Notes: The exoerythrocytic forms of Plasmodium gallinaceum in thin sections of infected tissue cultures have been examined with the electron microscope. It was seen that important changes occur in the fine structure of the parasite during the various phases of the cycle. The cytoplasm of the merozoites at the beginning and at the end of each cycle shows a great electron density due to a fine granulation. Larger granules are found at one pole of the parasite. The merozoites have a large nucleus in the center, and an oval body of great electron density at one pole, the significance of which is unknown. Short canaliculi can also be seen in the cytoplasm, but no mitochondria have been found. The cytoplasm of the schizonts shows a low electron density. It contains small particles scattered irregularly throughout its whole mass. The nuclei are not well defined; the oval body observed in the merozoites apparently has disappeared. Short canaliculi are present everywhere; however, mitochondria could not be identified with certainty. In the final phase of the cycle, in the rosette formations, the cytoplasm assumes again the fine granular structure. The future merozoites are grouped around a cytoplasmic core, with which they are directly connected. The whole segmenter is situated in a vacuole formation. In cross sections of the merozoites an opening in the central pole has been observed.

Notes: In order to study the blepharoplast-kinetoplast region in the adult form of Schizotrypanum cruzi thin sections of this form, obtained in tissue cultures, have been examined with the electron microscope. It has been seen that the kinetoplast is contained in a large spherical, vacuole-like space, in hich its osmiophilic mass is more dispersed than in the leishmania and crithidia forms, where it is contained in a rectangular, almost linear space. The basal body of the flagellum has been found at the margin of the vacuole, although separated from it. A group of striae in parallel array has been found with regularity in all the trypanosome forms, similar to the structures of the parabasal body in other protozoa, or to the Golgi apparatus of metazoan cells. The significance of this structure for the parasite is discussed.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. In an electron microscopic study, counts of peripheral microtubules were made in spheromastigotes and trypomastigotes in tissue cultures of embryonic heart muscle cells. In interphase spheromastigotes there were, at the level of the nucleus, ∼ 114 microtubules; in dividing forms, there were ∼ 222. In trypomastigotes, the number of microtubules varied according to the level of the section—there were fewer than 40 tubules in the pointed ends of an organism, while in the central segment the number of these elements ranged from 60 to 115. The highest number of microtubules was found in the region containing the Golgi complex. The distance between the microtubules was constant, equalling 44 nm, even at the pointed ends of a trypanosome. This suggests that the microtubules course parallel to one another. Cross sections and randomly arranged, variable length, longitudinal sections of the tubules were noted around the kinetosomes in dividing organisms.

Notes: Neutral lipids, particularly triglycerides, accounted for the major decrease in the total lipid content in Paramecium cells that occurs with culture age. Sterols, triglycerides, and steryl esters were the major classes of neutral lipids in cells and isolated cilia. Free as well as high concentrations of esterified sterols were detected in purified ciliary membrane preparations. Stigmasterol and 7-dehydrostigmasterol were the major components of both free and esterified sterols of cells and cilia; however, when cholesterol was present in the growth medium, it was desaturated to 7-dehydrocholesterol and incorporated into cellular and ciliary lipids. Free fatty acids from cells and triglycerides from cells and cilia were low in polyunsaturated fatty acids and reflected the composition of fatty acids in the culture medium. An exception was the reduced concentration of stearate in triglycerides from whole cells. Greater than 50% of triglyceride fatty acids from cilia were saturated. The fatty acid compositions of cellular triglycerides and ciliary steryl esters did not change with culture age, but those of cellular steryl esters and ciliary triglycerides did change. In comparison with phospholipids, these neutral lipid fatty acid compositional changes were smaller. The sensitivity of these stigmasterol-containing cells to polyene antibiotics indicated that they were killed by nystatin 〉 filipin 〉 amphotericin B. The unexpected finding of high concentrations of steryl esters in ciliary membrane preparations is discussed.

Notes: Empirical Research about management of innovation has mainly been limited to the Anglo-Saxon world. In this paper the author reports on a pilot study, which is part of a larger project, in ten small and medium-sized Belgian companies, all of them active in rather mature industries. The study concerned aspects of idea generation, problem-solving, project selection, and some organizational aspects of the innovation process. An interesting hypothesis resulting from this study is that innovation is mainly an incremental process along a natural trajectory characteristic for the subindustry to which the company belongs, and that the selection process is for the majority of these companies only a minor problem.

Notes: The recent interest in the disposal of treated sewage effluent by deep-well injection into salt-water-filled aquifers has increased the need for proper disposal of salt water as more wells are drilled and tested each year. The effects on an unconfined aquifer of the improper disposal of salt water associated with the construction of three wells in southeastern Florida emphasize this need. In two of the wells provisions to prevent and detect salt-water contamination of the unconfined aquifer were practically nonexistent, and in one well extensive provisions were made. Of the three drilling sites the one with proper provision for detection presented no serious problem, as the ground water contaminated by the salt water was easily located and removed. The provisions consisted of drilling a brine-injection well to dispose of salt water discharged in drilling and testing operations, using a closed drilling circulation system to reduce spillage, installing shallow observation wells to map the extent and depth of any salt-water contamination of the shallow aquifer, and installing a dewatering system to remove contaminated ground water.

Notes: : Information on biologically important physical and chemical variables is presented for Lake Oconee, a newly impounded pumped storage reservoir in Georgia. During its first summer, when no pumping occurred, temperature, oxygen, pH, inorganic nitrogen, and phosphorus were vertically stratified with severe hypolimnetic oxygen depletion. During the second summer, when pumped storage was in operation, more homogenous vertical profiles, generally higher oxygen, and lower dissolved nutrient concentrations were observed. These pumped storage effects were observed at all stations, rather than being confined to the immediate vicinity of the dam.
