    Notes: Abstract In the last decade, numerous studies of monoterpene hydrocarbons in the presence of ozone and oxides of nitrogen have been completed. Although insights about the reactivity of terpenes have been gained, and several products have been identified in the gas and aerosol phases, carbon balances have been generally poor. This paper describes a radiotracer technique which accounts for carbon-containing compounds in a smog chamber at the conclusion of a photooxidation or ozonolysis reaction. Instead of attempting to identify individual products, gas-phase compounds were separated from aerosols, and each phase was analyzed by a liquid scintillation counter. A carbon balance of 79 to 97% was obtained with 14C-α-pinene and ozone using this technique. The significance of the results are discussed in terms of the 14C-α-pinene concentrations used in this study, which were lower than concentrations used previously by one to four orders of magnitude. In spite of the lower concentrations, the gaseous and aerosol fractions observed in the present investigation are comparable to those observed by others. Possible reaction products are discussed with respect to likely mechanisms for α-pinene oxidation.

HF, 40°C–3.2; 30°C–6.6; 25°C–9.61; 20°C–14.0; 10°C–32.0; 0°C–76. HCl, 40°C–4.66×105; 30°C–1.23×106; 25°C–2.04×106; 20°C–3.37×106; 10°C–9.71×106; 0°C–2.95×107. HBr, 40°C–2.5×108; 30°C–7.5×108; 25°C–1.32×109; 20°C–2.37×109; 10°C–8.10×109; 0°C–3.0×1010. HI, 40°C–5.2×108; 30°C–1.5×109; 25°C–2.5×109; 20°C–4.5×109; 10°C–1.5×1010; 0°C–5.0×1010. Simple equilibrium models suggest that HNO3, CH3SO3H and other acids up to 10x less soluble than HCl displace it from marine seasalt aerosols. HF is displaced preferentially to HCl by dissolved acidity at all relative humidities greater than about 80%, and should be entirely depleted in aged marine aerosols.

    Notes: Abstract Condensation nucleus (CN) concentrations have been measured at Mawson (67.6°S, 62.9°E) since mid 1981. Weekly median concentrations have an annual cycle with a maximum of around 300 to 400 cm-3 in summer and a minimum of a few tens of particles per cm-3 in winter. In this respect Mawson behaves very much like an Antarctic continental location. Preliminary measurements of the size distribution of CN particles taken over a nine month period suggest a seasonal change in typical particle radius from around 0.01 μm in winter to around 0.04 μm in summer. Diurnal variation in the CN concentration is generally very weak and does not show any systematic relation to the pronounced diurnal variation in wind-speed at Mawson.
