Notes: This article describes the outline of a time-resolved x-ray measurement system developed at the Photon Factory to study the pulsed laser annealing of silicon crystals. This system consists of a triple-crystal diffractometer, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, and two fast detector electronics using a plastic scintillation counter, and enables us to examine the time-change behavior of nearly intrinsic rocking curves under laser irradiation with a time resolution of about 50 ns. The difference in the recovery from lattice deformation between 1.06-μm laser annealing and 0.53-μm laser annealing is clarified.

Notes: Abstract Homogenization temperature and salinity were determined for fluid inclusions in mostly quartz and partly sphalerite, cassiterite, and barite from the 28 tin-polymetallic ore deposits in Bolivia. Generally, the homogenization temperatures and salinities of these fluid inclusions are comparatively high for ore deposits formed by cassiterite mineralization, such as Morococala and Avicaya in the Oruro district, frequently indicating a temperature higher than 300°C and salinity higher than 20 equiv. wt% NaCl. Particularly, it is quite possible that tin deposits associated with the W-Bi and tourmaline mineralizations such as Viloco and Caracoles have been produced by such high-temperature hypersaline fluid ranging up to 500°C and 56 equiv. wt% NaCl, similar to the porphyry copper type. This feature reveals that the hydrothermal fluid related to the Sn-W-Bi mineralization may be of magmatic origin. Homogenization temperatures for the Pb-Zn deposits with no tin minerals are low, mostly ranging 170°–300°C. At the Avicaya-Bolivar mining area in the Oruro district as well as at the Tasna and Chocaya-Animas mining areas in the Quechisla district temperature gradients consistent with the zonal distributions of ore minerals were confirmed.

Notes: Abstract To determine the bulk chemical compositions of chalcopyrite containing starlike sphalerite and sphalerite including dotlike chalcopyrite, specimens from various types of ore deposits in Japan were used for modal and electron microprobe analyses. According to the analytical results, most of the measured zinc contents in chalcopyrite containing starlike sphalerite are less than 0.8 at%, corresponding to the maximum solubility of zinc in chalcopyrite as determined experimentally at 400°C. However, specimens from the Maruyama deposit in the Tsumo mine contain 1.2–1.4 at% Zn, which are within the solubility limit of an intermediate solid solution (ISS) above 400°C. It is therefore concluded that starlike sphalerite in chalcopyrite are exsolution products derived from primary chalcopyrite solid solution and/or zincic ISS. Measured copper contents in sphalerite including dotlike chalcopyrite yield considerably higher values, i.e., 1.5–6.0 at%, which exceed the solubility limits of copper in sphalerite solid solution as determined experimentally. This result suggests that not all the chalcopyrite dots were exsolved from sphalerite, but that most of them are the product of some other mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract Recent studies on chromosomes have shown the presence of diploid and triploid types of Paragonimus westermani. To determine any possible biological differences between them, the migration route and development of the diploid type in the final hosts were compared with those of the triploid type. In the cat, the definitive host, larvae of the diploid type migrated to the abdominal wall, remained there for two weeks, and then migrated to the lung. In the rat, the abnormal host, some orally administered metacercariae of the diploid type made cysts in the lung and laid eggs, but the triploid type did not lay any eggs. Neither type of P. westermani migrated to the liver of the rat, in contrast to the previously reported fact that P. miyazakii and P. ohirai migrate to the liver and develop there. From these results, it seems likely that the two types of P. westermani are closely related.

Notes: Abstract Monoclonal antibodies were generated for the isolation of specific antigens from Trichinella spiralis. A monoclonal antibody (TS32D12) of the Igg1 class was selected according to its reactivity and specificity by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunofluorescent technique. The TS32D12 antibody was purified from ascites by fast protein liquid chromatography. The purified antibody showed a sensitive reaction to the T. spiralis antigen, but not to any other heterologous parasite antigens so far examined. Western blot analysis showed that the monoclonal antibody bound to epitopes present on the 160-kDa molecule. The antigen molecule was fragmented into 56-kDa molecules by heat treatment. The epitopes seemed to be destroyed since the antibody could not bind to the 56-kDa molecule. Staining with the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reagent suggested that the two molecules of 160 kDa and 56 kDa were glycoproteins. The 160-kDa molecule was detected only in the α-stichocyte of T. spiralis muscle larvae.

Notes: Abstract The perception of consonants which were followed by the vowel [a] was studied in chimpanzees and humans, using a reaction time task in which reaction times for discrimination of syllables were taken as an index of similarity between consonants. Consonants used were 20 natural French consonants and six natural and synthetic Japanese stop consonants. Cluster and MDSCAL analyses of reaction times for discrimination of the French consonants suggested that the manner of articulation is the major determinant of the structure of the perception of consonants by the chimpanzees. Discrimination of stop consonants suggested that the major grouping in the chimpanzees was by voicing. The place of articulation from the lips to the velum was reproduced only in the perception of the synthetic unvoiced stop consonants in the two dimensional MDSCAL space. The phoneme-boundary effect (categorical perception) for the voicing and place-of-articulation features was also examined by a chimpanzee using synthetic [ga]-[ka] and [ba]-[da] continua, respectively. The chimpanzee showed enhanced discriminability at or near the phonetic boundaries between the velar voiced and unvoiced and also between the voiced bilabial and alveolar stops. These results suggest that the basic mechanism for the identification of consonants in chimpanzees is similar to that in humans, although chimpanzees are less accurate than humans in discrimination of consonants.

Notes: Abstract The concentrations of neutron-induced radionuclides have been measured in ground level air during the period between 1976 and 1981 at Nagoya (35° N, 137° E), Japan. Six Chinese atmospheric nuclear weapons tests were conducted by the government of China at Lop Nor (40° N, 90° E) during the period 1976–1981. The Chinese nuclear tests of November 17, 1976 (the 21st test) and October 16, 1980 (the 26th test), high-yield devices, produced54Mn,55Fe and88Y whose production reactions are54Fe(n, p),56Fe(n, 2n) and89Y(n, 2n), respectively. The tests of September 26, 1976 (the 19th test), September 17, 1977 (the 22nd test) and March 15, 1978 (the 23rd test), low-yield devices, produced54Mn,57Co and58Co whose production reactions are54Fe(n, p),58Ni(n, pn) and58Ni(n, p) respectively. No neutron activation product from the 24th test (December 14, 1978) was observed.

Notes: Abstract A simple and versatile method was developed to detect low specific-activity63Ni with a liquid scintillation counter. High counting efficiency was obtained for a sample containing up to 220 mg of nickel using a mixture of a violet solution of nickel ammine complex and an emulsifier liquid scintillator. The detection limit was 0.06 Bq g−1 Ni /1.6 pCi g−1 Ni/ assuming the counting for 1000 min and 95% confidence level.
