    Description: The Apollo 16 regolith breccias were characterized in terms of petrography, grain-size distribution, porosity, major and trace element composition, noble gas contents, and ferromagnetic resonance properties. Significant variation was found with respect to density and porosity; the more dense breccias displayed substantial shock damage. The breccias resembled the soils in grain-size distribution and in petrological components, though many were found to be compositionally different from the Apollo 16 soils in that a mafic component was lacking. Nearly all breccias showed evidence of irradiation at the lunar surface, and analyses of disaggregated breccias indicated that this irradiation occurred before compaction. The concentration of surface irradiation parameters were far less than those of lunar soils or breccias of other Apollo missions. Observations with respect to the argon isotope ratio and Xe presence have led to the possibility that breccia-surface irradiation occurred as early as four billion years ago, and that most Apollo 16 regolith breccias were not formed from any known Apollo 16 soil.

    Description: The spectral properties (0.35-2.20 microns) of submicron powders of hematite, maghemite, magnetite, goethite, and lepidocrocite are determined. Other physicochemical data are obtained for the powders in order to determine if deviations from stoichiometry occur due to their small particle size, to determine their state of chemical and phase purity, and to determine the physical characteristics of the individual powders. The physicochemical data obtained include mean particle diameter, discrete particle shape, chemical composition, crystallographic phase, magnetic parameters, and Moessbauer parameters. The positions of the spectral features for the hematite, maghemite, and magnetite powders are independent of temperature over the interval between about +20 and -110 C. For the goethite and lepidocrocite powders, a small shift of about 0.02 micron to shorter wavelengths is observed for some of the features after cooling to about -110 C. The spectral properties of the iron oxides and oxyhydroxides are important not only for understanding the basic physics and chemistry of the compounds but also for applications such as the remote sensing of the earth and Mars.

    Description: In the near future, Air Force mission payloads will require significant increases in power. Sophisticated sensing systems such as infrared focal plane detector arrays and radar will be employed by the Air Force to fulfill its strategic objectives. These payloads will demand that the power subsystem provide up to 50 kW at the end of mission life, more than an order of magnitude greater than is currently required. Some of these payloads must be flown in low-Earth polar orbits to satisfy mission objectives, and it is likely that large (500 to 600 sq m) solar photovoltaic arrays will operate in the low-Earth polar environment. The standard 28 volt power subsystem is not weight efficient for the array power levels being considered. The impact of the solar array operating voltage on the total weight of the array and the subsystem power conditioning and distribution components is illustrated. In the interest of reducing power subsystem weight, higher array operating voltages are considered. The problems which the higher array voltage present to the array designer are discussed. In order to provide a maximum return on the tremendous investment of resources required to develop and place these assets in orbit, they must be designed to operate effectively for extended periods of time. To achieve this, the system must be able to function in the threat-induced and natural space environment.

    Description: The performance of gallium arsenide solar cells grown on Ge substrates is discussed. In some cases the substrate was thinned to reduce overall cell weight with good ruggedness. The conversion efficiency of 2 by 2 cm cells under AMO reached 17.1 percent with a cell thickness of 6 mils. The work described forms the basis for future cascade cell structures, where similar interconnecting problems between the top cell and the bottom cell must be solved. Applications of the GaAs/Ge solar cell in space and the expected payoffs are discussed.

The major steps in the sequence process are reviewed, and the elements of the Mission Sequence Software are described. The design phase and the implementation phase of the sequence process are discussed, and the Computer Command Subsystem architecture is examined in detail. The software's role in constructing the sequences and converting them into onboard programs is elucidated, and the problems unique to the Uranus encounter sequences are considered.

    Description: An algorithm for automatic analysis of stereoscopic images is applied to stereo pairs of severe local storms and hurricanes observed by two GOES satellites. The automatically derived height fields and manual analyses are compared. It is found that the automatic analysis produces a more detailed structure in less time than manual analysis, although the two methods have similar quality. In areas where the features are very small, however, it is suggested that manual analysis is superior.
