and electron drift mobilities were studied for amorphous Se93.5As6.5 and Se94.3Ge5.7 films by means of a time-of-flight technique. The electron drift mobility and its activation energy show a drastic increase after the heat and light treatments, while the hole drift mobility remains almost unchanged. The change of electron transport is attributed to a relaxation of local structural distortion, which is correlated with relatively shallow localized states. The present experimental results are inconsistent with the prior proposal that electron transport in amorphous selenides is correlated with Se8 ring molecules.

Notes: Summary Sodium chloride at concentrations below 0.5 M, enhanced the respiratory activity (O2-consumption) ofStaphylococcus aureus under endogenous and sugar-supported conditions, but did not overcome the inhibitory action of sodium azide. Several sugars, including the glucose analoguea-methylglucoside, and their metabolites enhanced bacterial O2-consumption, but acetylmethylcarbinol was ineffective.

Notes: Summary Upon injection of β-phenylethylamine (PEA) into the subconjunctival space of rabbit, intraocular pressure increased. This effect went parallel with the amount of PEA transferred into the anterior chamber, which indicates that intraocular pressure was elevated by direct action of PEA.

Notes: Summary The case of a 5-month-old male infant with 18p- mosaic, who has intractable seizures and severe ophthalmological abnormalities in addition to many clinical manifestations usually described in the 18p- syndrome, is reported. The proportions of abnormal cells are 7–8% in blood and 55% in skin. About 35% of the short arm of chromosome 18 is deleted. To our knowledge the present report is the fifth one of 18p- mosaic. The main interest of this case resides in the fact that it shows a serious clinical picture despite the low proportion of abnormal cells in blood and the small degree of deletion of the short arm of chromosome 18.
