Notes: Summary The method of utilizing the principles of carbonate equilibrium chemistry to monitor the rate of inorganic carbon uptake by a variety of algal species is presented and discussed. The usefulness of this technique is demonstrated for both batch and chemostat algal culture. Data obtained from carbon limited batch and chemostat cultures suggest that the specific growth rate of a variety of algal species may best be represented as a Monod response to the free carbon dioxide concentration. The monitoring of carbonate equilibrium in the batch method provides a simple, rapid and inexpensive technique for obtaining rates of algal carbon fixation. This technique is well suited for obtaining the large volumes of detailed kinetic data necessary in building a basis for understanding the factors involved in algal productivity and algae species shifts, in both controlled and natural aquatic ecosystems.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Partielle Hydrolyse von Blei(II) Chlorid durch Spuren von Wasser führt zum Auftreten eines zusätzlichen DTA-Effekts beim Schmelzen des Eutektikums PbCl2-PbO nach mehrfachem Aufheizen und Abkühlen.
Notes: Abstract The hydrolysis of lead chloride by residual water is responsible for the appearance of a second peak in the DTA curve, due to melting of the eutectic PbCl2-PbO in repeated measurement runs on the same sample. This effect has previously been misinterpreted as a solid-solid transition in pure PbCl2.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on rats showed that thermal radiation causes a much sharper increase in the subcutaneous temperature in an area of skin separated from the underlying tissues by a layer of felt than in an area of skin separated from surrounding and underlying tissues and immediately resutured in situ, or an area of intact skin. In the authors' opinion the results indicate that the blood flow does not play an essential role in the removal of heat from the skin following its exposure to radiant heat. The ability of the underlying tissues to conduct and accumulate heat is much more important.

Notes: Summary A method is described which makes it possible to with-draw in a defined way headspace gas samples amounting to as much as several tens of milliliters from an equilibrated gas-liquid system. The apparatus consists of an equilibration vessel provided with a septum through which a Tenax GC-packed trap can be connected with the headspace compartment via an injection needle. At the bottom of the vessel, a syringe is situated by means of which a liquid sample is introduced into the vessel. A portion of liquid sample is introduced into the equilibration vessel, equilibrium is established, a certain volume of the headspace gas is pushed out through the trap by introducing another portion of liquid sample, and the analytes entrapped are determined by GC. Then the entire procedure is repeated, and the initial contents of the analytes in the liquid sample are calculated from the two GC analyses. The possibilities and reliability of the method are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The method and experiences with the determination of oxygen Stoichiometry in mixed manganesechromium sesquioxides are described. The decomposition is carried out in sealed glass tubes in hydrochloric acid in presence of a ferro-ferric system. The oxydation state of the analysed materials is determined by titration of Fe2+ ions with a solution of cerium salt, ferroin being used as indicator.
