    Notes: The possibility to induce nitrate reductase (NR; EC 1.6.6.2) in needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings was studied. The NR activity was measured by an in vivo assay. Although increased NR activities were found in the roots after application of NO3−, no such increase could be detected in the needles. Detached seedlings placed in NO3− solution showed increasing NR activities with increasing NO3− concentrations. Exposure of seedlings to NOx (70–80 ppb NO2 and 8–12ppb NO) resulted in an increase of the NR activity from 10–20 nmol NO2− (g fresh weight)−1 h−1 to about 400 nmol NO2− (g fresh weight)−1 h−1. This level was reached after 2–4 days of exposure, thereafter the NR activity decreased to about 200 nmol NO2− (g fresh weight)−1 h−1. Analyses of free amino acids showed low concentrations of arginine and glutamine in NOx-fumigated seedlings compared to corresponding controls.

    Notes: Summary Recovery from winter depression of photosynthesis was studied in Pinus sylvestris, Pinus conforta and Picea abies by means of chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange measurements. During the winter 1986–1987 the fluorescence yield was low and no variable fluorescence was detectable before the end of March. In the field recovery of variable fluorescence/maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) during spring was slow for all three species studied. The temperature dependence of recovery was confirmed from measurements of the potential rate of recovery of Fv/Fm at different temperatures in the laboratory. At 20° C, Fv/Fm increased from 0.1 to 0.8 within 3 days. Recovery of Fv/Fm was paralleled by an increase in apparent photon yield. No significant differences could be demonstrated between the studied tree species in potential rate of recovery in the laboratory or in actual recovery in the field.

    Description: Spruce (Piceaabies L.) and pine (Pinussylvestris L.) seedlings were planted at different positions relative to artificial tree shades. Two sites in northern Sweden known as difficult to regenerate owing to frosts during the growing season were used. No deficiency of soil water was recorded during the growing season and all seedlings experienced similar temperature conditions during night frosts. Exposed seedlings received on clear days 7 h more of direct solar radiation than did shaded seedlings. After the first severe night frost in August, discoloration of needles and a decrease in chlorophyll concentration as well as lowered photosynthetic rates were more pronounced for the exposed seedlings. This was more obvious for spruce than pine seedlings. The differences in radiant load seem to be of ultimate importance for the results observed. It is proposed that photoinhibition and subsequent photooxidation of planted seedlings occur in the field when severe night frosts are followed by clear days with high irradiance.
