Notes: Abstract Pesticide movement in groundwater depends partly on a Chromatographic process in which the compound partitions between the moving water and the water saturated soil. Assuming that an experimentally measured partition coefficient of the pesticide between water and soil is equivalent to the volatility coefficient in the Jaulmes and Mestres theory, then the latter should predict the concentration decrease of the pesticide along its route in the groundwater stream. The combination of the half life of a specific pesticide in a given soil with the predicted Chromatographic process leads to comprehensive equations that allow, from an initial mean concentration of a pollutant in the groundwater beneath the treated zone, calculation of well set-backs, limiting the use of pesticides near private and municipal wells, to prevent residues above a specified concentration. Equations are given to predict the transport of the pesticide by a groundwater stream when the pollution starts from a point-source or from a large area. Laboratory experiments are limited to chromatography of the pesticide with the selected soil in order to calculate the corresponding height equivalent to a theoretical plate and the value (M/K) ratio of the quantity M of soil per theoretical plate to the experimental partition coefficient K.
