Notes: A significant improvement in the maximum output power of a 1.3 μm GaInAsP/InP laser with a semi-insulating current confinement structure is reported. The improvement has been achieved by interposing an n-type InP layer between a p-InP substrate and an Fe-doped InP layer. A maximum cw output power of 180 mW and a modulation bandwidth of 8.5 GHz have been obtained.

Notes: A maximum cw power of 90 mW at 25 °C was obtained for a GaInAsP/InP laser with a semi-insulating InP current blocking layer grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy on a p-type InP substrate, a 700-μm-long cavity, and an antireflection coating on the front facet. The 3 dB bandwidth was in excess of 6 GHz with a low parasitic capacitance of 15 pF despite the long cavity. The semi-insulating layer with the resistivity of 5×107 Ω cm was formed by doping only Fe. The current blocking characteristics of the blocking layer with the same configuration as the lasers were examined under various temperatures.

Notes: Critical temperatures Tc and critical currents Ic under uniaxial tensile loading have been studied on multifilamentary Nb3Al wires fabricated by a newly developed composite diffusion process. Both Tc and Ic are monotonically decreased with applied strain, showing reversible behavior up to fracture strains of the wires at about 1.3%. These characteristics may be attributed to the composite wire structure, namely to the small difference in thermal contraction between the niobium matrix and the Nb3Al filaments, as well as to the extremely small sizes of the Nb3Al filaments.

Notes: High-field critical current densities Jc and pinning behavior are discussed for Nb-63a/oTi, Nb-61.7a/oTi-3a/oHf, and Nb-64.7a/oTi-7.2a/oTa superconducting alloys. Jc properties for 8–12 T in these alloy superconductors under superfluid helium environments can be even superior to those in Nb3Sn at 4.2 K, when they are heavily cold-worked after final heat treatments. A temperature scaling law of the flux pinning force Fp is found to hold for these alloys in the form of FP=K [Bc2(T)]nbp(1−b)q, where Bc2 is the upper critical field and b≡B/Bc2. The peak reduced field, bm, in the Fp−b curve depends upon how the alloys have been processed. The origins of n, p, and q are discussed in terms of the processing condition.

Notes: Summary Determination of Calcium in Chlor-alkali Brine by Flow Injection Analysis A few milligrams of calcium in one liter of chlor-alkali brine were determined by flow injection analysis. When the calcium content was lower, the preconcentration and separation of calcium from sodium chloride with a chelating resin column was employed. The flow injection analysis was based on the exchange reaction between calcium and zinc complex of ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)tetraacetic acid (EGTA) in the presence of 2-(3,5-dibromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-[N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl)amino]phenol(H2R): $$Ca^{2 + } + Zn(EGTA) + 2R \rightleftharpoons ZnR_2 + Ca(EGTA)$$ . Calcium (0.25–2.0 mg 1−1 in the presence of magnesium, iron(III), aluminum, copper(II), nickel, phosphate, chloride, sulfate and carbonate can be determined with a sampling rate of 40 h−1.

Notes: Summary Histamine antagonists were infused into the third ventricle of the cerebrum in rats. All the H1-, but none of the H2-antagonists tested, induced initial feeding during the early portion of the light phase when histamine level was highest. No periprandial drinking was observed. Ambulation increased during feeding. The effect on feeding was attenuated when brain histamine was normally low during the early portion of the dark phase, or was decreased by α-fluoromethylhistidine. Hypothalamic neuronal histamine may suppress food intake through H1-receptors, and diurnal fluctuations of food intake may mirror neuronal histamine levels.

Notes: Summary Histamine N-methyltransferase (S-adenosylmethionine: histamine N-methyltransferase, E.C. 2.1.1.8) was purified to homogeneity from rat kidney, and antibody was raised against it in guinea pigs. The antibody immunoprecipitated histamine N-methyltransferase. Immunofluorescent histochemical studies with anti-histamine N-methyltransferase antibody as the first antibody and goat antiguinea pig IgG conjugated with fluorescein isothiocyanate as the second, showed the presence of immunoreactive structures in the proximal tubules of rat kidney. The brain showed no immunoreaction with the antibody.

Notes: Summary A polymer-based, reversed-phase column (VA-C18), prepared by grafting octadecyl chain onto vinyl alcohol copolymer gel, was investigated for its chromatographic characteristics. n-Alkanes and n-alkyl alcohols were found to be retained only by hydrophobic interaction between the solutes and the octadecyl chain. In the case of aromatic hydrocarbons, in addition to the hydrophobic interaction, π-π interaction between the solutes and the based material was elucidated to contribute to the retention. For aromatic tertiary amines which are known to strongly interact with the residual silanol group of the silica-based reversed-phase columns to produce broadened and skewed peakes, the VA-C18 column also retained these substrates strongly by the combination of hydrophobic, π-π, and ionic interactions. In this case, however, symmetrical peaks were observed. From these results, it was determined that in the case of VA-C18, the base material was found not to produce undesirable effect although the solutes interact with the base. Further conclusion obtained was that in reversed phase liquid chromatography, chromatographic properties of base matrix is highly responsible for the overall retention.

Notes: Summary Separation mechanisms for single-stranded oligodeoxyribo-or oligoribonucleic acid fragments were explored on an Asahipak polyvinyl alcohol gel column (GS-320) by use of sequential isomers of such molecules. Substrates having different base numbers were found to be separated by size-exclusion chromatography while those having the same numbers with different base sequences were isolated by use of the reversed-phase mode. By using those dual modes, a limit for the separation of the samples was found to arise because one mode shifted the peaks of the substrates in the sense opposite to the shift resulting from the other mode and it was found that when substrates had less than nine bases, the solutes eluted separately.
