    Notes: A new technique for increasing the laser penetration efficiency of metals has been developed. By amplitude modulating a free-running neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser pulse, the depth of the crater was increased and the threshold energy for reliable hole drilling was decreased significantly. It was observed that the effect of chopping was optimal at 8–12 kHz with a 70% duty cycle. We believe that this improvement is due to an increase in the vapor recoil pressure and reduced plasma screening. Possible acoustic resonance effects have also been considered and will be discussed.

    Notes: The resistivity of a Y-Ba-Cu-O film was monitored during laser deposition in real time. Both deposition parameters leading to in situ films and those requiring high-temperature (850 °C) post-annealing were examined. It was found that in both cases, the resistivity was dependent on the oxygen partial pressure during deposition, and that filling the chamber with oxygen immediately after deposition was crucial to the formation of the superconducting phase. Oxygen outdiffusion during deposition at high temperature (600 °C) was found to be the major obstacle to true in situ film formation.

    Notes: Superconducting strips of 0.6 μm width were fabricated by direct laser writing on mirror-like Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films on various substrates. These films were grown by laser deposition without post-annealing. Laser ablation etching had no effect on the Tc and Jc until the lines were 〈1 μm wide. The 0.6-μm-wide strip showed some degradation of Tc. The critical current densities for all patterned lines were measured to be ∼4×106 A/cm2 at 20 ° K.

    Notes: Summary A method to produce viable and stabile dry microorganisms for food and agricultural purposes was developed. Spray-dried, freeze-dried or liquid culture concentrates of lactic acid-producing bacteria were mixed with various bulking agents to form a homogeneous wet granulation having a water content of 35–60% (w/w). The wet granulation was extruded through a dye onto a spinning plate (350–500 rpm) of a spheronizing device which resulted in the formation of discrete spherical particles. After forming spheres, the aggregate cell particles, both coated and uncoated, were dried to a moisture level of 5–10% using a temperature below the microorganism's optimum growth temperature. The coated and uncoated products were stored at different temperatures and periodically sampled to determine stability. Uncoated cell particles were more stabile at 4°C than at 22°C for 76 days. While both coated (with sodium alginate or carboxymethyl-cellulose) and uncoated particles showed similar stability at 4°C, at higher storage temperatures the applied coating improved the storage stability of the culture particles.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation has been carried out on the feasibility of employing a CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramic (known as Silceram) as a matrix for a fibre composite produced by a powder route. Some important properties of the parent glass, e.g. surface energy, viscosity, have been measured as well as the kinetics and structural aspects of the sintering and crystallization processes. It was found that the crystallization of the main phase, diopside, occurred from the surface of individual particles and internally with activation energies of 392 to 452 kJ mol−1 and 258 to 323 kJ mol−1 respectively. However, the surface crystallization was only dominant when the glass powder was fine (〈38μm). The work has demonstrated that this glass-ceramic shows promise as the matrix component of a composite because (i) both sintering and crystallization may be achieved by a single stage heat treatment at relatively low temperatures of 900° C to 1000° C, because the glass powder can be compressed and sintered by viscous flow before crystallization commences, and (ii) the resulting microstructure is fine, and in the case of the hot-pressed material there is negligible porosity.

    Notes: Abstract Fracture initiation of short glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic polyester was characterized by theJ-integral measurement based on the energy release rate interpretation ofJ. The criticalJ value (J c) is shown to be a fracture characterizing parameter for the onset of the crack initiation in the injection moulded short glass fibre reinforced composite material. TheJ c value of the composite is estimated by be 6.0kJ m−2. This value is in good agreement with the linear elastic strain energy release rate (G c), since the composite exhibited a fairly linear stress-strain relationship. The estimated ratios ofJ c to the total energy absorbed per unit uncracked area are in good agreement with the analytically obtained values after the remote energy dissipation due to fibre and matrix interaction away from the crack tip has been subtracted from the total energy.
