Notes: The ac response at frequencies to 50 MHz of two thin-film magnetic recording heads placed in mirror symmetry with respect to one another is measured as a function of relative position and applied dc fields. One driven head can be used to sense the presence of a second head even when the second head is not driven. An array of wires with current in alternating directions from wire to wire is used to obtain the absolute response of thin-film heads. The efficiency of a head is found to be about 2/3.

Notes: Electrode erosion (especially anode erosion) is still an important problem for high-power vortex stabilized arc lamps. A study of the electrode erosion mechanisms has therefore been carried out in vortex stabilized arcs operating at a maximum input power of 40 kW. It was found that three factors are important in the removal of electrode material: evaporation caused by thermal loading, ablation due to time varying stresses, and corrosion resulting from the presence of impurities in the gas. It was also found that the first two factors, and hence the erosion rates, can be affected significantly by the orientation of the electrodes and the presence of an external magnetic field.

Notes: Three allele-specific monoclonal antibodies to Pgp-1 (Ly-24) were used to biochemically characterize the cell surface structures with which they reacted and to map the gene(s) coding for these antigens. The targets of these three monoclonal antibodies (mAb) were shown to be encoded by a gene situated on chromosome 2 close to β2m [gene order (Pgp-1-β2m-a)] and no recombination between the loci detected by the three antibodies was revealed by genetic analysis. The genetic mapping of loci and tissue distribution of these antigens suggested that they might all correspond to a particular allelic form of the mouse phagocyte glycoprotein-1 (Pgp-1) antigen. Biochemical and serological analysis confirmed that this was indeed the case and revealed that all three mAbs were directed to one epitope. It is surprising that the tissue distribution defined by one mAb (Ly-24A) was different from that for the two other (Ly-24B) antibodies, despite the serological and biochemical identity of their respective targets. The possible reason for this unusual finding is discussed.

Notes: Summary Collections over four years in the habitat of submerged litter show that shrimps are abundant the year round. Mean densities vary from 5–45 animals/m2 of litter habitat. Finegrained density distribution within litter sites is highly clumped, but coarse-grained distribution in any given month between litter sites along the river is grosso-modo random. Density and species distribution are a function of the annual cycles of inundations. Of the five species (of a total of seven in the area) that were found to be breeding in the litter habitat it could be established that reproduction is restricted to the period of rising and highest water levels. Reproduction is low in all species, namely below 20 eggs per egg batch with essentially a single generation per year. Breeding ecology in relation to the litter habitat is briefly discussed.

Notes: Summary Data on long-term research on the ecology of Central Amazonian forest streams are presented and they reveal the following basic features: Firstly, the essential input of nutrients into these waters consists of forest litter and of the fungi that decompose this litter; consequently, the bulk of the fauna is concentrated in accumulations of submerged litter. Secondly, the nutrients released by the decomposition of this litter do not appear in solution in the stream water, but are tied up throughout in the food web of the aquatic fauna. Thirdly, this food web is relatively robust. This is due to the absence of food specialists in the major channels of energy transfer. One of the staple foods for invertebrate predators consists of chironomid larvae. Fourthly, the degree of acidity and/or the content of dissolved humic substances (more or less black water) has a marked effect on the density and to a lesser extent on the species diversity of the invertebrate fauna, black waters being richer in both. Fifthly, the annual inundations of the forest in the middle and lower courses of the smaller rivers lead to drastic periodic changes of animal densities, and in some cases to annual periodicity of breeding, as exemplified by a three-year study of shrimp populations in the river ‘Tarumazinho’.

Notes: Abstract The current major models of coexistence of species on the same resources are briefly summarized. It is then shown that analysis of supposedly competitive systems in terms of the physical four dimensions of phase-space is sufficient to understand the causes for coexistence and for competitive exclusion. Thus, the multiple dimensions of niche theory are reduced to factors which define the magnitudes of the phase-spatial system, in particular the boundaries of population spaces and of periods of activity. Excluding possible cooperative interaction between consumers, it appears that coexistence of species on thesame kind of limiting resource is possible only in cases of compartmentalization either in space, or in time, of resource consumption, i.e. if each consumer species disposes of a separate resource supply. Three criteria were found to be decisive for successful compartmentalization (i.e. for coexistence): 1. the vector of the resource flow; 2. relative mobility between consumers and resource units; 3. dependence or independence of resource flow on previous consumption. The traditional terminology of niche theory and of competition theory in general proved to be inadequate for analytical treatment of problems of coexistence.

Notes: Abstract A method was developed to sample the microfauna in open stream water and to observe its food habits over long periods in the laboratory. Evaluation of the material leads to the following conclusions: 1. The microfauna is primarily associated with submerged leaf litter. Its density in the open water is a function of water current and hence, of rainfall, 2. A considerable quantity of living and detritus-biomass is swept down-stream with each heavy rain, 3. The foodweb starts essentially with decomposing fungi and detritus, and to a much lesser extent with algae and bacteria. Protozoa and Rhabdocoela are an insignificant input into the foodweb of higher invertebrates, but their role for maintenance of water quality may be important. Prey of fishes and shrimps depends primarily on ‘primary input’, i.e. on detritus, fungi and to some extent on algae and bacteria. The role of biomass transport from forest streams into larger rivers is discussed in relation to the fauna of the periodically inundated forest (igapó).

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch Einsatz der Vorsäulenschalttechnik und Kopplung einer HPLC-Trennung mit einem heterogenen chemischen Reaktionsdetektor wird die automatisierte Analyse der freien Catecholamine (NA, A) in Urin möglich.
Notes: Summary The use of a precolumn switching technique coupled to a HPLC system with a heterogeneous chemical reaction detector makes possible the automated analysis of free catecholamines (NA, A), in urine. The precolumn is filled with Al2O3. The packing material of the solid phase reactor consists of PbO2, which is supported by silica gel. The precision for the whole procedure was calculated to ±10% (rel.). For rating the accuracy, a series of analyses was performed using also the homogeneous reaction detector as well as the manual batch procedure for sample clean-up. Four samples can be analyzed per hour, leading to an 80% reduction of manpower.
