Notes: Celery yellow net w s described by Hollings (1964) s severe dise se of celery (Apium graveolens L. var. duke (Miller) DC.) that could be transmitted by grafting nd occasionally by mechanical inocul tion with leaf extracts. Pemberton & Frost (1986) observed similar symptoms in celery crops. but were unable to isolate the causal agent.During recent attempts to isolate the causal gent of celery yellow-spot, another disease previously reported by Hollings (1964) and Pemberton & Frost (1986), we found that two of our samples from crop in Cheshire contained different virus. As well as yellow spots, these two plants also had yellow-net symptoms on the older leaves, and one of the plants was stunted with some distortion of the young leaflets. The two virus isolates appeared identical from extensive testing on range of herbaceous indicator plants, so one of them, CV506, w s selected for further study

Notes: Differences between the area under the disease progress curve (A-value) and the rate of disease development (r-value), the two commonly used measures of slow-rusting resistance, are discussed with the help of theoretical models. A study on development of leaf rust (Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici) in two sets of breeding lines of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) showed that the A-value and the r-value (calculated as slope of the regression line of disease progress data) are not necessarily correlated and that the initial inoculum level can have a large effect on the A-value. These studies suggested that the A-value and the r-value measure different aspects of resistance and they should, therefore, be used with greater discrimination.

Notes: The ammonium transport system of Anabaena variabilis Kütz ATCC 29413 was studied with regard to its repression and derepression using [14C]-methylammonium as an analogue for ammonium. Whereas N2-grown cells showed an active ammonium transport system, the latter was repressed in ammonium-grown cells. Repression of the ammonium transport system by ammonium did not require ammonium assimilation or de novo protein synthesis, suggesting that ammonium itself was the repressor signal. The derepression of the ammonium transport system however, required de novo protein synthesis and glutamine synthetase activity.

Notes: Abstract A structural model of demand and supply of money for the U.S. economy is estimated by the relatively new Simultaneous Transfer Function Method. This approach is motivated by (1) a need to impose valid identifying restrictions on the model and (ii) to facilitate a systematic specification search process. The endogeneity of monetary stock is effectively dealt with at two levels. Policy-wise endogeneity is handled by defining the money supply variable as a ratio of observed and exogenous monetary stock (based on reserves supplied by the Fed). Statistical endogeneity is captured in a Simultaneous Equations System. Empirical results show that commercial banks are able to alter observed monetary stock behavior when the profitability of creating new loans (deposits) increases. This accommodation is, expectedly, fairly small and instantaneous.

Notes: Abstract With the aid of the geometrical properties of a Maxwellian surface (which is spanned by flow and field lines) certain theorems have been established. These theorems shed light on the behaviour of steady, incompressible, hydromagnetic flows admitting complex-lamellar acceleration and simple geodesic motin.

Notes: Summary The gastrocnemius muscle of the rat showed no morphological, histometric or plasma membrane changes, after sciatic nerve stimulation with a 5 mA current for 30 to 60 min, 10 mA for 30 min and 15 mA for 5 min. However, 10 mA for 60 and 200 min gave rise to mitochondrial and plasma membrane abnormalities. These changes were absent after a rest period. The results indicated the sciatic nerve stimulation at 10 mA for 60 and 200 min caused reversible changes in the rat skeletal muscle mitochondria and plasma membrane.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Kupfer(II)-, Silber(I)- und Blei(II)-Salze von N-(2,4-Dinitrophenyl)-N-nitroglycin wurden hergestellt und charakterisiert.
Notes: Abstract Copper(II), silver(I) and lead(II) salts of N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-N-nitroglycine were prepared and characterised. The thermal behaviour of the salts in air and nitrogen atmospheres was studied by means of DTA and TG techniques. The environment appeared to have no effect on the mode of decomposition. While metal oxides are formed as the end-products of decomposition of the copper and lead salts, metallic silver plus carbon was found to be final product from the silver salt. The thermal stabilities of these salts follow the sequence silver salt〉lead salt〉copper salt.
