Notes: A complex new magnetic refrigerant, suitable for the ideal Ericsson cycle, has been investigated. Above ∼15 K it is necessary to use ferromagnets as a magnetic refrigerant. However, temperature variation for the magnetic entropy change in a homogeneous ferromagnet is not suitable for the Ericsson cycle. The present paper verifies, from theoretical analysis, that a complex ferromagnetic material, for instance, (ErAl2)0.312(HoAl2)0.198 (Ho0.5Dy0.5Al2)0.490, has the most suitable characteristics for the ideal Ericsson cycle, including two kinds of isomagnetic field processes. On the basis of the above consideration, a sintered layer structural complex has been prepared, composed of three kinds of RAl2.15 layers, where R's are rare-earth atoms. From specific heat measurements made on this complex, its entropy and entropy change have been determined. It has been concluded that the complex magnetic material is the most hopeful refrigerant for the Ericsson cycle.

Notes: Summary The colony formation of soil bacteria was studied in relation to incubation time. The process was simulated by a colony-forming curve (CFC) which was a superposition of several component curves (cCFC) given theoretically by the first-order reaction (FOR) model. This model had been previously proposed to define the colony formation of cells of a single culture. Soil bacteria were divided into several groups by these cCFC, as different types of bacteria produced their own colonies. Bacteria belonging to a single group grew at a similar rate on the plating medium and each group was characterized by a different growth rate. Most copiotrophic bacteria were fast growers and most oligotrophic bacteria slow growers.

Notes: Summary Light and electron microscopic localization of l-alpha-hydroxyacid oxidase (l-HOX) in rat kidney was studied by means of immunocytochemical · techniques. Isozymes A and B of l-HOX were purified from rat liver and kidney, respectively. The apparent molecular weights of the subunits of the isozymes A and B were 35,800 and 33,500 daltons, respectively, by a slab gel electrophoresis. Antibodies to the isozymes were raised in rabbits. Anti(isozyme A) is not cross-reactive with the isozyme B and vice versa anti(isozyme B) not with the isozyme A. Using anti-isozyme B, semithin sections of Epon-embedded material and ultrathin sections of Lowicryl K4M-embedded material were stained by immunoenzyme and protein A-gold techniques, respectively. By light microscopy, fine discrete granular staining was noted in proximal tubules, but not in distal tubules including thick and thin limbs of Henle and collecting tubules. By electron microscopy, gold particles representing the antigen sites for l-HOX B were confined exclusively to peroxisomes, in which most of the gold particles were localized in electron dense peripheral matrix, but little in central matrix with low electron density. The results indicate that l-HOX B does not homogeneously distribute in peroxisomes of rat kidney but might be associated with some substructure within peroxisome matrix.

Notes: Abstract Alpha-recoil ranges were calculated for fifteen interesting minerals, especially for naturally occurring alpha-emitters, on the basis of the simple LSS-theory. The ranges obtained from single decay process were represented as a comprehensive range expression in A units, as well as the physical ranges in μg/cm2 units. Furthermore, the total mean ranges concerning overall alpha-decaying members within each natural decay series, including the extinct neptunium series, have also been evaluated and tabulated. These calculated ranges can contribute to the interpretation of the widespread disequilibrium states in respective decay series in nature as well as in laboratory experiments.

Notes: Abstract A rapid method has been developed for the de termination of214Pb and214Bi in natural waters by alpha-spectrometric measurement of214Po. Well water was filtered on a membrane filter impregnated with manganese oxide and followed by direct alpha-spectrometric analysis. A prominent alpha peak was assigned to214Po, which should be supported by the longer lived parents214Pb and214Bi. The activity ratios between214Pb and214Bi adsorbed on the filter were determined by using the change of activity of214Po as a function of counting period after the filtration. The adsorbed yield of214Pb was also determined from the growth of the alpha-peak due to210Po from a210Pb tracer added in the original water. The results indicated that the amount of214Pb was in radioactive non-equilibrium state with the Rn-222 dissolved, while the activity ratios of214Bi/214Pb showed on increasing tendency with the storage period of the water.

Notes: Abstract The cross sections of both thermal neutron capture and the (n, 2n) reaction for231Pa target have been determined by using gamma-ray and alpha-ray spectrometric methods following irradiation with neutrons possessing purely thermalized and fission-type reactor spectrum, respectively. Prior to the irradiation, a pre-chemical purification was applied to ensure the accurate determination of the target nuclide,231Pa. For the sake of alpha-spectrometric determination of the daughter230U, decayed out from parent230Pa, the chemical purification of uranium was also applied to the alpha-source preparation from the reactor-irradiated231Pa. The activity ratio of230U to232U was converted to an initial formation ratio of230Pa to232U and followed by an evaluation of cross section. The cross section value for the231Pa (n,γ)232Pa reaction process was estimated to be 186±13 barn for purely thermal neutrons. The231Pa(n, 2n)230Pa cross section value is 4.12±0.32 mbarn for fission type neutrons.

Notes: Abstract A versatile system has been developed for the TL-reader of geological samples by using a personal computer system combined with a ceramic heater and a photon counting technique. A handy heater stack consisting of four ceramic heater plates was operated to ensure constant heating rate by applying phase-control circuit up to 400°C to a normal laboratory AC-power supply in order to obtain the TL-results as quantitatively as possible. From the results of the artificially irradiated quartz, a small amount of sample like 5 mg was verified to be applicable to obtain useful geochronological and geothermal information.
