Notes: The m/e 226 peak in the mass spectrum of 1,1-dimethyl-2,2-dibenzoylhydrazine is formed by loss of C2H4N from the molecular ion, a process involving concerted transfer of two hydrogen atoms from the same methyl group as an accompaniment to N—N bond fission.

Notes: The apperrance of peaks at non-integral masses in linked scans, where the ratio B/E is kept constant, is shown to be caused by fragmentations of metastable ions occuring in the region between the magnetic and electric sectors. A formula is given for calculating the mass of the parent metastable ion and that of its daughter ion.

Notes: Proton NMR spectra are reported for 15N enriched borazine and a series of 15N enriched derivatives: N-methyl-borazine, N,N′-dimethylborazine and a new photochemical product, 1-methyl-2-aminoborazine. Chemical shifts for the ring (15N—H) protons have been measured. Using a Fourier transform spectrometer, fine structure in the 15N—H doublet is resolved. Ortho and meta ring proton and three-bond 15N to H coupling constants have been determined. Substituent effects on chemical shifts and coupling constants for borazine derivatives are compared with those for analogous benzene derivatives.

Notes: The mass spectra of C-alkylaziridines show that generally β-cleavage is the most important fragmentation, although α-cleavages also occur as do γ-, and δ- and ∊-cleavages in appropriate examples. A surprising rearrangement of the β-cleavage ions has been explained as the result of a four-centre cyclization followed by fragmentation. Other decompositions occur via transannular cleavages with and without hydrogen transfer. α-Cleavage appears to be the most important fragmentation of N-alkylaziridines. N-Phenylaziridine shows very marked 1,2-phenyl-migration before fragmentation.

Notes: The use of secondary targets with commercially available high power X-ray spectroscopy tubes has been investigated as a means of providing an excitation source for X-ray energy spectroscopy. A comparison has been made between the secondary target mode of excitation and the use of the tube directly. Results from this comparison show the superiority of the secondary target technique. Examples of analysis using the secondary target excitation are given to illustrate the high data rates and low background this technique has to offer.

Description: The effect of a preload cycle on the structural performance of three graphite/epoxy composite laminates was studied. The layups studied were a laminate typical of general purpose structures (L1), a laminate representative of a filament wound tank (L2), and a laminate representative of turboengine fan blades. The effects of three sizes of simulated initial defects were studied. The tests developed static strength data, fatigue to failure data, and residual static data after application of a predetermined number of fatigue cycles. For L1 specimens, there was a slight trend for the static strength to be greater for preloaded specimens. After application of cyclic loading, however, the influence of preloading was insignificant. In L2 and L3 specimens there was no consistent difference in the static or fatigue results between preloaded and nonpreloaded specimens.

Description: This paper presents the results of a program investigating the effects of initial defects on the fatigue and fracture response of composite laminates. The structural laminates investigated were a typical angle-ply laminate, a polar/hoop-wound pressure vessel laminate, and a typical engine fan blade laminate. Defects investigated were full- and half-penetration circular holes, full- and half-penetration slits, and countersink holes. Results are presented showing the effects of the defect size and type on the static fracture strength, fatigue performance, and residual static strength. The results of inspection procedures are shown, describing the effect of cyclic and static loadings on damage propagation in composite laminates. The data in this study were used to define proof test levels as a qualification procedure in composite structure subjected to cyclic loading.
