Notes: Summary Two methods of deriving linear selection indices for non-linear profit functions have been proposed. One is by linear approximation of profit, and another is the graphical method of Moav and Hill (1966). When profit is defined as the function of population means, the graphical method is optimal. In this paper, profit is defined as the function of the phenotypic values of individual animals; it is then shown that the graphical method is not generally optimal. We propose new methods for constructing selection indices. First, a numerical method equivalent to the graphical method is proposed. Furthermore, we propose two other methods using quadratic approximation of profit: one is based on Taylor series about means before selection, and the other is based on Tayler series about means after selection. Among these different methods, it is shown that the method using quadratic approximation based on Taylor series about means after selection is the most efficient.

Notes: Summary A selection index which maximizes genetic gains in a desired direction has been previously suggested. We extend this index to the case where desired relative genetic gains are constrained to be not less or not greater than pre-specified levels. Further, we suggest an index for desired relative genetic gains constrained to be between certain levels. All these indices are obtained using quadratic programming techniques.

Notes: Summary Parametric relationships between the genotype x environment interaction and the genetic correlation of the same attribute measured in two different environments are derived. It is shown that the criticism by Fernando et al. (1984) of Yamada's method (1962) in the case of unbalanced data is irrelevant.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A differential pulse polarographic determination of nickel(II) in the lower ppb region is possible by the addition of a dithiocarbamate, N-(dithiocarboxy)sarcosine, which forms water-soluble complexes with metal ions. An enhanced reduction current, due to adsorption of the complex, is obtained in an electrolysis solution composed of 0.1 M KCl and 0.015 M (NH4)2oxalate/0.02 M NaOH buffer in the presence of dithiocarbamate. The nickel(II) content in standard reference materials was accurately determined after separation of Fe(III) and Zn(II) by an anion-exchange technique. 0.89 and 1.36 (1.39) μg/g have been recovered from the certified values of 1.03 and 1.3 μg/g, respectively.
1,3 μg/g konnten 0,89 bzw. 1,36 (1,39) μg/g wiedergefunden werden.

Notes: Abstract The cloning vector pME290 (6.8 kb), which is derived from thePseudomonas plasmid pVS1 and has about 7 copies, was mutagenized in vitro to provide derivatives with altered copy numbers. Thus, pME292 (about 1–3 copies) and pME294 (about 15–20 copies) were isolated. These vectors were used in the characterization of theP. aeruginosa argF gene encoding ornithine carbamoyltransferase.

Notes: Abstract A low-power tunable quasi-optical gyrotron was designed for driving free electron laser amplifiers in the frequency ránge of 220–270 GHz. The gyrotron cavity consisted of a spherical mirror and a plane slotted mirror to produce a Gaussian radiation output beam. Output powers of 1–10 kW were obtained in the 4 cm length cavity by a few amperes of electron beams with a voltage of 30 kV.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes an experimental study of a quasi-optical cavity to be used in qyrotrons. The cavity configuration was designed so that its output wave could pass into a quasi-optical transmission line. The test cavity was coaxially composed of a pair of annular mirrors, one of which was a curved conical mirror and the other was a plane mirror having a radial slot array for wave output. A mode excited in the cavity at 56.4 GHz was observed by detecting the radiation wave that leaked out through the slotted mirror. It was shown that the present slotted mirror served as a partially and uniformly transparent mirror to radiate the output wave with the same mode as in the cavity.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is carried out with a profile of hollow Gaussian radiation beam propagating in an optical system composed of coaxial annular curved mirrors. The result will be a useful tool in designing an axisymmetric quasi-optical gyrotron oscillator (ASQUOTRON).

Notes: Abstract The measurements of electrical properties and X-ray structural analysis were made for sintered composite materials prepared by mixing the powders of the ceramic superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) and the powders of the pure metal element M with with M = Ni, Cu and Ag at 50 vol% proportions. The superconducting and mechanical properties were studied further on the YBCO-Ag system in the wide volume fractions 0 to 92%Ag. The onset of the superconductivity is found to occur even for samples containing more than 80 vol % Ag. The value of the critical current density is increased initially by adding silver. The mechanical strength against fracture is also improved. The X-ray structural analysis coupled with scanning electron micrographs revealed that silver and YBCO remain intact after sintering and that fine YBCO particles form continuous networks around homogeneously distributed silver particles. This explains well both superconducting and mechanical properties in the present YBCO-Ag composite system.

Notes: Abstract The sensitivity in the determination of deuterium and15N by nuclear reactions was examined for the following reactions: (1)15N(d,n)16O (or p+β)+γ(6.13, 7.11 MeV); (2) D(3He,α)4He (13 MeV); and (3)15N(α,n)18F. By these activations with suitable etching techniques, sub ppm regions of D and15N have proved to be measurable with their depth profiles. Some fundamental properties of hydrogen and nitrogen in silicon are under investigation using of these activable tracers.
