    Notes: The thermal degradation of a series of copolymers of vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate and the two homopolymers poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(methyl acrylate) obtained using Ce(IV) as initiator has been investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TGA) in dynamic nitrogen. The kinetic parameters E, n, and A have been obtained following several methods of thermogravimetric analyses. The stability increases as the methyl acrylate content in the copolymer composition increases. The incorporation of 5 mol % of vinyl acetate in the copolymer produces a marked decrease in stability compared to the homopolymer poly(methyl acrylate). There is evidence for an intramolecular lactonization process in vinyl acetate - methyl acrylate copolymers.

    Notes: The thermal degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) as polymerized in aqueous nitric acid solution using Ce(IV) alone and in combination with isobutyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, glucose, maltose, and cellobiose as initiator systems has been investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TGA) in dynamic nitrogen. The kinetic parameters E, n, and A have been obtained following several methods of thermogravimetric analysis. The most stable material was found to be the PMMA sample obtained with Ce(IV), and the Ce(IV)-IBA and Ce(IV)-maltose polymerized samples were the least stable. In the pyrolysis of Ce(IV)-IBA and Ce(IV)-maltose polymerized samples it was found that two reactions occurred, while in the case of the PMMA polymerized with Ce(IV), Ce(IV)-IPA, Ce(IV)-glucose, and Ce(IV)-cellobiose three reactions took place.

    Notes: Methyl methacrylate has been polymerized in aqueous nitric acid at 30°C, with the redox system ceric ammonium nitrate-isopropyl alcohol as initiator. The gravimetric method has been used to follow the reaction. After a short induction period polymerization started, and conversion attained a maximum value with extent of reaction, whereas the ceric ion is exhausted. The size, distribution, and number of PMMA particles formed were measured by scanning electron microscope. From the electron micrographs it was found that the particles are formed over a short period, and that the particle size distribution seems to be determined by flocculation and coagulation of the particles, because these are not stabilized. Average-molecular weight was found to increase at high conversions and the molecular weight distribution became broader as particle size increased. Particle size increased with conversion, whereas the number of particles remained constant.

    Notes: An instrument designed to measure thermal conductivity of consolidated rocks, dry or saturated, using a transient method is presented. The instrument measures relative values of the thermal conductivity, and it needs calibration to obtain absolute values. The device can be used as heat pulse line source and as continuous heat line source. Two parameters to determine thermal conductivity are proposed: TMAX, in heat pulse line source, and SLOPE, in continuous heat line source. Its performance is better, and the operation simpler, in heat pulse line-source mode with a measuring time of 170 s and a reproducibility better than 2.5%. The sample preparation is very simple on both modes. The performance has been tested with a set of ten rocks with thermal conductivity values between 1.4 and 5.2 W m−1 K−1 which covers the usual range for consolidated rocks.

    Notes: A jitter-free, repetitive opening switch made of YBa2Cu3O7−x high-temperature superconductor is demonstrated. The switch conducts electrical current at no loss when it is superconducting. A pulse or pulse train of magnetic field on the order of 100 G causes the transition of the switch from the superconducting state to the resistive normal state and forces current to flow through a load resistor that is connected in parallel with the switch. Repetitive operation of this switch at rep rates higher than 1 kHz has been demonstrated.

    Notes: Of 17 species of free-living amoebae identified in various samples of salt water, only 1. Acanthamoeba polyphaga, is known to be a potential pathogen.     Notes: Diarrhoea is a common event during typhoid fever; nevertheless, the possible participation of a diarrhoea-inducing enterotoxin has not been described (Roy et al., 1985). Recombinant bacteriophage λ FDC1 was isolated from a genomic library of Salmonella typhi, the causal agent of typhoid fever, by screening with a probe for the B subunit gene of the heat-labile, cholera-like, Escherichia coli enterotoxin (LT). λ FDC1 codes for an enterotoxin that causes secretion in rat ileal loops, that elongates Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, that is recognized by antibodies against LT, and does not bind in vitroto ganglioside GM1. These results should allow further studies towards elucidating a possible role for the S. typhi enterotoxin in the pathogenesis of typhoid fever.

    Notes: Partitioning of nitrogen by soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr. cv. Hodgson) grown in natural conditions was studied by successive exposures of root systems to 15N2 and periodical measurements of 15N distribution. Nitrogen derived from the atmosphere was mainly found in the aerial parts of the plants, and the stage of development exerted a strong influence on the initial 15N distribution (measured one week after incorporation). Until day 69 after sowing, leaf blades contained 47 to 57% of the fixed N. After that, reproductive structures attracted increasing proportions, 10 to 60% between days 69 and 92. Around day 82, stems and petioles stored up to 30% of the newly fixed N. During pod development and pod filling and until maturity, fixed N was remobilized from vegetative tissues and pod walls to seeds. These transfers first concerned the newly incorporated N, but at maturity 80 to 90% of the total was recovered in the seeds. The high mobility of N originating from the atmosphere as compared to that coming from the soil (vegetative tissues exported only 50% of their total N) seems to indicate that fixed N was at least partially integrated in a special pool. This was certainly the case at the later stage of N2 fixation, when a large portion of fixed N accumulated in the stems and petioles, probably in the form of storage compounds such as ureides for later transfer to the developing seeds. Further research is needed in order to investigate the nature and role of this pool in the nitrogen nutrition of soybeans.
