    Notizen: The valence-shell vertical ionization potentials of Cl2 were calculated by perturbation corrections to the Koopmans theorem using a traditional effective core potential based on a Phillips-Kleinman derivation and an improved effective core potential obtained by Christiansen, Lee, and Pitzer. Comparison of the results with an all-electron calculation demonstrated the reliability of the Christiansen-Lee-Pitzer effective core potential, which was then used to compute the vertical ionization potentials of ClN3 and ClNCO. The results shed new light in the interpretation of the photoelectron spectra of these molecules.

    Notizen: Aromatic heterocyclic polymers are exceedingly attractive high performance materials because of their unusually high mechanical strength, chemical resistance and thermal stability, but are very difficult to process unless “swivel” atoms or groups are inserted along the chains to increase conformational flexibility. The present theoretical investigation employs the CNDO/2 method with direct geometry optimization to calculate such flexibility for the wholly aromatic swivels biphenyl, 2,2′-bipyridyl, 2-phenylpyridine, 2,2′-bipyrimidyl, and 2-phenylpyrimidine. The most important result is the prediction that both flexibility and accessibility of coplanar conformations should increase significantly with the number of ortho-CH groups replaced by N-atoms. The calculations also provide information on other conformation-dependent properties such as optimized geometries, charge distributions, and dipole moments, and these results are found to be in satisfactory agreement with the results of previous theoretical and experimental studies. Finally, since these chains are soluble only in strongly acidic media, the species mono- and diprotonated 2,2′-bipyridyl, 2,2′-bipyridyl · H3O+, and 2,2′-bipyrimidyl · 2H2O were also investigated with regard to some of these conformational characteristics.

    Notizen: This review focuses on a new type of para-catenated aromatic polymer being used in the preparation of high-performance films and fibers of exceptional strength, thermal stability, and environmental resistance, including inertness to essentially all common solvents. Polymers of this type include cis and transpoly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO), and the cis and trans forms of the corresponding poly(p-phenylene benzobis-thiazole)(PBT). The purpose of this paper is to summarize the authors' theoretical work on the structures, conformational energies, intermolecular interactions, and electronic properties of PBO and PBT chains, including the protonated forms known to exist in strong acids. The emphasis is on how such studies provide a molecular understanding of the unusual properties and processing characteristics of this new class of materials.

    Notizen: An in vitro method has been developed for screening of candidate biomaterials in an early phase of their development. The test is based on L-929 mouse fibroblast cultures and their response to powdered polymer samples. It applies microscopic observation for the detection of morphological changes, uses dye exclusion testing for cell viability determination, and utilizes estimation of population doublings as an end point. The test is shown to be reliable and reproducible and is compared to in vivo implantation studies in rats, previously reported.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: It is well known that molecular weights and cosurfaces of molecules spread in a mono-molecular film can be obtained from surface pressure measurements. The present authors have tried to establish an accurate relationship between specific cosurfaces and linear dimensions of the molecules. It has been shown that in the case of two proteins of high dissymetry, gliadin and zein, a linear relation exists between specific cosurface and molecular weight. By combining surface pressure data with molecular density data it was possible to calculate the axial ratio. Results were in good agreement with those given by other methods.
    Notizen: Il est bien connu que l'on peut obtenir au départ de mesures de la pression superficielle les poids moléculaires et les cosurfaces des molécules étalées sous forme d'un film mono-moléculaire. Nous avons essayé d'établir une rélation étroite entre les cosurfaces spécifiques et les dimensions linéaires des molécules. On montre ainsi que dans le cas de deux protéines à dissymétrie élevée, la gliadine et la zéine, il existe une relation linéaire entre les cosurfaces spécifiques et le poids moléculaire. En combinant les résultats de la pression superficielle à ceux de la densité moléculaire il est possible de calculer le rapport des axes. Les résultats sont en bon accord avec ceux indiqués par d'autres méthodes.
