Notes: Abstract The non-linear heating of electrons in the ionospheric plasma due to high-power radio wave propagation has been investigated through an integro-differential equation derived from Boltzmann velocity-moment equations. Various processes appropriate to the situation under study are taken into account. The numerical solution of the derived equation is presented graphically.

Notes: Abstract Seasonal incidence ofVibrio cholerae was monitored for a year in a man-made freshwater lake, an open sewage canal, and a pond composed of rainwater accumulations, located in Calcutta.V. cholerae was found in all sites. It exhibited a distinct bimodal seasonal cycle in the lake with a primary peak in August–September and a secondary peak in May–June. Correlation with environmental parameters revealed that temperature and, to a certain extent, pH were the important factors governing the densities ofV. cholerae. In the lake, sediment samples harbored high densities ofV. cholerae immediately after months when peak counts were observed in plankton, suggesting a cycle of cells between sediment and water. At the other sampling areas, no defined seasonality was observed. Instead, high counts ofV. cholerae were observed at these severely polluted sites throughout the study period, including the winter months. All the 15 water samples passed via the ligated loop of rabbits yielded pure cultures ofV. cholerae, indicating that the rabbit intestine selects outV. cholerae from a mixed flora. Uniformly high isolation rates ofV. cholerae were observed from brackish water and freshwater species of export quality prawns.V. cholerae was found to be abundant and was represented by 32 individual Louisiana State University (LSU) serovars, including two new serovars. The 01 serovar could not be isolated from any of the samples examined in this study. It was concluded thatV. cholerae non-01 is common in the freshwater environs of Calcutta.

Notes: Abstract Compact tension (CT) and Charpy “V” notch (CVN) (impact and three-point bend) specimens of 18 Ni 1800 MPa maraging steel (parent metal and weldment) were used to determine plane strain fracture toughness (K IC) and CVN impact energy (CVNIE), respectively. Using an empirical equation,K IC-CVNIE correlation is attempted which could be advantageously utilized for routine quality control of inward material to effect savings in cost and time. Investigations reveal betterK IC-CVNIE correlation for tests using the precracked CVN specimens. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations reveal good correlation between fractographic features and fracture toughness.

Notes: Abstract A 0.3 m diameter, 2 m long and 0.0015 m thick, 18 nickel 1800 MNm−2 grade maraging steel motor case was designed, fabricated and burst tested to gain experience for using the steel as booster case material in satellite launch vehicles. The bursting occurred at 15.2 MPa for which the effective hoop stress worked out to be 1754 MNm−2 almost equal to the ultimate tensile strength (1764 MNm−2) of the material in the solution treated and aged condition. The failure analysis revealed that the material failed due to normal tensile overload fracture. The burst test data was used to arrive at fracture mechanics parameters like crack size, gross section area stress and the stress for leak before bursting.

Notes: Abstract Stress intensity, K, values for 18 Ni 1800 MPa maraging steel stressed to 90% of its K IC level and exposed to water, hydraulic oil (servo 317) and water inhibited with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2% dichromate (pH about 7.5) for various durations were determined using the modified wedge opening loading (WOL) technique. Experiments revealed that there is no appreciable deterioration in K in oil and water inhibited with 1.5% and 2% dichromate even after 25 days exposure. The threshold stress intensity is reached after 15 days in 0.5% dichromate inhibited water at 40 MPa m1/2. Stress corrosion crack growth rate in water is about 40 times the rate in hydraulic oil. Crack path characteristics of the WOL-tested maraging steel specimens in different environments are briefly mentioned.

Notes: Abstract Compact tension (CT) and surface crack tension (SCT) specimens of 18 Ni 1800 MPa grade maraging steel (parent metal and welded) were studied for the cyclic crack growth rate applying in sinusoidal (SL) and block loading (BL) conditions. The BL cycle was designed to simulate the stress intensity levels experienced during proof pressure and static test of a fabricated rocket motor. The threshold stress intensity for stage II crack growth for weldment is found to be about 0.6 that for the parent metal. For a given stress intensity, the crack growth rate for weldment and parent metal are in the same range under SL or BL. Through-thickness cracks (laboratory condition) in CT specimens and part-through thickness cracks (service condition) in SCT specimens show good correlation for cyclic crack growth rate. The results are of great significance for considering the reuse of the maraging steel rocket motor case.

Notes: Abstract Surface crack tension (SCT) specimens of 18 Ni 1800 MPa grade maraging steel (parent metal and welded) were used to evaluate the residual strength in 0.015 and 0.03m wide panels. For 0.03 m wide panels which satisfy infinite plate condition up to 0.006 m surface crack length, the residual strength variation between minimum and maximum crack sizes lie within 5% of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of weldments. Also for larger crack sizes both 0.015 and 0.03 m wide panels yields comparable values for residual strength. The results have significant bearing on flaw detection by non destructive testing (NDT) method which could be used for quality and reliability check on the fabricated component. Stress intensity values for these data makes an interesting observation on failure mode.

Notes: Abstract Relatively longer liver technetium tracers such as95mTc (61 d) are useful for the development, evaluation and comparison of new technetium complexes for eventual development of99mTc radiopharmaceuticals. The feasibility of producing96Tc (4.35 d) and95mTc (61 d) was studied by the alpha bombardment of pure Nb targets (93Nb-100%).96Tc was obtained in a yield of 30 μCi/μAh using 16 MeV alphas, but it contained significant activity of95Tc (20 h) Relatively pure96Tc and95mTc was produced in yields of 18 μCi/μAh and about 1 μCi/μAh respectively with alphas of suitable energy and after allowing for suitable cooling periods after the end of bombardment (EOB).

Notes: Abstract We have studied the feasibility of producing57Co (271.3 d) via the55Mn(α, 2n)57Co reaction (55Mn−100%). The thick target yield of57Co in the 28 to 18 MeV energy region was measured as 3.87 μCi/μAh. However, the proximity and overlap of the excitation functions for (α, n), (α, 2n) and (α, 3n) reactions on55Mn are such that the production of pure57Co in high yields free of58Co (70.8 d) and56Co (78.8 d) has not been feasible. We have also studied a new method for ancillary production of57Co via the reactions58Ni(α, αp)57Co and $$^{58} Ni(\alpha ,\alpha n)^{57} Ni\xrightarrow{{36{\mathbf{ }}h}}^{57} Co$$ during the course of producing62Zn by60Ni(α, 2n)62Zn reaction. In this case the yield of57Co of reasonable purity has been up to 1 μCi/μAh.
