Description: Effects of boundaries (vertical sides) on the Marangoni-Rayleigh problem are reviewed. Spectral crowding and a dimensional singularity when Rayleigh effects are neglected are discussed. In the unbounded case, there is a unique Ma with unique eigenfunction for fixed Ra but infinite Ra for fixed Ma. These infinite values of Ra correspond to vertical cellular modes. In the bounded case, there is infinite Ma for a fixed Ra. The stress free side wall case gives double infinite of Ra for fixed Ma and wave number. Clearly, a dimensional singularity occurs for the Marangoni problem when the side walls go to infinity and a fixed Ra is considered. There is no direct analogy regarding this singularity in the morphological instability problem. Results on the behavior of Mac, Rac with boundary conditions also show only marginal connection to the morphological stability problem.

Description: Directional solidification of the pseudobinary compound semiconductor material Pb sub 1-x Sn sub x Te by the Bridgman crystal growth process will be studied. Natural convection in the molten sample will be visualized with a novel electrochemical cell technique that employs the solid electrolyte material yttria-stabilized zirconia. Mass transfer by both diffusion and convection will be measured by detecting the motion of oxygen tracer in the liquid. Additional applications for electrochemical cells in semiconductor crystal growth are suggested. Unsteady convection in the melt will also be detected by the appearance of temperature oscillations. The purpose of this study is to experimentally characterize the overstable conditions for a Pb sub 1-x Sn sub x Te melt in the vertical Bridgman crystal growth technique and use a linear analysis to predict the onset of convection for this system.

Description: The exothermic reaction of an arbitrarily shaped solid in a well-mixed continuous flow of constant density and velocity is investigated analytically, with a focus on a zeroth-order reaction in a pellet. Comparison theorems for the basic problem and the eigenvalue problem of ignition are derived, and the domain dependence of the bifurcation point is explored using the method of Joseph (1976). Some typical analytical results are presented in tables and compared with published values obtained using numerical methods.
