Description: Project MAUS is a part of the German material sciences program and provides autonomous payloads for the Space Shuttle. These payloads are housed in canisters which are identical with those of NASA's Get Away Special program. The main components of the hardware are: a standard system consisting of power supply, experiment control, data acquisition and the experiment modules containing experiment specific hardware. So far, three MAUS modules with experiments from the area of material sciences have been flown as GAS payloads. They deal with the effects of reduced sedimentation, convection phenomena caused by temperature gradients and the behavior of dispersed particles ahead of a solid/liquid interface.

Description: Narrowband CCD profiles of C2 and grains in several comets (including P/Halley and P/Giacobini-Zinner) were performed. Rotational light curves were made of Comet P/Arend-Rigaux (visible and infrared) yielding the size, shape, albedo, and rotation period of the nucleus. Production rates were measured as a function of heliocentric distance for OH, CN, and C2 in P/Giacobini-Zinner and for OH, NH, CN, C3, and C2 in P/Halley. Detection and measurement was made of forbidden (O I) lines near 6300 and 5577 A in P/Halley, permitting the production rate of oxygen from CO to be distinguished from that from H2O. Identification of C-12C-13 lines in cometary spectra indicating a possible enrichment of C-13 over the telluric value was made. An assessment of techniques for detecting (determining the existence of) a trans-Neptunian comet belt is included.

Description: An NP-complete problem which is not a spin-glass is exhibited. The NP-complete problem 3-satisfiability is also embedded into a continuous analog system with no hills in the energy landscape obstructing solution of the problem. There is, however, a large flat plateau. This shows how sculpting of the energy surfaces of continuous analog systems to remove hills may fail to aid solution of embedded combinatorial optimization problems.

Description: Scientific goals include a better determination of the basic physical characteristics of cometary nuclei, a more complete understanding of the complex processes in the comae, a survey of abundances and gas/dust ratios in a large number of comets, and measurement of primordial (12)C/(13)C and (14)N/(15)N ratios. The program also includes the observation of Pluto-Charon mutual eclipses to derive dimensions. Reduction and analysis of extensive narrowband photometry of Comet Halley from Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Perth Observatory, Lowell Observatory, and Mauna Kea Observatory were completed. It was shown that the 7.4-day periodicity in the activity of Comet Halley was present from late February through at least early June 1986, but there is no conclusive evidence of periodic variability in the preperihelion data. Greatly improved NH scalelengths and lifetimes were derived from the Halley data which lead to the conclusion that the abundance of NH in comets is much higher than previously believed. Simultaneous optical and thermal infrared observations were obtained of Comet P/Temple 2 using the MKO 2.2 m telescope and the NASA IRTF. Preliminary analysis of these observations shows that the comet's nucleus is highly elongated, very dark, and quite red.

Description: A refined Taylor instability model is developed to describe the surface morphology of rhyolite lava flows. The effect of the downslope flow of the lava on the structures resulting from the Taylor instability mechanism is considered. Squire's (1933) transformation is developed for this flow in order to extend the results to three-dimensional modes. This permits assessing why ridges thought to arise from the Taylor instability mechanism are preferentially oriented transverse to the direction of lava flow. Measured diapir and ridge spacings for the Little and Big Glass Mountain rhyolite flows in northern California are used in conjunction with the model in order to explore the implications of the Taylor instability for flow emplacement. The model suggests additional lava flow features that can be measured in order to test whether the Taylor instability mechanism has influenced the flows surface morphology.

Description: Plasma plumes are injected into the tail of the simulated earth's magnetosphere produced by an interaction between the simulated solar wind and a magnetic dipole. The behavior of laboratory artificial plasma plumes injected into the magnetized plasma flow is discussed in conjunction with the AMPTE artificial comet experiments (Minami et al., 1986) and other active chemical release experiments in space.

Description: The present study was conducted to determine whether oestradiol increases activity in the European ferret (Mustela furo), whether this effect is sexually dimorphic, and whether a 24-h rhythm is present in the ferret's daily activity. The activity of male and female adult, postpubertally gonadectomized ferrets was monitored while they were maintained singly on a 13:11 light-dark cycle, before and after implantation with oestradiol-17 beta. Gonadectomized male and female ferrets exhibited equal levels of activity, and neither sex exhibited a significant change in activity following oestradiol implantation. None of the ferrets exhibited a strong circadian rhythm, although weak 24-h rhythms and shorter harmonic rhythms were present. Golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), monitored in an identical manner, exhibited strong circadian rhythms. It was concluded that oestradiol administration may not cause an increase in activity in the ferret, and that this species lacks a strong circadian activity rhythm.

Description: Insights obtained from laboratory experiments concerning the reconnection of current sheets are discussed. Consideration is given to: the nonlocal characteristics of reconnection; the build-up of pinch current sheets; and impulsive flux transfer events. The application of the experimental results to present models of current sheet reconnection during solar flares is also discussed.

Description: Entries and exits of the compressional magnetic wave segments of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter data are identified as crossings of a foreshock boundary. When these crossings are plotted in an appropriate coordinate system, they form scatter diagrams representing the geometry of a composite boundary covering all solar wind conditions of the sample. When the orientation of the boundary for the average interplanetary magnetic field direction at Venus is extracted, the boundary is similar, although not identical within present uncertainties, to that found for the analogous foreshock boundary of the earth.
