Notes: Abstract The oviposition preference of the European Corn Borer Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. Lepidoptera pyralidae was studied in relation to phenological stages of different plant species (Zea mays L., Helianthus annuus L., Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The experiments were done in greenhouses in binary choices. The results show that the plant phenological stages were more important than the plant species in the insect oviposition preference. When the choice was given between two plant species throughout their growth, the preference varied in relation to the development of each species. The relative differences in fructose amounts found on the leaf surfaces (phylloplane) were highly correlated with the insect oviposition preference. Amounts of proline, glucose and sucrose may accentuate this previous effect.

Notes: Summary Various extremely thermophilic archaebacteria exhibit optimum growth at above 80°C.Pyrodictium is the most thermophilic of these organisms, growing at temperatures of up to 110°C and exhibiting optimum growth at about 105°C. All of these organisms grow by diverse types of anaerobic and aerobic metabolism.

Notes: Summary Necessary and sufficient condition of algebraic character is given for the invertibility of the Jacobian matrix in Bairstow's method. This leads to a sufficient condition for local quadratic convergence. Results also yield the rank of the Jacobian, when it is singular. In the second part of the paper we give several examples for two step cyclization and more complicated kind of divergence. Some of the polynomials in divergence examples are proved to be irreducible over the field of rational numbers.

Notes: Abstract Earlier experiments seemed to indicate a positive correlation between the choice of the oviposition site of Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. on maize (Zea mays L.) leaves and their carbohydrate content. In the present study a growth regulator, maleic hydrazide (M.H.), is used to increase the soluble carbohydrate content of the plants. It seems that the insect prefers to oviposit on the treated plants which display higher carbohydrate contents. On the other hand the distribution of the egg-masses on the leaf blade is also modified. Plant height has no influence on these choices.

Notes: Abstract Specimens of Bathymodiolus sp. were collected at 2 620 m depth during the “Biocyarise” Cruise (12°58′80″N; 13°56′60″W) in March 1984, and samples of the gill were fixed for ultrastructural observations. The gill of this hydrothermal-vent mytilid constitutes the main organ in the nutritional processes. The lamellae display abundant ciliation, normally comprised of frontal cilia, compound latero-frontal cirri and lateral cilia. At the ventral margin of each demi-branch, a longitudinal, ciliated, feeding groove is present. the lamellae are composed of numerous homorhabdic filaments connected by tufts of cilia. Each filament is made of a thin wall overlying a central lumen containing amoebocytes. Ultrastructural observations revealed the filament wall to be composed of four types of cells: (1) The ciliated cells of the frontal, latero-frontal and lateral ciliation, characterized by an abundance of mitochondria. (2) Mucous cells present to some degree among the ciliated cells, but more abundant on the distal edge and containing dense droplets of mucus. (3) Cells colonized at their apical pole by numerous bacteria enclosed in membrane-delimited clear spaces and composing the major part of the filament wall. (4) Thin ciliated cells separating the bacterial cells and characterised by a dense fringe of microvilli at their apical pole. The lumen of the filament contains amoebocytes of different morphological aspects which seem to accumulate electron-dense granules, possibly related to detoxification processes.

Notes: Abstract We report single grain U-Pb ion-microprobe as well as conventional bulk size fraction ages for zircons from 3 metasediment samples of the Moldanubian Complex, Bohemian Massif, one of the largest crystalline complexes of the Hercynian foldbelt in Europe. These are complemented by whole-rock Sm-Nd model ages. The metasediments are of upper amphibolite to granulite grade and come from the Bory Massif in Moravia, NW of Brno (sample AA-1) and from the Varied Group (AA-2) and Monotonous Group (AA-3) in the Ceske Budejovice region of SW Bohemia. Ion-microprobe data for detrital zircons yielded 207Pb/ 206Pb ages between ca. 1750 Ma and 2680 Ma and reflect chronologically heterogeneous source terrains. One grain in sample AA-1 of the Bory granulite massif may be as old as 2684±14 Ma, and this constitutes the oldest reported zircon age for the Hercynian belt of central Europe. The single grain data are much less discordant than previously published conventional U-Pb analyses from bulk zircon samples and suggest a significant early Proterozoic crust-formation event between 2 and 2.2 Ga ago. The size fraction data are compatible with the single grain ages and give a fairly precise definition of the Hercynian event between 347 and 367 Ma ago while their upper Concordia intercept ages between ≈1700 and ≈2050 Ma represent the mean of the respective grain populations and are probably geohronologically meaningless. The Nd whole-rock model ages between 1.7 and 3.0 Ga confirm mid-Proterozoic to Archaean source terrains for the dated metasediments.

Notes: Abstract The inactivation rate of cells induced by heat in biological systems exhibits significant variations. The Fröhlich hypothesis of coherent vibrations is used to explain the observed differences between thermal sensitivities of malignant cells and their healthy counterparts. The resistance of the cellular membrane to the thermal fluctuations, pore creation, and membrane permeability increase may depend on the coherent state energy. A higher membrane permeability results in a lower cell survival rate when heated to the hyperthermic range.

Notes: Abstract The Fröhlich kinetic equation (FKE) describes the coherent excitation in a band of polarization waves consisting of normal modes. The FKE involves the one and two quanta terms representing energy supply, energy losses and energy channeling between the modes with the help of the heat bath. The energy channeling between the vibration systems located at different positions and the channeling connected with multiple quanta processes without the help of the heat bath are analyzed. The additional terms of the FKE are derived. The multiple quanta processes may channel the energy from the coherently excited mode (or modes) to higher frequency ones.
